World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #4.
National Review Online ^ | August 02, 2006 | Walid Phares on the Mideast

Posted on 08/07/2006 3:43:15 PM PDT by DAVEY CROCKETT

Tehran & Damascus Move to Lebanon Lebanon-born Walid Phares is a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. Author of the recent book Future Jihad, he was also one of the architects of 2004’s United Nations resolution 1559, which called for the disarming of Hezbollah. NRO editor Kathryn Lopez recently talked to Phares about what’s going on in the Mideast, what happened to the Cedar Revolution, and this war we’re all in.

Kathryn Jean Lopez: What is “Future Jihad”? Are we seeing it in the Mideast now?

Walid Phares: “Future Jihad,” which has already begun, refers to a new and potent form of Islamic terrorism, characterized by a Khumeinist-Baathist axis. These are the two trees of jihadism, so to speak — the Salafism and Wahabism embodied in al Qaeda and the sort of jihadism led by Iran and also including Syria, Hezbollah, and their allies in Lebanon.

The alliance has not been in entire agreement as to strategy. The al Qaeda branch began its “Future Jihad” in the 1990s; its efforts culminated on 9/11 and have continued explosively since then. The international “Salafists” aimed at the U.S. in the past decade in order to strengthen their jihads on various battlefields (Chechnya, India, Sudan, Algeria, Indonesia, Palestine, etc.). “Weaken the resolve of America,” their ideologues said, “and the jihadists would overwhelm all the regional battlefields.”

As I argue in Future Jihad, bin Laden and his colleagues miscalculated on the timing of the massive attack against the U.S. in 2001. While they wounded America, they didn’t kill its will to fight (as was the case, for instance, in the Madrid 3/11 attacks). I have heard many jihadi cadres online, and have seen al Jazeera commentators on television, offering hints of criticism about the timing. They were blaming al Qaeda for shooting its imagined “silver bullet” before insuring a strategic follow up. But bin Laden and Zawahiri believe 9/11 served them well, and has put a global mobilization into motion. Perhaps it has, but the U.S. counter strategy in the Middle East, chaotic as the region currently appears, has unleashed counter jihadi forces. The jury is still out as to the time factor: when these forces will begin to weaken the jihadists depends on our perseverance and the public understanding of the whole conflict.

The other “tree” of jihadism, with its roots in Iran, withheld fire after 9/11. They were content to watch the Salafists fight it out with the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention within the West, as terror cells were hunted down. Ahmedinejad, Assad, and Nasrallah were analyzing how far the US would go, and how far the Sunnis and Salafis would go as well.

The fall of the Taliban and of the Baath in Iraq, however, changed Iran and Syria’s patient plans. The political changes in the neighborhood, regardless of their immediate instability, were strongly felt in Tehran and Damascus (but unfortunately not in the U.S., judging from the political debate here), and pushed the Khumeinists and the Syrian Baathists to enter the dance, but carefully. Assad opened his borders to the jihadists in an attempt to crumble the U.S. role in Iraq, while Iran articulated al Sadr’s ideology for Iraq’s Shiia majority.

A U.S.-led response came swiftly in 2004 with the voting of UNSCR 1559, smashing Syria’s role in Lebanon and forcing Assad to withdraw his troops by April 2005. In response, the “axis” prepared for a counter attack on the Lebanese battlefield by assassinating a number of the Cedar Revolution leaders, including MP Jebran Tueni. In short, the attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah and the kidnappings of soldiers were the tip of an offensive aimed at drawing attention away from Iran’s nuclear weapons programs and Syria’s assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri. Hezbollah was awaiting its moment for revenge against the Cedar Revolution too.

What we see now is 1) a Syro-Iranian sponsored offensive aimed at all democracies in the region and fought in Lebanon; 2) Israel’s counter offensive (which it seems to have prepared earlier); and 3) an attempt by Hezbollah to take over or crumble the Lebanese government.

Lopez: So…did the Cedar Revolution fail?

Phares: Actually, it would be more accurate to say that the Cedar Revolution was failed. The masses in Lebanon responded courageously in March 2005 by putting 1.5 million people on the streets of Beirut. They did it without “no-fly-zones,” expeditionary forces, or any weapons at all, for that matter, and against the power of three regimes, Iran, Syria, and pro-Syrian Lebanon, in addition to Hezbollah terror. The “revolution” was for a time astoundingly successful; since then it has been horribly failed, and first of all by Lebanon’s politicians themselves. One of their leaders, General Michel Aoun, shifted his allegiances to Syria and signed a document with Hezbollah. Other politicians from the “March 14 Movement” then stopped the demonstrations, leaving them with the support of God knows what. They failed in removing the pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud and brought back a pro-Syrian politician to serve as a speaker of the house, Nabih Berri. Meanwhile, even as they were elected by the faithful Cedar Revolution masses, they engaged in a round table dialogue with Hezbollah, a clear trap set by Hassan Nasrallah: “Let’s talk about the future,” he said — with the implication, of course, that they forget about the Cedar Revolution and the militia’s disarming. While political leaders sat for months, enjoying the photo ops with Hassan Nasrallah, he was preparing his counter offensive, which he unleashed just a few days before the Security Council would discuss the future of Iran’s nuclear programs.

