WASHINGTON (AFP) - First Lady Laura Bush broke with husband President George W. Bush, saying she found nothing wrong with a new Spanish-language version of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

"I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview.

If it weren't for the context, I don't think it would matter to me personally. As long as it was a once in a blue moon thing.

Even if you don't speak the language, you can learn to fumble your way through the English, making a best effort. That would demonstration an aspiration to solidarity with American culture.

Singing it in Spanish in this militant "context" (even if the correct words were used) is a declaration of a new type of citizenship -- Mexican/American...not a transitory hyphenation but a dual-citizenship. It makes me sick.

Why not poll the French on how they would like to hear a German version of the French National Anthem (including some lyrics).

Marseillaise

1. STROPHE
Auf, Kinder des Vaterlands!
Der Tag des Ruhms ist da.
Gegen uns wurde der Tyrannei
blutiges Banner erhoben. (zweimal)
Hört Ihr im Land
Das Brüllen der grausamen Krieger?
Sie rücken uns auf den Leib,
Eure Söhne, Eure Frauen zu köpfen!

REFRAIN
Zu den Waffen, Bürger!
Schließt die Reihen,
Vorwärts, marschieren wir!
Das unreine Blut
tränke unserer Äcker Furchen!

Apparently nothing is sacred anymore as we merge countries...

Well they are to some people, but not to those like Kidron and his ilk.

A remix to be released in June contains several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration laws. Among them: ["It’s time to make a difference the kids, men and the women. Let’s stand for our beliefs, let’s stand for our vision. What about the children."] "These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws ... let’s not start a war with all these hard workers, they can’t help where they were born."

* * *

Kidron, a U.S. resident for 16 years, maintains the changes are fitting. After all, he notes, American immigrants borrowed the melody of the "Star Spangled Banner” from an English drinking song.

"There’s no attempt to usurp anything. The intent is to communicate," Kidron said. "I wanted to show my thanks to these people who buy my records and listen to the music we release and do the jobs I don’t want to do."

NO...she had NO NANNY.....just finished a book about her. She was raised in rather modest surroundings. Her father built houses. Her mother stayed at home. She was an only child. BTW, I have a Mexican creche.....because my MIL brought it from Mexico for me.....and I like it.

Still doesn't explain what seems to be the Bush's preferential treatment about all things hispanic.

What's insulting is that this was a calculated statement; not "off-the-cuff" at all.

I agree, this is Clintonesque.

>>

She lost mine when she started making crude and lewd jokes about Desperate Housewives, etc., and pal'ing around with the liberals at that conference (I think it was last year).

I guess I never thought about how she could be a supporter of this invasion too.<<

While her husband called Minutemen "vigilantes" she suggested that the Miers opponents were sexists.

The masks are off, the true colors are plain to see, and I don't think they really care.
