Utah race stirs calls for a deal on immigration

Utah race stirs calls for a deal on immigration After Bush ally scores a victory in GOP primary, one lawmaker pushes comprehensive bill

By GEBE MARTINEZ

WASHINGTON - With President Bush's immigration policy surviving fierce criticism in a Utah congressional race, lawmakers on both sides of the debate turned their attention Wednesday to finding a compromise on immigration legislation.

Those who oppose Bush's call for immigration reform — which includes a guest worker program and legalization opportunities for millions of illegal immigrants along with tougher border security — saw five-term Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, survive a tough primary challenge after allying with Bush on the issue.

Cannon defeated businessman John Jacob 56 percent to 44 percent on Tuesday after Jacob, an opponent of Bush's immigration plan, tried to make the race a referendum on the issue. Most House Republicans want a bill that calls only for tougher enforcement of immigration laws.

Cannon's victory was celebrated by Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., who discussed with Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday his plan to tighten borders first and then leave room for consideration for other immigration programs.

He proposes that after two years, illegal immigrants would have to go home briefly to have their backgrounds and job status checked before being allowed re-entry to the United States. The Senate bill does not require most of the 12 million illegal immigrants to go home.

Pence said Cannon's victory indicates that "those of us who are calling for tough border security measures in some kind of a comprehensive bill can know that we're standing on a sure foundation of support among Republican voters."

White House spokesman Tony Snow, noting Cannon's win, said Americans want comprehensive reform. "The president remains determined to get all of the pieces addressed at once in legislation, and not to do it piecemeal, but to have comprehensive reform," he said.

But Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who formed a group that targeted Cannon for defeat, said the primary nonetheless showed that immigration is a tough election-year issue. "If it takes the president's participation in a safe Republican district to get elected, he's got a lot of work cut out for him," Tancredo said.

House Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio declined to say whether House Republicans would compromise their "enforcement only" stance for "enforcement first."

And House leaders said Cannon's win adds no momentum in the House to Bush's immigration policy. "The vast majority of our conference believes that strengthening our border, securing it and enforcing our laws are critical steps in the process of cleaning up the problem that we have," Boehner said.

Ask the 15 or so families who had loved ones tortured and murdered by Angel Resendiz how they feel about it

BTW, why are you silent about the opinions of the families of the victims of ted bundy and jeffrey dahmer.

Oops, I forgot their surnames are not Spanish, nevermind.

So that's your trigger is it Dane? This is a big race thing for you.

Makes one wonder if you or your husband aren't hispanic and have some sort of vested personal interest in the immigration debate.

You see for the vast majority of us this is about following the rule of law, forcing others to respect our borders, protecting wages and our economy, and not allowing illegals who are willing to live stacked on top of one another in crowded homes or apartments to degrade our standard of living to third world levels.

But for you this is all about race.

I think you have a personal interest in this debate Dane and interest that doesn't neccessarily coincide with what's best for this country but what's best for you.

Your anger and frustration with respect to this topic makes all the more sense now.

You don't care about what's best for the nation, this is about what's best for you.

On the contrary Dane, you are the one who always rushes to make it a race issue.

It's never been a race issue for me or for the vast majority of the rest that oppose illegal immigration. I want illegals gone regardless of where they're from but for you it's all about the Spanish surnames.

This has been very enlightening. Thanks.

Please look at reply #18, by American Spirit.

Ask the 15 or so families who had loved ones tortured and murdered by Angel Resendiz how they feel about it

All I did was ask was where was American Spirit's concern for the families of victims of ted bundy and jeffrey dahmer.

IMO, it seems American Spirit did not have concern for them and decided to make an evil killer's ethnic surname the basis of evil, instead of the evil itself.

Typical tancredo/bay buchanan tactic, IMO.

It is my understanding that Cannon had a war chest 1.5 to 2 times what Jacob had. Since Cannon had considerably more money and was a five term incumbent, it is surprising that the race was as close as it was.

We know how you feel about Tancredo, despite his excellent voting record, in my opinion, as rated by ACU and other organizations. Are there any Democrats in Congress whose voting records you consider worse than Tom's? If so, name a few. If there are none, no reply needed.

This was your motivation to wanting Cannon to win all along wasn't it Dane, not his 97% ACU rating? No need to answer, we already knew.

Here's a news flash: Bilbray won opposing the Senate scheme so that makes it even doesn't it? That is unless you don't count the recent pro-border wins in Nebraska and Virginia, then we're ahead.

Please don't use rational arguments with Dane. It just confuses him/her.

This is not the first time you have played the race card Dane, nor do I think it will be the last.

This is, however, the first time that the dots finally connected for me.

Your vitriolic responses and your vehement opposition to any plan that doesn't allow illegals to stay in some way shape or form finally makes sense.

This is personal for you. Not morally personal or financially personal as it is for some. No, you will be emotionally harmed if they are not allowed to stay.

Someone close to you is at risk of being sent back and based on your specific fixation on Spanish surnames (it's always about Mexico or South America for you, never about asians or indians) I would have to assume they are hispanic.

Our country is being overrun by a culture of losers, and it doesn't take much imagination to guess who the cheerleaders are.

Actually there is a reply needed, IMO.

Why didn't the tancredo/bay buchanan PAC go after 2nd UT district democrat Congressman, Jim Matheson, who would vote for nancy pelosi for Speaker.

Face it, tancredo is a backstabber and his backstabbing power grabbing tactics have been exposed for all to see and a big plus, he lost bigtime.

Dane the race is over and Cannon won. You have now moved back to the agenda that motivated you to support him in the first place and it had nothing to do with Tancredo or Bay Buchanan but what is in this story, the call to "compromise" with the Senate. You knew that would be the result but it's failed. The most telling quote from it is this:

And House leaders said Cannon's win adds no momentum in the House to Bush's immigration policy. "The vast majority of our conference believes that strengthening our border, securing it and enforcing our laws are critical steps in the process of cleaning up the problem that we have," Boehner said.

Hearing that must make you very sad.

JMO, that quote from Boehner was a bone to you guys. Heck even the Fox News panel on Brit's show said that tancredo is now basically isolated,to bad he could have been somebody if he hadn't listened to joe farah and World Nut Daily and bay buchanan.

This primary sent shock waves through the Republican House caucus, and IMO Mike Pence's plan is going to have a serious hearing, which will bust a vein in tom tancredo's head, since his "issue"(and meal ticket) is gone.