The Lebanese government of Prime Minister Seniora also abandoned the Cedar Revolution. His cabinet neither disarmed Hezbollah nor called on the U.N. to help in implementing UNSCR 1559. This omission is baffling. The government was given so much support by the international community and, more importantly, overwhelming popular support inside Lebanon: 80 percent of the people were hoping the Cedar Revolution-backed government would be the one to resume the liberation of the country. Now Hezbollah has an upper hand and the government is on the defensive.

The U.S. and its allies can be accused of certain shortcomings as well. While the speeches by the U.S. president, congressional leaders from both parties, Tony Blair, and Jacques Chirac were right on target regarding Lebanon, and while the U.S. and its counterparts on the Security Council were diligent in their follow up on the Hariri assassination and on implementing UNSCR 1559, there was no policy or plan to support the popular movement in Lebanon. Incredibly, while billions were spent on the war of ideas in the region, Lebanese NGOs that wanted to resume the struggle of the Cedar Revolution and fighting alone for this purpose were not taken seriously at various levels. Policy planners thought they were dealing with the “Cedar Revolution” when they were meeting Lebanon’s government and Lebanese politicians. The difference between the high level speeches on Lebanon and the laissez-faire approach from lower levels is amazing. Simply put, there was no policy on supporting the Cedar Revolution against the three regimes opposing it and the $400 million received by Hezbollah from Iran.

The Cedar Revolution was basically betrayed by its own politicians and is now essentially without a head. Nevertheless, as long as the international support remains, the Revolution will find its way and will face the dangers. The one and a half million ordinary citizens who braved all the dangers didn’t change their minds about Hezbollah’s terror. The resistance and counter-attack was to be expected. Unfortunately, thus far Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah have outmaneuvered the West and are at the throats of the Cedar Revolution. The international community must revise its plans, and, if it is strongly backed by the U.S. and its allies, including France, the situation can be salvaged. The good seeds are still inside the country.

“War is . . . an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will.”
— Carl von Clausewitz1

The strategic nature of war has changed, and our military and government are striving to adapt to fight and win in this new environment. Today we are engaged in a global counterinsurgency, an unprecedented challenge which requires a level of original strategic thought and depth of understanding perhaps comparable only to that of the Cold War. Our ongoing political-military actions to achieve success in Iraq and Afghanistan are simply subordinate efforts of this larger, complex world war.

Our enemies today clearly understand the value of asymmetrical approaches when dealing with the overwhelming conventional combat power of the United States military. Unfortunately, our unmatched conventional capability has slowed the US response to the changing, asymmetrical nature of modern war.2 We as a military are at risk of failing to understand the nature of the war we are fighting—a war which has been characterized as “a war of intelligence and a war of perceptions.”3 We must confront this dilemma and take our thinking to a new strategic level in this era to understand the tools and strategic approaches required to create victory in this very different 21st-century environment.

Joyce Morrison
August 6, 2006

The United Nations Agenda 21 was signed by the United States in 1992 and 14 years later, people are still in the dark. If you were to ask at random the question, "Have you heard of Agenda 21?" the answer would be an over-whelming "No," although it is being implemented in every local community.

Agenda 21 is a 40 chapter document listing goals to be achieved globally. It is the global plan to change the way we "live, eat, learn and communicate" because we must "save the earth."

"Its regulation would severely limit water, electricity, and transportation - even deny human access to our most treasured wilderness areas, it would monitor all lands and people. No one would be free from the watchful eye of the new global tracking and information system," according to Berit Kjos, author of Brave New Schools.

Maurice Strong, Secretary-general of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro said, "...[C]urrent lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class - involving high meat consumption and large amounts of frozen and convenience foods, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and workplace air-conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable. A shift is necessary which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations.

In other words, the Global plan is for us to live on the level of third world nations. That means no box mixes or microwave meals, limited use of fuel of any kind, no air-conditioning and very little meat. When the cost of freon skyrocketed, when mad cow disease hit, the National Animal Identification System introduced, the price of fuel soared, it has become apparent that given time, these sustainable controls will be put into place - one way or another - and the Global Governance is powerful.

In 1992, Agenda 21 began to change our lives. In that same year, Al Gore wrote his book, Earth in the Balance. To advance his cause, he has now written another piece of fiction entitled, An Inconvenient Truth about global warming…..he even starred in the movie. He also thinks he invented the internet.

Although groundwork had been laid, it took a Bill Clinton to actually introduce something so invasive to our nation and get by with it without the public becoming aware. President Clinton appointed his "President’s Council on Sustainable Development" and he literally gave away the rights and freedoms the framers of the Constitution had provided.

People in the United States may not know about Agenda 21 and the President’s Council on Sustainable Development, but people around the world do. They know that Chicago has one of the greatest numbers of activities existing at the local, neighborhood and/or microregional level. They also know that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitors and promotes activities in this field through their Office for Sustainable Ecosystem and Communities.

Found on a Slovakian website: "To the leading countries in the field of development but especially of practical using of sustainable development indicators belong to the U.S.A. At the top level these activities are promoted by the President’s Council on Sustainable Development (1996), which defined a set of ten national goals toward sustainable development. These goals express in concrete terms the elements of sustainability. Alongside the goals are suggested indicators that can be used to help measure progress toward achieving them.”

