Ultra-Orthodox Jews attack Christian tourists in Jerusalem
Haaretz ^ | Jonathan Lis

Posted on 06/28/2006 2:06:59 PM PDT by Michael81Dus

A group of 50 pro-Israel Christian tourists came under attack Wednesday from some 100 residents of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea She'arim in Jerusalem. Three of the tourists and a police officer were wounded in the attack. They received treatment at the scene. The tourists arrived at Mea She'arim wearing orange T-shirts with the words "Love your neighbor as yourself" printed across them. As they neared one of the squares, the local residents apparently identified them as Christians and began to hit them. Police forces in the area stepped in to stop the violence, but did not make any arrests. Police say they are waiting for the tourists to file official complaints.

I've made that mistake before. Well, Chicago, not Detroit. It still got ugly. ;)

"Additionally, why do they feel a need to go proselytize in Mea She'arim? Downtown Gaza too dangerous?"

Ouch!

[were you criticizing APRPEH for bigoted posts?]

No, I don't have any problem with APRPEH. I think the group who attacked a group of Christian are bigots. If they are so fanatically devote to their sect that beating up people is justified... then they are bigots.

I'm sorry I had to laugh when I read that. I'm Jewish. Sitting in a restaurant one day with my kids (Red Robin in Hurst, Texas), a woman came up to me and asked me how I felt about condemning my children to hell.

Yes I was wearing a Star of David. Yes I was eating and minding my own business. No I did nothing to attract her attention OTHER than be wearing a necklace.

Anyway -- she blabbered for about 10 minutes about how I and my children (as well as my husband since apparently he's not a good enough Christian since I'm not converted) are all going to hell.

*sigh*

I might be ignorant, but I'm not a antisemitic.

Just a hirabahist.

That's the problem with living under a rock.

Everyone else knows Israel had nothing to do with what happened on that beach.

Now crawl back home.

Why do you call me names? What is a hirabahist? Does it mean I'm a protector of Muslims or against an illegal war? Those were the only two thing I could find... Sorry if your insults didn't have there intend effect.

"Apparently arrests are waiting on complaints, which I hope are filed."

Probably not. Reading through this thread you can get a pretty good idea of what happened. If any of these "Christian" tourists file a complaint, I would seriously doubt their credibility.

A New Testament Christian is promised persecution. They are also directed to rejoice at that persecution. These themes are repeated myriad times through the New Testament. The verses are too many to post here. Any Christian at Free Republic knows what I am talking about.

These people walked into the Orthodox neighborhood of Mea She'arim with evangelism on their mind, disregarding the cultural norms (posted even!) of the neighborhood. They were asked to stop. They didn't. They got thumped. Oh well. Drive on. All part of it.

If any of these tourists file complaints—regardless if anybody thinks the Mea She'arim community was wrong—I would certainly doubt the caliber of their Christianity (and I'm being restrained).

As far as this incident annoying the wider community of Jews, that is something for the Jewish community to address, as many of the Jews at FR have done.

Like Bella Bru said, why aren't these people preaching in downtown Gaza?

Oh yes, I forgot. Anyone who questions civilian deaths lives under a rock. Only the enlighten ones like yourself ignore sloppy bombings.

You do realise that secular Jews are the ones who are most commonly attacked, right?

They have set up a pseudo-shtetl, with a noticeable Eruv and boundary. If you enter, you had better be modestly dressed.

When even the UN is content that Israel had nothing to do with the beach bombing, it's time for those living under rocks to question whether such an existence rots their brain.

If they can get into fights with outsider Jews and assorted Gentiles, why can't they join the army? I guess they just want to protect their own little piece of turf, and not necessarily the whole country.

Yes, I have been told, and that is just as bad if not worse.

I'm looking at this issue as if it happened in America. Attacking a group of tourist because they're Christians is a hate crime in America. Beating people up because they don't follow your religious dress code is WRONG!

Anyone who questions civilian deaths

You seem to be the only one who did not question the original (and subsequently proven bogus) story about the civilian deaths.

Enjoy the shade under your rock.

Fundamentalist Protestants believe everyone is born damned because of the sin of Adam (which kind of makes guilt impossible when you think about it). Anyway, when they try to conver the "unsaved" (including their own children, since they don't baptize them) they are merely being true to their religion. Yes, it's a different kind of religion than what most folks are used to (including Catholic and Orthodox chr*stians who stopped converting other people 1700 years ago and who go apoplectic at the thought of Protestant missionaries).

I am not a Fundamentalist Protestant, but I don't understand their role as universal scapegoat of all religion and magnetic pole of attraction for everyone's attacks. The Amish won't drive cars or use zippers. Seventh Day Adventists are vegetarians. Eastern Orthodox believe G-d sends "heavenly fire" down in the Church of the holy sepulchre each year on the eve of Orthodox e*ster. Shakers live communally and won't marry or procreate. It's a big world. There are lots of religions. Some of them are actually so bizarre as to believe in objective and exclusive truth. Therefore these religions try to convert people. They think they have to convert everyone, without exception. How can one condemn this without violating the same rule of non-judgmentalness towards all which the proselytizers themselves are supposedly violating?

Once again, there are Calvinists who believe G-d chooses who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell and no one can do anything about it. I don't know if this infuriates people or not, but they certainly aren't going to try to convert anyone.

Not if the Christian tourists are visiting the Castro district of San Francisco.

Given your name, shouldn't you be a supporter of small communities policing themselves?

Obviously, I don't support beating people up. Then again, if I were to try to walk around nude, I'm sure that there woulkd be unpleasent reprocussions here in liberal NYC.
