So, if such weapons are no longer a concern after a few years - then why did the DOD build a multi-bajilliion dollar incenerator to destroy our chemical weapons stockpile at the Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas? And why is there an extensive early-warning system inplace in the community around the arsenal - and a major evacuation plan in place for a good part of the State that is related to the same-said stockpile? (CSEP) One of the primary chemical weapons supposedly stored is a modern Mustard Gas, in addition to VX.

Why, if they're no biggie, bother gathering them up?

Personally, I could care less whether they gather them up or not. At worse they're an environmental hazard to local Iraqis and I hardly see much reason why we should be paying to clean up the Iraqi environment. Let them do it on their own dime if they want. For that matter, if they do drop dead from chemical munitions litter that'd probably do far more to help our national security than gathering scrap would.. JMO

The Lib/Democtratice/DBM response is typical:

1. Degraded weapons (its no big deal)
2. Weapons are pre-1991 (old news, nothing new here, move along)
3. Crazy Santorum announced it (attack the messenger)
4. Timing (Its an election year, the timing is suspicous)

I'd wish they'd get a new playbook. All of this was predictable.

Hey, Battman, you're preaching to the choir. And, by the way, all of our demil facilities are like that. We also guard them with great measures, even though they're "degraded." I guess to hear some people tell it we should just give these to the terrorists to make road side bombs out of them. Not I.

I posted this yesterday in a different thread on the same topic...

I wonder what the repercussions of our acknowledgment of being in control of a large stockpile of WMD would be in terms of the problems involved with their disposal. If you read the article by Ion Mihai Pacepa, a Romanian, who is the highest-ranking intelligence officer ever to have defected from the former Soviet bloc, here...

http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20030820-081256-6822r.htm

In the article, he states "All chemical weapons were to be immediately burned or buried deep at sea... Chemical weapons, especially those produced in Third World countries, which lack sophisticated production facilities, often do not retain lethal properties after a few months on the shelf and are routinely dumped anyway.

All well and good for the Soviets or their clients, but...

Our forces would certainly have custody of the inventory and would therefore be expected to handle its disposal. Do you really think we would get a pass on dumping at sea or old fashioned burning?. I think not. If memory serves. at the end of the first Gulf War, we blew a huge stockpile of chemical munitions in place and exposure to the low level residuals from the combustion products were being blamed for Gulf War Syndrome.

Before you know it, we'll be expected to build one of those billion dollar incinerators like we use to destroy our domestic stocks of chemical weapons. We'll have to pass EPA inspections and file environmental impact studies, then deal with N.I.M.B.Y lawsuits and in a few years the neighbors will be suing us and not Sadam over cancer clusters. Also, won't that facility be an uber terrorist magnet, not to mention the convoys hauling stuff from stockpiles from all over the country?.

Maybe thats one of the reasons we want to leave 'em where they are. Just a thought.

Yes, 500 of them is not enough. Besides, they're duds ~

Put one in the House chamber, and watch the reaction...

I think there is a chance all these munitions can be trace back to Russia, France and China - all countries we need onboard against Iran.

Is it possible the White House/State Dept. have not said a word on this because they do not want to embarass them? I don't know, but a guy on Fox mad a pretty good argument last night.

Freeper jveritas has found the following:

The Sulfur Mustard contained in artillery shells that had been stored for over 12 years, had been found by UNMOVIC to be still of high purity. It is possible that viable filled artillery shells and aerial bombs still remain in Iraq.

The above form the United Nations inspectors and the darling of the Left Hans Blix totally destroy the stupid lies that the Left and their media has been spewing since the breakings new of yesterday. First the UN clearly state in March 2003 that the Mustard gas shells they found are of HIGH QUALITY even it had been STORED FOR OVER 12 YEARS. Second the UN admit that there may still VIABLE i.e. EFFECTIVE Mustrad filled artillery shell hidden in Iraq, and yesterday we learned for a fact that there were indeed 500 Mustard gas artillery shells that were found in Iraq since the removal of Saddam. Also it is safe to conclude that the Mustard Gas shells found after the war are still in high quality and highly effective Chemical weapons.

Exactly, we have the same program here in Oregon at the Umatilla depot, every once in a while they get a false (hopefully) reading and the eco-freaks go nuts. We can't burn the stuff fast enough, or safe enough, or blah, blah, blah, for these twerps, but high numbers of reportedly, high purity, VX, Sarin, Mustard or whatever being found in iraq is nothing to worry about.

Someone here even suggested that the they would rather see the terrorist bastards using this stuff instead of the ieds they have been using, what a stupid comment that was.

I'd like to see us pulling our stuff out of storage and just start shelling the hell out of the stink holes over there that are still giving us problems. Let some of the worse of the worse choke and puke to death, put that video on al-jerzero and watch the scum run for the borders!

Sorry just kind of went off there thinking about our Oregon soldier who was killed the other day.....

I thought your post was interesting; that the WMD find "didn't really matter".

Most of us disagree. Since the president has been accused of lying for several years now, this is an interesting find.

And since the left is trying to say the WMD were degraded to the point they don't represent a threat, I thought it was interesting as well to point out that UNSCOM has previously said that WMD left in canisters are still a danger, even after 12 years.

You sound a little touchy. Is there a problem?

The original question was "Why isn't this headline everywhere?"

I speculated that the answer might be that this "news" really didn't matter.

To those who identify themselves with the left, this is certainly unimportant.

For the majority of the rest of society, who are more interested in American Idol or Hockey, announcements of this nature also carry little or no signifigence.

So therefore, to most making these periodic discoveries really don't matter.

That was my point.

No problem, thanks for asking.

My Dad was stationed at one of the nations Arsenals'
in the 60's 70's. A friend of mine (small world) has the contract to destroy the old stuff stored at that location and it is a bear of a job because it IS every bit as lethal as it was way back in the 70's.

Oh, let's see. They were old, they were empty, if they were full, they were harmless, they were the WRONG kind of WMD's, they were only looking for nukes, we planted them.

Have I left anything out?

Ok, then, we'll just let the ones who think they are nothing handle and take care of the canisters. How's that?