Agenda 21 is certainly not a secret. The internet is full of how Agenda 21 has been fulfilled through Smart Growth planning, land use, sustainable development and extreme environmentalism. The so-called agenda is grant driven to your city council or county board in terms of sustainable, visioning, partners, tourism and stakeholders, along with consensus and other terms with the intent to make you believe we are running out of all our resources and we must do our part and "save for tomorrow. [See Agenda 21's Table of Contents.]

It has nothing to do about “saving anything” – it has everything to do with “control.” Sadly, very few congressmen even know Agenda 21 is actually running our country when they are voting to send grant money back home. Agenda 21 is incentive driven as the planners know that greed in the heart of man will be his downfall.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, better known as ANWR, has oil we need to be drilling for the security of our nation. Environmentalists don’t seem to understand we are dependent on foreign oil from nations who do not like us and our nation’s defense is at stake. The area where drilling would occur is just a dot in this vast land, yet they would gamble the strength of our nation in behalf of their favorite word --"pristine."

At the same time, technology is advancing and we may not need the oil later. But we do need it now.

Henry Lamb of Eco-logic, Restructuring the U.N.,

The world changed on 9-11. No longer can the world tilt at the windmills of a fantasized "global village." No longer can visions of "sustainable development" be justified in a world where "sustainable freedom" is the only possible solution to the economic and power vacuum that foments acts of terrorism.

There is a better way.

Nations can and, ultimately, must learn to live as neighbors, free from the web of "international laws" that dictate which activities are "sustainable" and which are xenophobic and unacceptable. Nation-to-nation relationships, just like neighbor-to-neighbor relationships, should be fashioned voluntarily, driven by mutual benefit. For the first time in a century, the United States may be exploring this possibility.

Henry Lamb is right. We can live as neighbors with other nations but we do not need to live under a "web of international law." There are dedicated citizens in the United States who are wise enough to set our nation’s guidelines without following Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development as set forth by the United Nations. [See DVD: Liberty or Sustainable Development?]

One of the main goals of Agenda 21 is to redistribute the wealth to third world countries and to bring our great nation to its knees in the name of socialism, fascism, communism or some other “ism.” Our founding fathers founded this nation on the belief of a Sovereign God and we have been blessed. Do you know the Gods of the nations to which we would become equal?

CIA Renegades

by Steven Plaut
Sunday, October 2, 2005

The Left has long painted the CIA as a far-Right neofascist bogeyman, dominated by reactionary Dr. Strangeloves, and paranoid “neoncons.”
The reality, of course, has long been very different. In fact, the CIA has long been dominated by liberal ideology and the left-leaning, blame-America mindset. Those who are skeptical of this last assertion should read one of the most important books ever written about intelligence services: Informing Statecraft: Intelligence for a New Century by Angelo Codevilla. In this book, to which I cannot do full justice here, he shows how the many failures of the CIA trace back to its kneejerk liberalism and politically correct delusions.

The liberal mindset of the CIA has not only led to a long series of grave errors in judgment and gross misreadings of many international situations; it has also led it to hire large numbers of radicals into its ranks. The extent of the damage done by such people can only be guessed, but a good idea of the dimensions can be gleaned from observing the behavior of the growing number of far-left ex-CIA employees running about in the anti-America movement today.

Leftists emerging from the shadows of the American intelligence community are of course nothing new. The most famous postwar example was no doubt Daniel Ellsberg, who has spent his later years as a button man for the far Left. Ellsberg, however, was never actually employed by the CIA, but by RAND. Others, at least as radical as him, were. Of those, the worst is arguably Philip Agee, who left the CIA and published the seditious Covert Action Information Bulletin, with the help of both the KGB and the Cuban DGI, a magazine dedicated to promoting "a worldwide campaign to destabilize the CIA through exposure of its operations and personnel." Agee told Swiss journalist Peter Studer, “The CIA is plainly on the wrong side, that is, the capitalistic side. I approve KGB activities, communist activities in general. Between the overdone activities that the CIA initiates and the more modest activities of the KGB, there is absolutely no comparison.” Today Agee runs a website from his home in Havana,, and is a dedicated communist.

In recent years, veterans of the CIA who were employed by the Agency have emerged as some of the most extremist bashers of America in the ”antiwar movement”. One well-known example is Michael Scheuer, who anonymously penned Imperial Hubris, a book critical of the conduct of the war on terrorism since the mid-1990s. Scheuer had been assigned to create a “bin Laden desk” at the CIA. After resigning from the Agency, he went on a campaign against the US invasion of Iraq, warning that Moslems worldwide were growing to hate the US because of its “policies”, and in particular he blamed US support for Israel for anti-American terrorism. He considers bin Laden to be a “great man”.

Former CIA agent Melvin Goodman holds roughly similar political opinions, claims the CIA is being used to recruit public opinion and undermine domestic opposition to Bush’s policies, and is similarly politically active and tied to leftist groups. He denounces the CIA for its failure to predict the collapse of the Soviet Union, although gives no evidence that he had himself predicted any such collapse before it occurred. Goodman also seems to endorse 9-11 conspiracy “theories”. Appearing at Rep. Cynthia McKinney’s hearings, which featured panelists who posited theories on 9/11 ranging from the Twin Towers coming down as a result of a “controlled demolition” to the Pentagon being blown up deliberately and not partially destroyed by a hijacked aircraft, Goodman was quoted as saying about McKinney, “I hope someday her views will be considered conventional wisdom.”

