The Meaning of 'Islamofascism'

The MEMRI Report

By STEVEN STALINSKY

May 24, 2006

Since the war on terrorism began many new Arabic and Islamic terms including "Fatwa" and "Jihad" have been introduced to Western vernacular. To the displeasure of some Islamists other terms such as "homicide bomber" and "Islamofascism" have also been introduced.

An article titled "How the Right Played the Fascism Card Against Islam" on the Web site of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is highly critical of using the term "Islamofascism":

Fascism - with the "state" being replaced by a "state religion" with death as the punishment for noncompliance:

Saudi Arabia - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death. Bibles are illegal. Churches are illegal.

Yemen - Bans proselytizing by non-Muslims and forbids conversions. The Government does not allow the building of new non-Muslim places of worship.

Kuwait - Registration and licensing of religious groups. Members of religions not sanctioned in the Koran may not build places of worship. Prohibits organized religious education for religions other than Islam.

Egypt - Islam is the official state religion and primary source of legislation. Accordingly, religious practices that conflict with Islamic law are prohibited. Muslims may face legal problems if they convert to another faith. Requires non-Muslims to obtain what is now a presidential decree to build a place of worship.

Algeria - The law prohibits public assembly for purposes of practicing a faith other than Islam. Non-Islamic proselytizing is illegal, and the Government restricts the importation of non-Islamic literature for distribution.

Jordan - Has the death penalty for any Muslim selling land to a Jew.

Sudan - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death.

Pakistan - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death. Bans proselytizing by non-Muslims. Christians regularly put in prison for charges of blasphemy.

Qatar - Islamic instruction is compulsory in public schools. The government regulates the publication, importation, and distribution of non-Islamic religious literature. The government continues to prohibit proselytizing of Muslims by non-Muslims.

Malaysia - Under Malaysian law, any convert to Christianity must apply to a shariah (Muslim law) court to legally renounce Islam. Many Christians prefer to remain silent converts rather than take their battle to the shariah courts, where apostasy or conversion out of Islam is punishable by whipping, fines, imprisonment and--in the most extreme application--death.

"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Qur'an should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth"
--Omar Ahmed, Chairman of the Board of CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations), San Ramon Valley Herald, July 1998

Qur’an 8:12 “I shall terrorize the infidels. So wound their bodies and incapacitate them because they oppose Allah and His Apostle.”

Qur’an 8:57 “If you gain mastery over them in battle, inflict such a defeat as would terrorize them, so that they would learn a lesson and be warned.”

Well, nuts. You have to pay for a subscription. :(

I don't suppose you can give us a snippet in your own words?

Not sure. The Sun is saying Islamofascism is the correct term and that CAIR is whining about it. Doesn't sound like an article a troll would post.

Gee, if they didn't use the tired old slogans of the fascists, didn't train their kids to hate and kill, and didn't ascribe to the ideas of killing westerners, perhaps they wouldn't be feeling the heat?

Welcome to FR.

Probably not. The Sun leans right. Most likely, they are defining the term and blasting CAIR. I would be surprised to find it was otherwise.

Welcome to FR. CAIR is an islamofascist organization, so of course they object to the term.

I have been covering, ( Or, as Seamole calls it...-backhoe's pseudoblog--... ) psuedo-blogging, for years, a couple of the elements in WWIV ( III being the Cold War ), in which we find ourselves engaged.

The first element?

Islam, a Religion of Peace®? ( links, blogs, quips, quotes, aggravating pictures ) is located here- click the Pic, and scroll backwards:

Does that "salute" remind you of the "followers of the broken cross?" It should...

The other, somewhat interlocking element is this one:

"Thunder on the Border," click the picture:

What is happening under the radar is that the alien lobby, certain elements of radical Islam, and some on the Left share common goals, tactics, and exploitations of our system and society.

Work backwards on my links to see all the shady left-wing and terrorist-enabling organizations backing this rubbish.

Islamofascism is really a dumb term that contradicts itself. Fascism is an atheistic, corporatist, statist, nationalistic ideology created in the West. Fascism, like communism, is a progressive ideology that aims to liberate humanity from the past. Islam is an imperialistic system that is religious and internationalist, combining the state and religion. Islam is regressive and wants to achieve utopia by going backwards and rejecting modernity.

In order for an ideology to exist, one must find people who embrace that label. You won't find on earth any self-described Islamofascist. There is no "Islamofascist Manifesto" out there.

The only people who use incorrect terms like Islamofascism are neoconservatives who are too afraid to label Islam itself as the problem. Islam is bad enough. There is no need to make up a label for something that doesn't exist. Labels matter.

"The Meaning of 'Islamofascism'"

A puzzle. Why do 'left wingers' aka Communists support fascism and 'right wingers' oppose it?

In my view, Islamo-fascists are characterized by their violent hatred of the USA, and we should kill their sorry butts wherever we can find them.

^^^By "we" I mean the USA as a country, officially.

I don't want anyone thinking I'm calling for personal action.

You are being way too literal, in the same way as those people who inappropriately decry the use of the term "anti-Semite" when applied to jew-haters of Middle Eastern descent.

Coining a word, or expanding the meaning of a word, is fair game in the English language.
