Yep, and that is about as deep as I want to get into it. Tritium does basically the same thing. The goal is to get the most yield out of the smallest amount of nuclear material.

Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists have developed a tantalum carbide-graphite composite material that is one of the hardest materials ever synthesized. Perhaps it was a materials application...
Tantalum is occasionally use is very temperature environments
Light bulbs used to use tantalum filaments before tungsten became
generally used

Why do the Iraqi needs it? As I said this was absoltely prohibited for the Iraqis to have according to the UN document. Please see page 133 and 84 of this
http://www.un.org/Depts/unmovic/documents/S-2002-515.pdf an * next to an item means it is prohibited. According to the document this material are used to resist the highly corrosive UF6.

Do you have a ping list? I'd like to be on it if you do.

Don't know why they would need a P-Be neutron generator
They are usually used in neutron research as a pulse mode
neutron generator with selectable output neutron energies
They have been studied as a radiotherapy neutron source in cancer research,
materials research in studying N,P reactions and
neutron adsorption activation studies in
concrete and other structural materials..
Tantalum is generally resistant to neutron activation degradation
in usually encountered neutron fields, I think

Freeper eyespysomething is the main organizer of the Iraq documents and its ping list, she will be glad to put you on the list.

ever hear of the radioactive boy scout?

Tantalum has been studied as an alternate target for
proton beam breeding of neutrons

Thanks for the information. I think it is worth that someone in the specialized government agencies investigate this. I believe that the Iraq Survey Group (ISG) had ended their mission much earlier than they should and made premature conclusion that Iraq had no WMD or programs related to WMD.

Doesn't a P-BE neutron generator require a proton beam source in the 20 mev + range to generate a neutron flux? No. Polonium-210 emits alpha particles during its radioactive decay, which interact with the Beryllium to produce neutrons. The neutrons can be used for several different purposes, not just in nuclear weapons.
If this was a Po-Be source and it was over ten years old, it would be virtually useless. Polonium-210 has a half-life of 140 days, and after five half-lives, any source of radioactivity is basically inert (it doesn't make sense that this would be a "P-Be" source, since "P" is the designation for Phosphorus).

You are right it should be Po-Be not P-Be. The document is slightly illegible, and hence P is indeed Po.

Did you catch Tony Snow with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday? Chris asked Tony if the reports Chris has been getting about WMD's in Iraq's records is becoming relevant, or not. Tony just slid right over it and didn't lend any credence to it in any way, shape or form.
Now obviously, If Tony DID know something, he may not have wanted to discuss it for some strategic reason, I suppose.