Of those leftist ex-agents of the CIA who are publicly active in leftist policics, most are also openly anti-Semitic, with deep ties not only to radical leftist groups but also to neonazi and Holocaust Denial organizations and web sites; the most notable illustration is the husband-and-wife team of William and Kathleen Christison, to whom we will return shortly.

Radical leftist ex-CIA employees are not as rare as one might suppose. Several of them in fact have banded together to form the “Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity”. This was founded by one Ray McGovern, who once worked in the CIA’s Russian desk before the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, and claims his group now contains 35 disgruntled ex-employees who left the Agency. William (“Bill”) Christison was a member of its “steering committee”, and his wife Kathleen a rank and file member. Another member, David MacMichael, has helped promote the urban myths about the CIA being involved in the drug trade. When Danny Casolaro, a Washington D.C. freelance investigator, was found dead in a hotel room, evidently having committed suicide, MacMichael helped fabricate a “theory” that the CIA or FBI had murdered him, a theory that has naturally been “adopted” by dozens of conspiracist web sites.

Whatever the true size of VIPS’ membership, the group has acted as little more than a far-left anti-American group, allied with some of the most extremist organizations in the “antiwar movement”, and having a special obsession with bashing Israel. Its members have appeared in several far-leftist video “documentaries”, including “Uncovered: the Whole Truth About the Iraq War” (Robert Greenwald) and “Break the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror” (John Pilger). In a rather typical statement in February 2003, the group blamed all of the problems in the Middle East on Israel.

VIPS’ Ray McGovern repeatedly blamed Israel for the 9-11 attacks, such as in a letter to the Christian Science Monitor just days after 9-11. In an interview in the left-wing Sojourners magazine, he claimed, “The war on Iraq was just as much prompted by the strategic objectives of the state of Israel as it was the strategic objectives of the United States.” He has repeated the claim that Israel is manipulating and controlling American foreign policy, and comes within inches of ranting about some grand Jewish cabal and conspiracy. He has accused Bush of being “out of his mind”. His articles appear on the pro-terror web site and in other similarly extremist web magazines. He claims to believe that the US was planning to “plant” weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify the invasion, an assertion that long ago became part of the canon on conspiracist web magazines. His evidence was to claim that American intelligence had lied during World War II and in other arenas of operations. Today he is involved in some leftist church group and he is a booster for Cindy Sheehan.

“Bill” Christison’s bio claims that he joined the CIA in 1950 and served on the analysis side of the Agency for 28 years. He later served as National Intelligence Officer in several areas in the Third World and as Director of the CIA's Office of Regional and Political Analysis. His main take on the 9-11 attacks on America was that they were the comeuppance the US deserved for its unjust foreign policies and especially for its criminal support of Israel’s determination not to be annihilated. He opposes any American military action at all against Islamic terrorists, and instead suggests that they be dealt with by having their demands met.

The “Uruknet” web site of Iraqi Ba’athist pro-Saddam exiles has published at least five Christison articles. There is little about Saddam Hussein that Bill does not like and ditto for North Korea. He has written: “Largely because North Korea already has a few nuclear weapons, the U.S. has been deterred from the kind of aggressive action it has employed against non-nuclear Iraq, and has been forced to rely on diplomacy. And that's a good thing. (emphasis added)”

VIPS' ex-member Kathleen Christison, wife of “Bill”, was a CIA “political analyst”, which tells us volumes about why CIA analysis is so often wrong. Incredibly, given what she now writes, she was evidently assigned to analyze developments among “Palestinians” while still at the Agency. Kathleen Christison, quite simply, understands absolutely nothing about the Middle East. Needless to say, neither Christison speaks Arabic or Hebrew, yet on the basis of their two-week travel junkets they claim to be “experts.” A typical proclamation by Kathleen reads: “Before there was terrorism, there was the (Israeli) occupation. Before there was terrorism, there were (Israeli) settlements.” Actually Arab anti-Jewish terror started decades before Israel “occupied” the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, and before there were any “settlements” constructed in those areas. So how could such a person be a Middle East “analyst” for the intelligence service of the world’s only superpower?

Kathleen Christison says in her bio that she is today “preoccupied (her word) by the issue of Palestine.” She has published several “books” that are nothing more than anti-Israel pro-terror propaganda screeds, including Perceptions of Palestine and The Wound of Dispossession, both published by the University of California Press, a publishing house that just can’t seem to find enough anti-Israel books to squeeze into its publication schedule. Her “books” got rave reviews from the “Radio Islam” web site, which not only supports bin Laden, but routinely reproduces neonazi and Holocaust Denial materials on its site, including the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” While allied with the world’s most open racists, Kathleen rants that Zionism is a form of racism and that Israel is an apartheid country. Arabs who blow up buses full of Jewish children are NOT racists and certainly not terrorists in the Christison point of view.

