Senator's Plan B Puts Democrats in a Bind (Lieberman)
The New York Times ^ | 7/4/06 | PATRICK HEALY and JENNIFER MEDINA

Posted on 07/03/2006 9:30:51 PM PDT by LdSentinal

Six years ago Joseph I. Lieberman came within a hairbreadth of the vice presidency after the Democratic Party chose him as a moderate face whose support for family values and a stronger military might attract Reagan Democrats and independents.

Yet when Mr. Lieberman sought the party's presidential nomination in 2004, rank-and-file Democrats relegated him to the B list, behind Howard Dean and John Kerry, in large part because of his strong support for military action in Iraq.

Now Mr. Lieberman faces the prospect of rejection by the Democrats who know him best, the party faithful in Connecticut. Once more the problem is Iraq. But this time it is not only Mr. Lieberman who is being challenged; it is the national party leadership, as it faces a grassroots push to toughen its stand against the Iraq war and distance itself from a senator who supports the war.

Leaders of the national Democratic Party, like Mr. Dean, the chairman, and Charles S. Schumer, who is leading the effort to regain control of the Senate, may have to choose between Mr. Lieberman and an antiwar Democrat in the fall, when they had hoped to make Iraq squarely the president's problem.

"Karen Finney, a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, said the party would support its nominee this fall, whether it is Mr. Lieberman or Mr. Lamont."

The "support" will be pro forma if Lamont wins the nomination. Lamont will get no money from the DNC, and Lamont will just have to dip into his ample treasure chest.

It's difficult to understand how they could throw a safe winner like Lieberman under the bus over a single issue. The rage against the war must be everything for them. Lieberman is as far left as Ted Kennedy on everything except national security. It must be a litmus test for them. If you believe in the defense of our nation, you shouldn't be in office.

The brutal side of politics is that so many of Joe's elected long time DIM friends are not on the stump for him either.

That is pretty much it with the far left.

Watching the Kossacks destroy the Democratic Party from within is pretty entertaining. Pass the popcorn!

The Dems will not win either house this November. They will loose seats in both houses this November. Those Kos Kids are pulling the party right off the cliff. And when they loose this November it will not be a pretty sight.

Yeah, he's had to have been betrayed by allot of people to go from be so popular in that state, and being on the national ticket to where he is now. Fighting for his life in a primary because he believes in national security over politics. All of the people who have betrayed him must have more of a hatred for Bush, than loyalty to Lieberman. Those people are absolutely twisted with anger.

No, knowing the radicals that control the DNC, the "support" will be pro forma if Lieberman wins the nomination. Lieberman will get no money from the DNC, and Lieberman will just have to dip into his ample treasure chest.

Interesting how the NYTimes -- the great newspaper (ahem) -- quotes from the Daily Kos. Could that be their water reservoir where they all chug?

Does this potentially put Connecticut in play, giving the Republicans a chance to win the seat? That would be a very good way to add to the GOP majority!

I hope and think this is true. If being against the war on terror is necessary then the Democratic party is toast.

The rage against the war must be everything for them.

The Dems have no ideas. Their leaders have given up on any meaningful platform, and have pinned their hopes on things going badly in Iraq. Any Dem who supports the war is in trouble with the party.

I suppose the MSM has gotten the word, too, so it'll be Haditha and Gitmo stories 24/7. It's gonna be a long summer in Iraq.

To paraphrase Golda Meir, "The Democrats will stop their downward spiral when they can love their country more than they hate the president".

Not happening anytime soon either because they actually hate both. They have abandoned all sanity. A national party no more, as Zell said.

This is 1972 all over again, when the present radicals took over the Democratic Party.

You're so right KoRn....Many of these twisted magots who are kicking him to the curb share my blood. We've talked about Leiberman at length, I have to confess, I even voted for the guy at one time. Not for nothing, He's just a typical Jewish self-hating Liberal , but he has enough sense to see the world for what it is. The truth is, the left won't vote for anyone that agrees with Bush on ANY issue, right or wrong. They have simply entered "dilusional land"..never to return.

Not just Iraq, but Israel going into Gaza drives the John Walker Lindh wing of the Democratic party even further angrier.

I guess I shouldn't be astonished but I am. I can't believe the "elitist's newspaper of newspapers" quotes from the Daily Kos and proudly announces the source, as opposed to quoting an anonymous source.

Not a chance in hell. They are ditching Leiberman becasue he's too conservative, not because he fits their worldview.
