Actress/singer Jada Pinkett Smith is horrified by increasing gun crime in the United States, declaring the country must look to third world countries to rediscover its values.
The Wicked Wisdom frontwoman and her actor/rapper husband Will Smith have travelled to Africa on several occasions for charity work and have been humbled by citizens' appreciation of the basic things in life - like education.
The Smiths will fund and appear at Charles 'Charlie Mack' Alston's annual Party 4 Peace in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this weekend, which aims to raise awareness of street crime.
Pinkett Smith says: "It's pretty bad everywhere. I think we're in a worse situation now than I can think of ever. Just the amount of injustice that we're doing to one another. It's such a complicated issue.
"It's an epidemic. If you look at our homes, it's clear why. We need a new reality. The idea that we're supposed to sit back and wait for somebody to do something for us, that's not going to happen.
"I've gone to Africa where kids go to school and share one textbook, (I've met) kids that are walking three miles to school, three miles home because education is valued. What do we value? Nothing.

I've read this a couple of times and I see absolutely no reason to bash this woman. In fact, I applaud her for trying to do something. There certainly IS a lot of street crime in the inner cities, and the Smiths are providing money and time to help Charles Alson fight it. Good for them.
Dear Jada....for High School I am not sure of the exact distance but I had to walk 45 minutes to an hour to get to it. There was a school bus service but I would guess half the time if not more I walked often with a pack of books.

like islm and most other "3 world" countries....Africa in modern times has not produced anything of value on their own.....only extreme opression always resulting in exrteme poverty.
We even witnessed in most of our rememberences, the destruction of a great, self sufficient, exporter of goods....former Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, ground into the dust of history by the ignorant thug Mugabe.
Although I'm happy she finally realizes that doing things yourself (personal responsibilities) has merit; but I think this whole article speaks more about her own personal revelations, than reflecting ours. We all forget at FR that Hollywood hasn't caught up to us yet. They are still discovering the truth about character counting. Good girl, Mrs. Smith --- you're coming along nicely. Now, teach this to your children....we already know it.
I do see reason to criticize her. She's bashing our country - the country that gives billions to poor nations to try to help them, the country that relies entirely on the bravery of a volunteer military to defend its freedom, the country that stands by its friends when the EU and the UN don't have the balls to, and the country that has given her the right to be an activist and say whatever she wants.
But too many conservatives are self-hating. We blame ourselves for abortion even if we're pro-life activists. We lump our military sons and daughters in with draft dodgers. We say that MTV "shames" us even if we don't like it and don't watch it. And too many of us are willing to jump on the bandwagon of blind criticism of our country.
America has its flaws, but we should remember that liberals are responsible for most of them. Let's stop loathing ourselves and start loathing liberals.
Her husband's a rapper and she's horrified by guns in the US? As Mrs. Smith the world's her oyster and she can go anywhere she wants. The same is apparently true of her husband who is enjoying an "open" marriage.