Kathleen Christison often crosses the line from merely demonizing Israel to smearing all Jews. She claims that all Jews are “self-absorbed” and blames them for not coming out openly in support of destroying Israel. She mocks and derides Jewish leftists who think that, in spite of its faults – real and imaginary, Israel has as much right to exist as other countries. Kathleen will hear nothing of that! Even one of Israel’s leading “post-Zionists” has publicly denounced the Christisons for their anti-Israel bias.

The two Christisons are today a husband and wife SWAT team for both the anti-Semitic Far Left and Neonazi Right, although they despise Christian pro-Zionists almost as much as Jews. They are so extremist that even the pro-terror Kroc Institute at Notre Dame University, which tried to sponsor Tariq Ramadan in the US, cut its ties with the duo. Both are regular columnists for Alexander Cockburn’s Counterpunch web magazine. They claim the US is seeking “global hegemony”. They have written that the Bush Administration is governed by “dual loyalties”, that old smear-term applied to Jews, because Israel supposedly controls American foreign policy. They use the term “neocon” as interchangeable with “Jew”. In writing about Jews, the Christisons sound like typical commentators on Holocaust Denial neonazi web magazines:

The issue we are dealing with in the Bush administration is dual loyalties-the double allegiance of those myriad officials at high and middle levels who cannot distinguish U.S. interests from Israeli interests, who baldly promote the supposed identity of interests between the United States and Israel, who spent their early careers giving policy advice to right-wing Israeli governments and now give the identical advice to a right-wing U.S. government, and who, one suspects, are so wrapped up in their concern for the fate of Israel that they honestly do not know whether their own passion about advancing the U.S. imperium is motivated primarily by America-first patriotism or is governed first and foremost by a desire to secure Israel's safety and predominance in the Middle East through the advancement of the U.S. imperium. "Dual loyalties" has always been one of those red flags posted around the subject of Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict, something that induces horrified gasps and rapid heartbeats because of its implication of Jewish disloyalty.
The Christison pair claim to have resigned from VIPS in 2003, a cosmic development that they ceremoniously announced in an article in Counterpunch. Their resignation was, in their own words, explained thus: “We share the disgust of other VIPS members at the aggressive policy direction of this administration and particularly at its distortion and politicization of intelligence. Our disagreement is over methods, not principles….We continue to respect the VIPS organization itself and its purposes.” They claim they were upset by the VIPS call for Cheney to resign, but a far more credible explanation would seem to be be that the Christisons just resented being outshined and upstaged by VIPS’ Ray McGovern.

The Christison pair devote themselves to demonizing Israel from their home in Santa Fe and they seem to do little else. They paint Israel as an apartheid state mistreating Arabs, and one would never know from their writings that Arabs in Israel are treated a thousand times better than are Arabs are in Arab countries. They repeat anti-Semitic conspiracy nonsense about how a cabal of Jews has seized control of the United States. They denounced the 9-11 Commission report because it failed to blame the 9-11 attacks on the Jews.

Kathleen Christison has turned justifying Palestinian terrorism into an art form. Her “expertise” on Palestinians is based upon having taken a couple of short tours through the region over the years. She constantly plays Orwellian games with words like “terror” and “violence”, so that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip count as “terrorism,” but Palestinians blowing up buses full of Israeli children do not.

She is a master of the Orwellian inversion: Israeli retaliations cause Palestinian terror attacks and not the other way around; Israelis run around murdering Palestinian civilians for the heck of it, while Hamas terrorists are merely protesting occupation. It is Israel that is seeking to perpetrate “ethnocide against a powerless people,” and not the other way around. Kathleen insists that Palestinians have the right to use terror because THEIR weapons are mere suicide bombs, whereas Israel loses its right to defend itself because IT actually uses helicopters against the terrorists. Her definition of “terrorism” is flexible, and is constantly adjusted so that Arab and Islamic terror is always legitimized, whereas the only permissible form of self-defense for Israel is to capitulate to terrorist demands.

Kathleen claims the PLO has long ago recognized Israel’s right to exist, something that will no doubt surprise the PLO, and that the Palestinian Authority has even supposedly purged all those anti-Semitic images from the Palestinian textbooks that the Christisons are unwilling and incapable of reading. Here is a typical example of Christison “fact checking”: “The ISM (International Solidarity Movement, to which Rachel Corrie belonged) has (never) been associated with terrorism of any sort.” The only Israelis whose right to exist she recognizes are Israel’s extremist far-leftist anti-Zionists, Israel’s equivalents to Noam Chomsky and Ward Churchill. When it comes to smearing Israel, Christison feels not even the tiniest need to stick to facts. And she is incapable of parsing statements she hears from Arab propagandists:

“Palestinians in both Palestine and Amman made a point of telling us that Arabs like and respect the American people, have always loved what America stands for, but now hate the U.S. government and its policies. We heard this so often that the message almost became a ritual. It's a sincere message nonetheless.”
Sure it is. She insists that the near-suicidal offer from Israel’s leftist Prime Minister Ehud Barak to the PLO at Camp David in 2000 was not a generous offer at all, I guess because it did not involve the immediate annihilation of Israel.

Kathleen ran a column devoted to serious discussion of a “report” (meaning a rumor) she heard from an Israeli far-leftist extremist reporter, one who has already been convicted in a court for fabrication (Amira Hass, who is also on record calling for Israel’s elimination), about an Israeli supposedly defecating on a Palestinian photocopying machine. Forget 9-11, folks, the Christisons have discovered a REAL human rights atrocity! This alleged morning dump proves that Israel is an immoral society, opines the same columnist who has never denounced a single Palestinian atrocity against Jewish civilians.

