HILL DRIVE FOR '55' ( National Maximum Speed Limit )
New York Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | IAN BISHOP

Posted on 05/24/2006 3:25:12 PM PDT by george76

- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

One of my earliest memories is driving with my Grandfather in his car, one that would sound a loud buzzer when he went over 55 MPH. He hated that car (I don't think he kept it long). He would yell at the top of his lungs to SHUT UP!

When they started making all cars with the buzzer to make you put a seatbelt on my father would sit on the seatbelt to shut the thing off rather than put it on. He hated wearing seatbelts.

The scary part is that this is an all-purpose phrase for OverLord Clinton...

This is what Hillary! thinks your time is worth.

Nothing new here, they're as generous with other people's time as they are with other people's money. It's just what Democrats do.

What a pathetic moron - the economic value of travel at 75 vs. 55 far exceeds the few cents saved. Our "leaders" are sheer idiots.

Here in Texas just this week (or last) some in state government were talking of raising the limit on the West Texas Interstates (10 & 20) to 80. Works for me!!! We have plenty of oil. We need to drill for it and increase our refinery capacity.

Wow. There went any chance of flipping a Red State, Madame Cankles. Go back to channeling Eleanor Roosevelt, she wasn't as stupid as Carter.

Do you ever notice that the same people who stifle our nations ability to supply its own oil needs also insist that our nation's national defense is solely about the acquisition of oil?

Actually. That is not true at all. At least IMHO. I drove to Alexandria LA from Dallas last Saturday in a 2007 V6 4D sedan. Averaged 34 MPG at 60 MPH and 27 at 75 MPG. I drove a hybrid V6 SUV and got 29 MPG at 60 MPH and 22-23 MPG at 75.

A pretty dramatic difference if you ask me.

Yeah, but what do they know? We sit on trillions of barrels of recoverable oil and we're 'asked' to slow down.
What sense does THAT make????? Did you read the article today that said Algore (who invented the Internet) DELIBERATELY overstated his global warming speeches to get the crowd 'in the mood' or some such phrase? Unbelievable!!!

Hey, I live in the mountains. 40 MPH is pushing it on most portions of the Rim of the World Highway.

The closest I ever came to death (well, one of 'em anyhow) was riding a big old Honda with dirt ((knobby)) tires down that road back down to the San Bernardino freeway years ago....I damn near lost it and skittered off the road more than once.

(...Of course, I was in my 20's and we'd beered up before the ride back to civilization....)

Well she left herself some wiggle room with "... and the people will accept it ...". I'm going 75-80 with people passing me left and right as it is. Like I'm sure the people will accept 55. Even when the speed limit was 55 people did 65.

Frankly, all this does is lower productivity. For example I often commute to an alternate work site 150 miles away. When we had the 55 mph limit before, it was a 3 - 3 1/2 hour commute. I can now make it in 2 1/2 hours. That makes a big difference when you have only limited time to get the job done.

Wow, Hillary the pretentious national scold, has hit upon a great campaign issue. Yeah, Hillary, this is a brilliant idea, better than the monstrosity of "Hillary-care" that went over so well. Why does this bozo think she's smart??

Go ahead and drive 30 mph on Atlanta's interstates.

Good luck passing that point.
