New York: Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N. was on Wednesday night accused of making ``a very, very grave mistake'' after calling the Bush administration hypocrites who were feeding a right-wing anti-U.N. frenzy in middle America.

Washington's Ambassador to the U.N. responded with undisguised fury to a speech by Mark Malloch Brown, the Deputy Secretary-General, in which he accused Washington of using the international body ``almost by stealth as a diplomatic tool'' while failing to defend it at home.

Tensions between the U.N. and (U.S. President) George Bush's White House have been simmering since the war in Iraq, but they also encompass deep splits over the International Criminal Court and the new Human Rights Council, whose formation the U.S. was one of only four states to oppose.

All that, but not oil-for-food?

Gee, it seems to me that the only thing that "feeds" anti-UN feelings in the UN are the actions (and inactions) of the UN itself.

The UN opposing the US in the global war on terror. The oil for food scandal. Darfur. Rowanda. The so called UN peacekeepers raping and pillaging. Nations with histories of the most egregious violations of human rights being on the human rights committee... Rampant anti-Americanism of the vast majority of the member nations. And massive corruption in the UN "leadership," leading all the way to Annon.

Fox & Friends had a NY real estate person on, and they were talking about how much apartments or condos would bring in should we come to our senses and kick the UN out. That's some prime real estate, on the lower east side of Manhatten. They were saying that a 2BR 2Bath condo would bring in about 3.5 million dollars, and they also talked about how much money that NY is missing out on from taxes... Hey! I've got it! Let's put the Kelo decision to use, and condemn the property, since New York could recover hundreds of millions of dollars a year in taxes!

It seems that your principal engine are ideologies. And ideologies never promoted the most permeable perceptions able to help you understand how everything who's not US functions...

As if ideology is a bad thing? I sense that your connation in the words use was meant to imply an unproven system on the basis of those principles. I assure you, my "principle engine" is like the 283 GM motor block: Long lasting with very few problems along the way. The trouble is they do not make it anymore. Why?

The most renowned experience in the use and exercise of such principles is the family unit. I would submit that if these eternal principles can hold a family together, they can hold a society together. Strong families are the keystone that holds up and even strengthens society. Though, as they have been few and far between, history records many such instances when certain societies flourished in wealth, power, and relative peace for many decades by virtue of those very principles you seem to discount as mere ideology.

Regardless, an eternal principle is absolute. And that means they will always work if they are followed and obeyed. And for that to happen, we just have to kindly convince and gently persuade the whole world that they are true and they work. Considering that America is not a "real" nation, at least in terms of have a cultural identity, and yet, being a real melting pot of cultures, why should we not lead the world in the persuasion of such principles? (I know, the Clinton and Bush administration has thrown a serious wrench in that type of leadership, causing the US to lose moral credibility in the worlds eyes, but that would be the American peoples fault)

Notwithstanding, it should not be that hard to get back on track if we have been able to convince the whole world that our present system (UN included) is a working, viable system, despite untold millions of deaths, stolen wealth, and coerced economic slavery.

On another note, if I may be presumptuous as to say that this evil system for which the world is falling could be a precursor for the type of thinking it will take to convert a world more toward idealistic thinking and the fortitude to live by those principles that constitute those ideals. I mean, whom among us does not want to live? To be free? And to be happy?

So, to that end, we should bring back the 283 engine block, you think?

Also, precisely because it is a "lowest common denominator" organization, many of its positions are filled based on national quotas and political deals. Not competency. And given that there are a great many nations completely incapable of running their internal affairs competently, we get the same level of incompetence infecting much of the U.N.. Nobody is saying we should go it alone. But the choice isn't either "the U.N." or "go it alone". A much better option is multilateral engagements that bring together countries that share our same basic values. Certainly, if there's enough of a consensus for the U.N. to act, you long ago had enough consensus for constructive multilateral action.

I was trying to convince Necro of the eternal principles that foster Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. These are the things for which we should be seeking in arriving at consensus. Anything less than these (China, North Korea, Iran, et al) would establish an "entangling [political] alliances" with virtual enemies. The last I knew, that was called treason. Notwithstanding, I believe even trade with such nations will prove to be a big mistake in time.

I applaud and even salute your highly persuasive and reasonable response Sir.

Thanks. To me, the best illustration of the U.N.'s flaws is to assume its existence in WWII. Based on the "lowest common denominator" rule that dominates the body, the U.N. would have been powerless and voiceless in the face of Nazi aggression, especially if you tweak it a bit and have a nation like Germany on the Security Counsel. But even as it is, you would have had a veto-wielding Soviet Union stamping out criticism of the dismemberment of Poland, and maybe even the genocide of jews.

``Much of the public discourse that reaches the U.S. heartland has been largely abandoned to its loudest detractors, such as Rush Limbaugh and Fox News,''

Hello Idiot Deputy: Where do you think Rush and Fox get their material from?

Depending on the U.N. while tolerating ``too much unchecked U.N.-bashing and stereotyping'' was ``simply not sustainable,''

Not exactly a champion of free speech, is he?

Washington's Ambassador to the U.N. responded with undisguised fury

Do we love John Bolton or what?

Search the Daily Telegraph website, you will find plenty of criticism of the UN going back a ways.

Most British people regard the UN now as a sad ineffectual joke that stands by as genocide occurs on a regular basis.

They regard the UN as a pathetic paper tiger..