Here is her conclusions from this alleged potty incident (one which no other media outfit reported, by the way):

“Is it anti-Semitic to wonder what happened to the moral compass of a society that spawns a group of young men who will intermingle their own religious and national symbols with feces and urine, as if the drawings and the excrement both constitute valued autographs? Do they think Israeli shit is cleaner, holier than anyone else's? Why are my taxes paying for this army? How can Palestinians ever make peace in the face of filth and disrespect like this?”
Is it anti-Semitic to conclude that Israel must be destroyed simply because of a rumor that someone crapped on a photocopy machine? You bet it is!

The Christisons continue their obsessive interest in the potty functions of Jews, in their newest “Number Two “ commentary in Counterpunch, “Polluting Palestine: The Settlements and their Sewage”. (You can see that the Christisons have not spent much time touring the Middle East if the only pollution they can locate comes from Israelis.)

And destruction of Israel, with the inevitable accompanying second Holocaust, is openly what the Christison’s advocate. They do so on Palestinian pro-terror propaganda web sites, where they urge people to think “beyond the existence of Israel as a Jewish state.” They insist there is no room for people claiming they are “neutral” in the Middle East conflict, supporting the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians. The only permissible position is one requiring that Israel be annihilated. Israel is the ONLY country on earth that the Christisons seem to think needs annihilation, although it would not surprise us if one day they were to come out in favor of the elimination of the United States as well. Singling out Israel, of course, should not make anyone suspect that THEY are anti-Semitic, they reiterate while goosestepping their way through the web.

Kathleen Christison claims that “Palestinians” were historically denied the attention of American statesmen, no doubt due to Jewish influence, going all the way back to Woodrow Wilson. The great irony of course is that the term “Palestinian” referred to Jews living in the Land of Israel down until 1948, and “Palestinian” Arabs were never regarded by the Arab world as a separate people at all until 1967, when they were Sudetenized and defining them as a “people” turned out to be such a wonderful propaganda bludgeon against Israel.

The Institute for Historical Review (IHR) is one of the largest neonazi web sites on earth, and proudly calls itself a site of Holocaust Deniers. Besides serving as cheerleader for deported Canadian nazi Ernst Zundel, it routinely praises and reproduces the work of the Christisons, including their articles denouncing the Jewish “neocons”. IHR routinely dismisses the Holocaust as a myth, denies that German Nazis ever used gas chambers to commit mass-murder, and insists that Auschwitz was never used for mass execution of Jews. It has run Christison articles on the exact same pages calling for demonstrations against the Simon Wiesenthal Center. And IHR is not the only neonazi web site that regular publishes the Christisons. Others include “Liberty Forum”, Stormfront (white supremacists), and web sites claiming that the Jews actually were behind the 9-11 attacks on the US.

This month, the lead article on the IHR site is a reprint of the Christisons’ article “Travels in Palestine”. The Christisons do not seem to be bothered by the fact that they are so popular on neonazi web sites, and Alexander Cockburn does not seem to mind sharing so many of his columnists with Holocaust Denial web sites. (Needless to say, the Chistisons are NOT the ONLY Counterpunch regulars with ties to neonazi web sites and organizations.) Both Christisons regularly contribute articles not only to Counterpunch, but also to the anti-Jewish and anti-American books edited by Cockburn, which Counterpunch publishes.

Christison has declared US intelligence policy to be a “monstrous mess”. The very fact that characters like the Christisons and the other extremists once drew their salaries from intelligence services proves better than anything else possibly could what a mess it really is.

