1776 doesn't mean anything to LA. Aztlan wants a regional holiday.

I think a lot of cities hold festivities in conjunction with national holidays and give them their own name.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see a smoking gun in this. I hate L.A. but not for this...

I suppose they will be flying the "Fiesta Flag"

I don't see where July 4th has any special place in Los Angeles' history.

It appears that the date is more worthy of being mentioned when it's Mexico's independence than when it's our own.

Put me down on the "militant" side here. This is cultural treason. LA is lost. I'm certain that the civil war between illegals and Americans we all know is coming will start there; my only question is when.

I don't see anything wrong with having a 'salute to L.A.' day, but why put it on the fourth, unless this was indeed a deliberate attempt to smear and denigrate the real meaning of the fourth of July (which I wouldn't put past them.)

In years past San Jose has celebrated July 4th with a "San Jose, America Festival" which was all about diversity and devoid of any American flags or signs of patriotism whatsoever. The event was primarily sponsored by the San Jose Mercury News. They always had an awesome fireworks display, i'll give 'em that.

This year, the Merc is out and the event being called "Festival of Independence" is being sponsored by NBC11 News. The website gives the impression that things may be different now. I hope so.

We haven't attended the thing for years because of the disrespect for the importance of this day, but this year we're going because we have guests and thought they might enjoy the fireworks and it looks like they'll have some fun events. We shall see....I won't hold my breath tho.

They should make "Cinqo de Mayo" (May 5th) a "Tribute to Sugar-Free Gum Day", and then publically gush about how nice it is that crowds in Phoenix and LA have turned out to honor SUGAR-FREE GUM.

I did a bit of research about the history of Los Angeles, specifically its history during the Mexican-American War.

The war was fought in California in 1846 and early 1847, with American forces driving the Mexicans out of California. The United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Capitulation at Cahuenga Pass on January 13, 1847. This treaty established the land which is now California as belonging to the United States.

At the end of the war itself, the American southwest as we know it (with the exception of the Gadsen Purchase which was added at the beginning of the 20th Century) was added to the United States via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848.

The treaty ended the war and gave the U.S undisputed control of Texas as well as California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming. What many people don't know is that in return, Mexico received $18,250,000, the equivalent of $627,500,000 in mid-2000s dollars. So it wasn't like we stole it from them.

Anyway, my research was to find out the significance of the July 4, 1847 date and how it relates to the City of Los Angeles. So as it turns out, it is the first United States Independence Day celebrated in Los Angeles after winning the city from Mexico. The celebration, which came in the midst of a war, was certainly a very patriotic affair to be sure. I have no problem if they feel like re-creating that. It was the first Independence Day when Los Angeles was a part of this country. The first time Los Angeles celebrated its freedom. The first time Los Angeles celebrated in unison with all other American cities across this great land.

So I don't really think they are seeking to replace Independence Day with this celebration. In fact, while I'm sure some of you think of this as a victory for the Mexicans who want L.A. to become a part of Mexico again, what they are actually doing is recreating the ceremony where the Americans of Los Angeles celebrated because they had driven the Mexicans out. How about that.

Kind of thought this was a different perspective on the topic. Let me know what you think.
