ABC Serves Up Bias Against Starbucks
Business & Media Institute ^ | June 19, 2006 | Rachel Waters

Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) has become a convenient morning stop on many hectic commutes. Recent studies have even pointed to coffee’s potential in helping to prevent cirrhosis of the liver. But on ABC, the coffee maker was criticized during a “consumer alert” that treated cups of coffee like a “dose” of a hard drug.

The June 19 edition of “Good Morning America” presented Starbucks as akin to a narcotics dealer preying on addicts. Correspondent Elizabeth Leamy explained “many customers love their regular dose.” The camera then cut to a shot of an apparent Starbucks consumer who referred to her relationship with the restaurant as “habitual.” And the language only got stronger when Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) Executive Director Michael Jacobson called trans fats in Starbucks doughnuts “killer substances.”

CSPI was the main ingredient to the network attack, but GMA fill-in anchor Kate Snow called them simply a “consumer group” and ignored the organization’s anti-food industry history. This was the second time in a few days CSPI has received attention for assaults against fast food companies. Last week, CSPI lashed out against KFC.

Leamy said CSPI is attempting to “shame” restaurants into placing nutrition information directly onto the products or on the menu. Starbucks and KFC already prominently display nutrition information on their Web sites and provide in-store pamphlets. Both companies have also been targeted for their use of trans fats.

Remember, the Joos own Starbucks. Early in the WOT some Muslim organization organized a boycott for that reason.

Center for Science in the Public Interest
The name is one of the most oxymoronic ever. Their science and there is no such think as the "public interest".

If there were such a thing, it wouldn't include, as PJ O'Rourke once observed, the federal regulation of bedtime that this bunch would no doubt advocate.

Drop the "oxy" and you get an apt description of their views.

coffee’s potential in helping to prevent cirrhosis of the liver.

Great health news recently.

Now coffee is good for you and then it came out that in beer has an ingredient that prevented prostate cancer.

Then even better news, one has to drink 17 beers daily to receive the benefits.

What next, smoking has health benefits?

While this is clearly fear mongering by ABC... Caffeine is without a doubt one of the most addictive substances known, just because its legal doesn't mean it isn't addictive.

I think you mean that one has to drink as little as 17 beers per day.

But Starbucks has always been a known left-wing company.

If the media are targeting them, I assume there must be something going on that we don't know about yet.

Liberals turning on one of their own. What's behind the scenes to motivate this group to attack Starbucks? Surely a few steak chains would rank higher on the list of these food-nazi's?

. . .supposed to help protect against alzheimers (maybe that is why AZH is on the rise - fewer smokers?

That said; the latest is. . .large amounts of green tea consumed; help reduce the negatives of smoking. . .so; if you smoke. ..go 'green' with your beverage of choice.

Caffeine is without a doubt one of the most addictive substances known, just because its legal doesn't mean it isn't addictive. Bull.

I drink a lot of coffee, but I have no trouble skipping it for weeks when I get tired of it.

People who get headaches when they quit drinking coffee are probably just suffering from dehydration because they don't replace the coffee they usually drink with some other fluid.

June 16, 2006 Reuters article stated that Starbucks employees have complained of weight gain after receiving such job perks as free pastries and unlimited beverages.

OMG!!! Who knew that such a thing could happen??? Where would we be without CSPI and the MSM coming up with such stunning information?

I gave up watching the MSM years ago because I didn't care to be talked down to by idiots. If by some chance I did decide to watch it, I'd make sure I wore hip boots and kept a shovel next to the remote.

Anyone with any doubts should stand between me and my coffee maker at 5:00 am.

Sorry, but you might want to talk to some phramacists and doctors and others on this one. There is a reason Caffeine is added to nearly every soft drink out there, and it has nothing to do with taste.

It is very highly addictive, just because you believe you are not addictive to it doesn't mean that its not an addictive substance.