Planning and reacting to a bioterrorist attack Filed under: Preparedness — @ Planning may involve the development of biological identification systems. Until recently in the United States of America, most biological defense strategies have been geared to protecting soldiers on the battlefield rather than ordinary people in cities. Financial cutbacks have limited the tracking of disease outbreaks. Some, like food poisoning due to E. coli or Salmonella, could be natural or deliberate. In Europe, disease surveillance is beginning to be organised on the continent-wide scale needed to track a biological emergency. In addition of monitoring sick people, it is thought interesting to track whether a disease is due to natural outbreaks or deliberate attack. For example, a natural variety of anthrax occurs in southern Africa. Researchers are experimenting with devices to detect the existence of a threat: tiny electronic chips that would contain living nerve cells to warn of the presence of bacterial toxins (identification of broad range toxins) fibre-optic tube lined with antibodies coupled to light-emitting molecules (identification of specific pathogens, such as anthrax, botulinum, ricin) Plants as sensors Very recently, public research has been approved to set up some genetically modified plants that could, in an immediate future, being made profitable to alert the population and the authorities in the event of chemical or biological attack. These new plants specifically modified would change color in contact with certain chemical elements, or biological agents, likely to be used at the time of possible terrorist attacks. The plants — opportunely placed in public places — would lose their green color quickly, thus setting off the alarm. Arguments given to justify this option is that people are used to plants much more than to chemical sensors and the use in public places would not worry the population. Another argument is that these GMO sentinels could be deployed on vast geographical areas and their system of detection could be introduced into the evergreen trees and the algae of the watery zones, making it possible for satellites to supervise and perceive any change of color due to a hostile agent. Reaction involves setting up local emergency rooms and offices to immediately deal with the outcome in case of an attack instruction and training for local communities protective clothing for military personnel tracking down of people buying materials involved in biological warfare Once the biological agent has been identified, it can be fought through vaccination of people before they are exposed. However, vaccines are not considered to be a perfect solution. A bioterrorist could develop novel, possibly artificial, pathogens against which conventional vaccines would be useless. Consequently, some suggest that it would be interesting to look for ways of developing vaccines quickly enough for them to be created, mass-produced and distributed after an attack. This could involve progress in DNA sequencing so that an unknown pathogen’s genes could be known very quickly. The resulting sequences could help in the development of an instant DNA vaccine. Another major issue with vaccines is that they often have side-effects which are sometimes lethal, and hence a massive inoculation program may result in deaths and illness which would be unnecessary if no biological attack occurs. This issue has a particular with the smallpox and anthrax vaccines. Making the vaccine is not the totality of the solution. It is rather easy to order soldiers to take the vaccine, but immunizing the population is not, in particular with a vaccine making people sick, with all the controversies already going around vaccination. For these reasons, some feel that researchers should concentrate on ways to treat victims of biological weapons. For example, Ebola kills people by inducing a widespread inflammatory reaction (similar to toxic shock syndrome). This could be fought by a new and very powerful anti-inflammatory drug. MUCH MUCH MORE AT LINK...

Wildfires in Spain reported to be arson

1 hour, 35 minutes ago

Dozens of wildfires raged across northwestern Spain on Monday, and authorities said most of the blazes that have killed three people and destroyed thousands of acres of woodland were deliberately set.

More than 90 wildfires were reported over the weekend in Galicia, where almost 12,355 acres have been charred. Authorities said 85 were still ablaze Monday.

Many of the fires had been started near each other with a clear intention that winds would fan them into one big conflagration, said fire department spokeswoman Iria Mendez.

Most were started on wooded slopes near inhabited areas, regional environment spokesman Alfredo Suarez Canal said.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of starting several wildfires after authorities acted on tips from residents in Cerdedo, a town in Pontevedra, the Galician regional government said.

The man, whom authorities have not linked to any of the three fire-related deaths in Galicia since Thursday, was identified only by his initials.

Earlier, authorities said a 74-year-old man had died while fighting a fire in Pontevedra. Manuel Aprada Fontella, who had joined other neighbors as a volunteer in the firefighting operation, was found late Sunday.

Wildfires also were reported on the other side of Spain in the northeastern region of Catalonia.

Transatlantic flight turns back to London over security alert

British authorities questioned four people at London's Heathrow Airport after a flight to Boston turned around midway across the Atlantic because of a security alert.

American Airlines flight 109 carried 240 passengers and 13 crew members on the Boeing 777 jet, which landed back in London four hours after it departed.

Four of the passengers were escorted from the plane when it landed in London, where six police officers were waiting for them, a Heathrow Airport spokeswoman told AFP.

Anneliese Morris of American Airlines said the turn-around was "due to a security issue that needed to be resolved in London," but declined to comment further.

A spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan Police told AFP four people were interviewed by police officers at the airport, but had not been arrested. She declined to give details on the four.

Britain's domestic Press Association said the four passengers questioned were believed to be a man who had been travelling with three women, believed to be his mother and two sisters.

U.S. sanctions related to Russia arms deals with Venezuela

MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Defense Ministry said
U.S. sanctions against two Russian state-owned companies were linked
with their contracts with Venezuela.

The U.S. State Department announced Friday the introduction of
against Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport and state-owned
aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi over their cooperation with Iran.

A high-ranking official in the Defense Ministry said, "Obviously, this
decision is a reaction to recent successes of our companies in
concluding beneficial contracts on arms supplies to Venezuela."

Russia signed $1-billion contracts on supplies of 30 Su-30 Flanker
air-superiority fighters and 30 helicopters to Venezuela in July prior
to the visit to Russia by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has
moved to curb American influence in the region and consolidate ties
other South American nations since he came to power in 1998.

The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed the U.S. sanctions Friday saying,
"Our companies stand accused of violating the Iran Nonproliferation Act
of 2000. We consider these actions by the U.S. State Department

"Russian companies cooperating with other countries in the
military-technical sphere are acting in strict compliance with the
of international law, as well as Russian law, including Russia's
obligations on nuclear nonproliferation and export control," the
ministry said.

The source in the Defense Ministry also said the U.S. accusations that
the Russian companies were supplying technologies, which Iran could use
to produce weapons of mass destruction, were groundless.

"They [the companies] have violated no international obligations and
U.S. is well aware of this," he said.

The source called the U.S. sanctions "dishonest competition on the arms

Some countries, led by the United States, suspect Tehran of pursuing a
secret weapons program. Iran has consistently stated that it only wants
nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Saudi-funded charity linked to Bali bombs

Cameron Stewart
August 08, 2006
SAUDI Arabia has been secretly bankrolling the terror group responsible for killing 92 Australians in the two Bali bombings.
US intelligence agencies have confirmed links between a Saudi charity, the International Islamic Relief Organisation, and the Indonesian terror group Jemaah Islamiah.

