Andy Garcia is urging fashion-conscious rebels to stop wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the image of Latino revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara because they remind Cubans of terrible times. The actor accepts that Guevara stands for rebellion and is seen as a hero to many, but he sees the revolutionary as a butcher who killed millions of his countrymen.
Argentine-born Guevara helped current Cuban leader Fidel Castro overthrow General Fulgencio Batista's government in a guerrilla revolution in the late 1950s.
Garcia, who left Cuba when he was five, says, "I'd be curious to go around and ask them how much they really know about Che. Some people wearing the T-shirt don't even know his name. They know he's some sort of revolutionary, and to wear his image is cool because you feel like a revolutionary. Someone told me the other day that they asked one of these people if they were aware of all the executions that Che was a part of in Cuba and the guy said, 'Well, I don't know if that's true, as if it had been made up to discredit him.' I wish you could say it was made up because that would mean that all those people didn't die under his thumb. That's the tragedy."

Not to be a nit picker, but Che met his end at the hands of Bolivian Rangers in a valley just north of Vallagrande, Bolivia.
At the time, I was kind of sick of the local older Cubans complaining about Castro, they can be quite vocal. Well this guy was quiet and meek, a very proud and gentlemanly type, he never wore his politics on his sleeve, in fact, he wasn't political at all, and you would be hard pressed to think he had any kind of views on Castro.
I consider what he told me something of a gift, a gift of knowledge from an old man, to a younger man who thought he already knew about things, but I did not.
I wont go into details, perhaps another time. Suffice to say, out of 9 siblings, only two escaped Cuba, 2 brothers were outright murdered, and one sister was raped and murdered, the others went missing. He was threatened with death because he had the audacity to hold a job with a local sugar plantation, as an accountant. He didn't like the Cuban government at the time, but he was not big into the "Revolucion" either, he just wanted to work and live his life. Well that wasn't enough for Castro's men. Either you were with them, or you were against them. He escaped with his life, and I ended up marrying his daughter.
As he told his story to me, his eyes filled with tears. As a very proud man, he hardly showed emotion, but this was too much for him...
I got an idea for a shirt, I'd wear it, it would have that A-holes face with a line through it, with the caption "F**K CHE".
Someone really create some imitation Che shirts using his dead face. It could say "The Only Good Che is a Dead Che"
Right. And they'll never learn the truth in school, will they?
I'm going to take a closer look (I should have done this already) at my son's books, and get a peek at what he's being taught. Then scan and publish online.
I know his friends are wearing the red star. He knows better than to ask me for a shirt like that.

I heard him on NPR today, evidently he's got a new movie coming out. Sorry I don't have the title (didn't hear the whole interview) about Cuba, its music, its revolution. He's very good on this. It was great to hear him on WNYC talking sense to NYC liberals.
This was the Leonard Lopate (sp?) show. After Garcia, Lopate had John Simon (the film/drama/music critic) on. So it was really a little Conservative fest on that show today. Which was pretty strange, but also pretty cool.
Garcia's movie sounds pretty good. I guess I'll try and get the title, etc. now and will post back with same, if I find it.
