The band played neither Schubert's or Chopin's Ave. Here's the one they played, from the article:

"The version selected by the Jackson High School ensemble was written in 1964 by Franz Biebl as a choral arrangement for a German firefighters' choir."

It's amazing what you can discover by reading the entire article.

Ok, that is taking things a bit too far. No, not a bit too far, this is so over the top as to be insane. This was an orchestral piece. She was playing the music to Ave Maria on the saxophone. There were no lyrics and yet the school censors the song because the melody is too religious?

This is insane. Somebody has got to put an end to this insanity. We can now eliminate all music that has any religious origin from high school performances. That would include nearly every classical and baroque piece ever written.

My anger at this idiocy cannot be expressed in words.

You can find an MP3 of a choral version of the Biebl "Ave Maria" here:

Ithought it was just the version by Gounod that was banned. The Schubert version was okay. Supposedly Gounod wrote his version as a love song. Go figure.

Let's recap. Atheists are using religious fundamentalists as foot soldiers. The fundamentalists aim to make their own religion supreme once they are victorious. The wildly outnumbered atheists know this. Becoming Muslims at the point of a sword is what the athesits are planning to do.

Is that about it?

Repeat after me:

YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO A STATE-SPONSORED FORUM.

The school can do what it pleases; this girl can play Ave Maria anytime she likes on her own time.

Now, I agree, the school took things too far, since Ave Maria is a classical music piece rather than an overly religious song. As a legal principle, however, you have no right to say anything at all at graduation, let alone whatever you please.

You expressed it quite eloquently. I agree with you 100%

And, there's a high school wind ensemble playing the version mentioned in this article in the MP3 here. Scroll down to find the file:

Maybe. I was told it was Schubert's version. I'm still looking to see if there is something out there.

If you read the entire article, you'll see that it's neither version that was to be played. It's the version by Franz Beibl, writting in 1964.

I've posted a couple of links to MP3 files of that version.

And the reason liberals are so upset about religion is that the only god they worship is the god of the state. They hate competition.

Very well put. Far tooooooo true.

It was neither version. Instead, it was the version written by Franz Biebl in 1964. Read the thread. I have posted links to MP3 files. This was stated in the article, but you did have to click the link to find out.

Once upon a time Schubert's "Ave Maria"was thought to be too theatrical to be performed in some Catholic churches.

Ah. I should adopt a tagline about not reading the whole article.
You know, this whole bit, represented by the actions of the school, makes me wonder if society has joined the Mad Hatter at his tea party.

Aha. Found a reference (yes, its from Time magazine archives ). Apparently, both Gounod's and Schubert's versions were on the hit list.

What is really funny is that, as an instrumental, unless you were well versed in classical music, the non-religious would never have recognized the music.

Exactly. But the totalitarians in charge of Seattle public schools rightly fear subversive music like this. After all, it suggests there's something more than soul-killing cultural marxism out there.
