China executes 27 on anti-drug day

BEIJING - China has executed at least 27 people for drug trafficking and sentenced up to 12 others to death for the same offence to mark international anti-drug day on June 26, state press reported.

In southern Kunming city on Monday, 10 convicted drug traffickers were paraded in front of the public before being sent to execution grounds where their death sentences were carried out, the Yunnan Daily reported.

"As Kunming is very close to the golden triangle, our city has become the battleground in our nation's war against drugs," the paper quoted Vice Mayor Tian Yunxiang as saying at the rally.

"The people of our city should actively participate in the war against drugs and help the police catch suspected drug traffickers."

The golden triangle is one of the world's most productive poppy growing regions bordering Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, all countries that neighbour China's Yunnan province.

Also on Monday, four other drug traffickers were put to death in Yunnan's Xishuangbanna near the border with Laos, while three were executed in Chongqing municipality north of Yunnan, local press reports said.

Five drug traffickers were also executed in Hangzhou city, capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province, Shanghai's Oriental Morning Post reported.

On Monday, Xinhua news agency reported four traffickers were executed in eastern Jiangsu province, while one drug trafficker was executed in southern Guangdong province on June 23.

Meanwhile courts throughout China sentenced at least 12 people to death at trials that were also held on Monday, with three of the convicted given two year reprieves on their execution, local press reports said.

The United Nation's has named June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in an effort to bring more awareness to the dangers of illegal drugs.

Last week Beijing announced illicit drug use was on the rise in China, with international cartels flooding the nation with heroin as well as new synthetic drugs.

In 2005 police investigated 1,500 drug trafficking gangs, destroyed 34 drug laboratories and seized 6.9 tons of heroin, 5.5 tons of methamphetamine, 2.3 tons of opium and 2.34 million tablets of ecstasy, the government said.

China executes more convicted criminals every year than the rest of the world combined, with Chinese legal scholars estimating that at least 10,000 people are put to death annually. The actual number remains a state secret.

If absolute certainty of execution will not stop drug abuse, why would you agree with them?..........

I think it is no surprise that drug trafficing in China is small to nil. Take that to the bank.

Starting with the folks at Phillip Morris, Anheuser-Busch, and Folger's?

those are legal substances. get with the program.

get behind legalizing your own particular poison or remain a lawbreaker.

Half a million in prison after they are put on withdrawer programs that waist millions of tax money. They are coddled no doubt.

You probably meant "withdrawal" programs that "waste" tax money.

And I agree that they are a waste of taxpayer money. So are extended prison terms.

We could execute all drug users, but executing the 20 million people or more that use illegal drugs each year is going to involve some major cleanup costs.

Of course, just letting adult citizens decide for themselves what they should put into their own bodies is too radical to consider.

"This coming from somebody who wrote that he opposes the death penalty.
"

I was being satirical. Since you remember that I oppose the death penalty, then it should be easy to see the satirical tone there.

And for those who want to start an argument about my opposition to the death penalty, don't bother. I'm not going to get into that today. I'll just say that I do not grant to the state the right to decide whether someone lives or dies in that way. One mistake is too many.

The original poster made no distinction between legal & illegal drugs. Why, I would even bet they drink alcohol.

How ironic.

You are very incorrect. You also presume that because there is no perfect solution there aren't any good solutions.

Your reasoning also breaks down badly when you apply it to other things, like securing the border or preventing almost any other kind of crime.

By greatly increasing the street price of drugs, the 'war on drugs' has success.

It has made drug users and traffickers alike more violent and desperate for money in order to obtain money for drugs and get money from the drug users...........

I'm sure he doesn't; the point is that the policy you favor results in more crime.

Even totalitarian China is losing the war on drugs ... it has no chance in a free society.

No as far as chances to clean up his act.
You know did it once. Stops selling drugs and becomes a memeber of society.
never does it again.
Or, is it one strike your're out?

Unless you consider humans turning themselves into irrational animals a crime.

Do not pretend that it is merely the restrictions that are causing the crime - other banned substances do not cause nearly the crime level. The crime is driven by the effect of the substance.

In other words...don't get caught. One time and bang your probably gonna get cracked by a military rifle bullet in the back of the head.

They do not hold the same ideas on reform as we do. Prison here is for reform. Prison there is for punishment.

Most of their reform is done through hard labor etc. There are major abuses there.

Some people are sentenced to prison though for drug charges. Its not etched in stone that one will be shot on the spot in China for selling drugs. One is gambling with their life for doing that though.

Either case though you don't want to wind up in a Chinese prison either way. In some ways you might opt for the execution if given the choice.

There are courts in China believe it or not, despite what some may hear.

Those courts can and often are corruptible though. Most are not very lenient on drugs, but you never know.

If I did I'd have to support reinstating Prohibition. I don't ... do you?

Do not pretend that it is merely the restrictions that are causing the crime - other banned substances do not cause nearly the crime level.

Other banned substances are not as greatly desired. It remains the case that by raising the price you increase users' motivation to commit crime.
