Study Busts Meth 'Myths,' Says Abuse Is Not an Epidemic or Even Widespread

Methamphetamine use is rare in most of the United States, not the raging epidemic described by politicians and the news media, says a study by an advocacy group.

Meth is a dangerous drug but among the least commonly used, The Sentencing Project policy analyst Ryan King wrote in a report issued Wednesday. Rates of use have been stable since 1999, and among teenagers meth use has dropped, King said.

"The portrayal of methamphetamine in the United States as an epidemic spreading across the country has been grossly overstated," King said. The Sentencing Project is a not-for-profit group that supports alternatives to prison terms for convicted drug users and other criminals.

Like in many 'sensitive' issues, rhetoric usually is much worse than reality. While they're using government-issued data, this study is done by an advocacy group.

On any given day, new arrests in my county are fully 50% meth related.

In other words they have an agenda.

So... when can us responsible citizens buy Sudafed again? Advil just doesn't do it for sinus headaches...

Until they stopped selling psudoeffedrine off the shelf it was getting pretty bad here in SE Tennessee. Before they were busting about 2-4 meth labs a week. Now, it's about one a month.

Sure is "widespread" in this part of the country. Sensitive issue? Maybe just a real danger. Meth-heads are apt to do just about anything--and often do.

Advocacy for what?

I can tell you that my North Florida county is definitely a case of rhetoric understating reality. A huge number of our arrests are for meth-related violence, ranging from shoot outs and home invasions committed by meth-heads on others of their tribe, to destroyed 20 yr old hookers who look about 75 trolling the streets and getting busted for ripping off their johns. Not to mention the fact, of course, that the girls usually turn out to have neglected or even abused filthy toddlers at home waiting for them.

Maybe this group should look for a better cause to advocate.

"Now it's about one a month."

Well, the majority of meth used in Arizona comes from illegal labs on the Mexican border. Maybe that's why you're seeing fewer busts of meth labs in your town.

It is the same where I live.

Don't get me wrong. You should have heard me when I went to counter at the local Walmart to get Claritan-D and they asked for my license. "That's right, I might be cooking meth." Threw the little card down on the counter and told my husband I will get it from a store which does not assume I am a criminal. At which point my husband told me to calm down and then I went up a notch, LOL

I hate these feel good, useless laws.

At the same time, I hate any attempt to minimize the problem meth has become. Most traffic arrests are meth related in my county. Alcohol is 2nd.

" ... illegal labs on the Mexican border."

Should read "illegal labs on the Mexican *side of* the border".

I'll tell this to the construction foreman I spoke to recently, who says that it is a huge problem among the construction workers he hires.

I assure you Meth is a huge, very huge problem in North Georgia.

Don't know where this group came from but they need to interview the Georgia Sheriff's Association.

Here in southern Michigan we've got the epidemic. Seriously. We get at least one meth lab bust a month, and sometimes one a week.

Our social services people are struggling to keep up.

Before you slip into unconsciousness
Id like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
Well meet again, well meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
Youd rather cry, Id rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, Ill drop a line
