Hispanic population booms in South Florida, nation, census shows

Hispanics continue to be the country's fastest-growing minority, accounting for almost half of the national population growth between 2004 and 2005, census figures released today show.

The boom is part of profound demographic changes in the United States, where one-third of residents now identify themselves as minorities. The minority population reached 98 million in 2005, or 33 percent of the country's 296.4 million inhabitants.

LocalLinks Hispanics numbered 42.7 million, the census data show. From 2004 and 2005, their numbers grew by 3.3 percent, a spike fueled by 800,000 births and 500,000 new Hispanic immigrants. Blacks represent the second largest minority group, at 39.7 million, followed by Asians, with 14.4 million, according to the census report.

In South Florida, grass-roots leaders hope to parlay their growing numbers into votes in the November election, and they emphasize how a growing but diverse political and economic force is little understood.

While it may sound like strange, Latin culture is so predominant in my social circles, I've integrated into it while at the same time becomming a conservative in my nigh 20 years here in SoFlo.

"We keep thinking of Hispanics as a monolith, but the variety and differences among Hispanic cultures is quite tremendous," said Josie Bacallao, president of the Hollywood-based Hispanic Unity of Florida.

I'd expect this sort of statement to come from a liberal, not a Latina. She probably has to deal with this topic all of the time with those in liberal politics. I can just hear "Whiney" Wexler asking her "How can we control those people?!? They aren't responding to the usual stuff!"

Translated her statement means "We can't seem to keep them all on the Dim plantation"

And it's true, my Latino friends tend to be VERY Christian and conservative. The others who I hung out with as a single? Well, they probably wouldn't vote anyways. Those I know today are responsible America loving citizens, not border crossing, invading, criminal illegals sapping the life from our nation.

At any rate, Hispanic culture in American society is here to stay and will continue to expand. Like those before them, it's a mixed lot, but we will be richer as a nation for their contribution (and hot women.)

That is, of course, provided we get control over our borders. If not, we will simply cease to exist as a nation.

They are liberals to imply they are conservative would be to dismiss what they are saying on every hispanic website.

They are socialists, the illegal alien invaders that BREAK into and invade this country that are overcrowding schools, hospitals, and our country, that are on welfare, that are causing a water shortage in the DFW area, statistics by EXPERTS verify that they are extremely bad for this nation costing this nation BILLIONS!

DEPORT ALL Illegals Close the border, get the deficit down, they are adding billions to the deficit!

Hmmm, on one hand you praise the Hispanic culture expansion because "we will be richer as a nation". On the other hand, you say that unless we get control of our borders "we will simply cease to exist as a nation".

First you praise the change then you criticize the cause (open borders) for the change. Exactly on which side of the fence are you?

Most Latins look down on the Mexicans and especially the illegals here. The difference between Latins and Mexicans is like night and day.

My children will grow up in a very different country than the one of my youth.

I too love and enjoy the Latino people and culture.

However, I think it unhealthy demographically and politically to allow unfettered numbers of Latino's into America.

One of the things which balances and encourages fairness in America is the fact that there is parity among the cultures and races.

(In reality, the caucasian race is made up of numerous languages, cultures and people's -- and is actually more diverse as a whole than is the Latino race)

One more thing. The Spanish speaking people who immigrate to South Florida from Cuba are much more conservative and patriotic than the immigrants (mostly illegal) coming from Mexico and Central America.

Bottom line: BUILD THE WALL. SECURE THE BORDERS. STOP THE INVASION BEFORE IT's TOO LATE.

When you say 'Latins', you are refering to all NON-Mexican Hispanic nationalities (Hondurans, Ecuadoreans, Argentinians, Chileans, Guatamalans, Nicaraguans, etc.), yes ???

caipirabob said "Hispanic culture in American society is here to stay and will continue to expand." and my response was on that. The operative word here is Hispanic, not Latin or Mexican but Hispanic.

According to many of these groups, they are the residents and We are the invaders. References like Hispanics and Latinos are names We gave them.

I was making a point in general. To me it boils down to illegal vs legal. Hispanic is just a common thread of language and not much else.

The majority of newcomers are Colombians and Venezuelnas. (Can you guess why?) As for Mexicans, I hardly see them here and I was born here. The only ones I cant stand (like most of the Cubans) are the Puerto Ricans & the Nicas. Thye are pretty obnoxious. I do hear of a lot of latins starting to shift up North to places like Atlanta and Charlotte.

I hear all the time other Hispanics, PR, Cubans joke about the Mexicans...some good natured some not. My personal concern is over legal vs illegal. I'm hearing a lot lately from political refugees about how the illegals here are hurting legals trying to fit in. They blame Mexico.
