HILL DRIVE FOR '55' ( National Maximum Speed Limit )
New York Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | IAN BISHOP

Posted on 05/24/2006 3:25:12 PM PDT by george76

- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

Oh yes, this will certainly get her elected President. In Zimbabwe. Just before they eat her.

That might be the most politically-incorrect comment I've ever heard on this forum. (So why am I laughing?) Anyway, my guess is she's far too tough to eat. Maybe they'll just shrink her head until it fits over a pencil eraser.

A federal speed limit.....

Would the FBI be using radar guns on the side of the highway to enforce this? Will breaking this speed limit be a federal offense?!

What we should do is to come up with econo-ways.

Limited access coast-to-coast transportation arteries, with the individual speed limit set at the mileage / gallon of the vehicle you're driving. Minimum 50 mpg.

Driving a huge 12-mpg truck? Sorry dude, back to the regular highway for you.

On a 100 mgp small efficient speedy something or other? Welcome to the future. Have at it.

:)

Cars get better gas mileage on the highway than in the city. In the city, a lot of gas is wasted sitting at intersections and signals.

Save gas by (a) banning stopping at intersections; or (b) driving in cities.

Should work.

INSANITY! Who is advising this woman?

Mandy Grunwald for one. Her shocking mug was on the TV frequently during the Al Gore debacle. Still one of Hillary's lieutenants but working behind the curtain for obvious reasons. Oh, she's married to the Time reporter who's already put his foot in it.

Who is advising this woman?

Her power base is NYC - the most liberal part of the entire USA. Most of them think to the left of Karl Marx, and since tree hugging is essentially a socialist activity, they support it. Most of the serfs that live there don't even own cars and are too stupid to see why it bothers the rest of us.

Some nitwit in an exotic car decided that meant they could go 60-70 mph faster than the convoy of 'runamuckas' they were weaving through, and ended up suing the State when they got a ticket because the statute was (as they claimed and the court upheld) "unconstitutionally vague".

I don't think that is quite right. From Wikipedia:

On March 10, 1996, a Montana Patrolman issued a speed ticket to a driver traveling at 85 mph (140 km/h) on a lonely stretch of State Highway 200. The 50-year-old male driver was operating a 1996 Camaro with less than 10,000 miles (16,000 km) on the odometer. Although the officer gave no opinion as to what would have been a reasonable speed, the driver was convicted. The driver appealed all the way to the Montana Supreme Court. The Court reversed the conviction in case No. 97-486 on 23 December 1998; it held that a law requiring drivers to drive at a non-numerical "reasonable and proper" speed "is so vague that it violates the Due Process Clause ... of the Montana Constitution". Due to this reversal, Montana scrambled to vote in a numerical limit as it technically had no speed limit whatsoever in the meantime. In June 1999, a new Montana speed limit law went into effect. The law's practical effect was to require posted limits on all roads and disallow any speed limit higher than 75 mph (120 km/h).

The decision is posted here: http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=MT&vol=97&invol=486

If you mandate 55 again, you'll just have a nation of lawbreakers. But Hildebeast just loves the thought of ruling the masses...

I stand corrected.

I was just relating the story as I had heard it from some friends in Montana, and should have qualified it as such.

BTW, highway 200 goes through West Jordan...Winnett...and except for Circle and Sidney, it is all a lonely stretch of highway.

They do not call this part of Montana "The Big Empty" for no reason. I am about 2 miles from Highway 200 now, working on an oil drilling location.

The liberals push for a 55 mile an hour speed limit is about raising speeding ticket revenue, not about gas consumption. There are better ways to reduce fuel consumption.

Sure, this time of year. However, moving the date up one month in the spring, near the equinox, makes for a very large difference in sunrise time. IIRC (I was a pup), Nixon did it really early in the year, and it was miserable in the Northern States.
