- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

I thought of the Carter years also. Wasn't it Carter that implemented conservation plans like the 55 mph speed limit and the the paper conservation plan to "use both sides of the paper when you wipe" plan.

I also recall him telling people not put up Christmas lights to save electricity.

One point: we today move more of our goods through over the road trucks than we did 30 years ago when this stupid idea was actually enacted.

At 55 mph the movement of these goods would take longer and lengthen the inventory cycle causing costs to increase. It would also limit the number of miles per day a truck could travel between 200-250 on average. This raises the cost per mile and lowers the owner/operators profits.

I bet the Teamsters would love that!

From one Conservative in NYC to another:
With the media of today, there is no local constituency. The speed limit in NYC is 35 mph- slower in some areas.

Someone like Hillary who flies around in private jets burning thousands of tons of fuel a year, and goes nowhere without her huge caravan of gas guzzling SUVs (armed of course) is the last person to tell other people to conserve.

If she wants to save fuel, she should do what most NYers do... walk everywhere. She might lose a few and slim down those piano stool legs of hers.

I remember when Carter was voted out. Not long after Reagan took office, the whole school marched down to a park and we had a rally. We were handed signs with Mickey Mouse and his finger extended. It said, 'Hey, Iran!' LOL!

She can take it and shove it. I live in OK where we do not get in big traffic jams. I cannot feature driving 55 mph -- cannot imagine how many tickets I would manage to get.

Just one more reason why I cannot stand her. I have enough trouble driving back east of the Mississippi where the top speed limit is not 70 or 75.

Oklahoma:

Adopted the 65 mph speed limit on April 6, 1987
Went to 75mph on the turnpike, 70 mph for cars on rural interstates and other divide highways and 65 day/55 nigh on others on December 15, 1995.

BTW, every county in Oklahoma went for Pres Bush in 2004 and have voted Republican for President since LBJ barely won OK. Ms. Clinton doesn't stand a chance of winning OKLAHOMA!