The IIRO is also registered in NSW under the name of Shafiq Rahman Abdullah Khan - a prominent member of Sydney's Muslim community who helps distribute Saudi government funds to Islamic projects in Australia.

However, Mr Khan insisted yesterday that the IIRO was not active in Australia.

"They never did open an office here and I am not representing them," he told The Australian.

The IIRO is not listed as a terrorist organisation in Australia, but in 2004 the federal Government warned Saudi Arabia to alert it about all Saudi funds arriving in the country after ASIO expressed concern about how they might be used.

The US Treasury last Thursday publicly identified the Indonesian and Philippines offices of the Saudi government-sanctioned IIRO as "facilitating fundraising for al-Qa'ida and affiliated terrorist groups".

It has also identified a senior IIRO official in Saudi Arabia, Abd Al Hamid Sulaiman al-Mujil, of "using his position to bankroll the al-Qa'ida network in Southeast Asia".

It describes Mr Mujil as a "major fundraiser" for JI, the group that carried out the Bali bombings of 2002 and last year.

The Australian and US governments have long been concerned about the role played by the Saudi charities in funding terrorist groups, but the US has not openly accused Saudi Arabia of funding JI until now.

American academic Zachary Abuza said it was clear that the IIRO was "complicit in killing Australians".

"Saudi charities in Southeast Asia have been the primary conduit of Wahabism and other intolerant interpretations of Islam into the region," Dr Abuza told The Australian yesterday.

"In Indonesia, the IIRO funded many projects of KOMPAK, a charity that at the very least JI penetrated.

"At the time of the (first) Bali bombing, four of the 13 branch officers were JI members."

The IIRO is an enormous Saudi charity with branch offices in more than 20 countries. It is funded by the Saudi Government and by donations from wealthy private Saudi citizens. Although it also provides genuine charity services, the IIRO is also a vehicle to spread extremist Wahabist interpretations of Islam around the globe.

The Saudi Government denies deliberately sponsoring terrorism through the IIRO, but many terror experts and some Western governments believe the Government is complicit in its funding of terror groups.

"I really cannot imagine that they do not know about this - it is a systemic problem," Dr Abuza said.

Speaking about the IIRO, US Under-Secretary for Terrorism Stuart Levey said: "It is particularly shameful when groups that hold themselves out as charitable or religious organisations defraud their donors and divert funds in support of violent terrorist groups."

There are at least two Saudi charities in Australia: the World Assembly of Muslim Youth and the Muslim World League.

Mr Khan said he registered the IIRO in NSW in 1989 at the request of the Saudi charity on the expectation that it would set up an office in Australia.

But he said the charity never followed up and so it was not active in this country.

Australian terror expert Clive Williams said the US decision to name and shame the IIRO in Indonesia and The Philippines may not achieve anything because it was almost impossible to control how the charity's funds were used.,20867,20054517-2702,00.html

Communist Goals (1963)
Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35

Current Communist Goals

Thursday, January 10, 1963

Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.

At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following "Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:

[From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen]

1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament of the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.

4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.

5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.

6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.

7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.

8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.

9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.

10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.

11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)

12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.

14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

18. Gain control of all student newspapers.

19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.

20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."

31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.

32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.

34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand.

39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.

41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use united force to solve economic, political or social problems.

43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.

44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.

45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction over nations and individuals alike.

Kidnapper Admits Role in Interrogation; Sheds Light on Syrian, Iranian Links

The IDF has released film from an interrogation of a Hezbollah member who took part in the kidnapping of two soldiers on the northern border. "My role was to stop the tank backup that was supposed to arrive to chase after the kidnappers," Hussin Ali Suleiman, 22, commander of the ant-tank unit of Hezbullah told the camera.

Suleiman was captured by IDF forces, and his interrogators released footage of the questioning on Monday. In the interrogation, Suleiman volunteered information which shed light on a range of topics linked to Hezbullah and Syria and Iran's link to activities in the area. He described his role in the kidnapping, but did not provide new information on the fate of the kidnapped soldiers.

During the interrogation Suleiman said he was not involved in the full kidnapping plot and did not know all of its details, but was aware of the general intentions. His role was to shoot anti-tank missiles on IDF tanks mobilized into the area following the kidnapping.

UPDATE 08/07 @ 17:39: The only video we can find is over at Ma'ariv (Hebrew only). We'll work on it but any help we can get would be appreciated.

UPDATE 08/07 @ 18:07: Sounds to us like the big news from this tape is Suleiman's admission that he and other Hezbollah terrorists received operational training in Iran in 2003, which Syria helped to facilitate:

Reuters reports Suleiman said: "We trained in Iran" and "We went from Beirut in civilian cars... to the airport in Damascus."
AP reports: "Suleiman told his interrogators he attended military maneuvers in Iran with 40 or 50 other Hezbollah guerrillas in 2003. He gave no details on the parts of the tape made public. He said the trainees drove from Beirut to the Syrian capital, Damascus, in Hezbollah cars and from there took a special flight to Iran without passing through passport control."
UPDATE 08/07 @ 19:07: Below is a rough translation of the relevant portion of the IDF video posted on Maariv -- if anyone wants to add to this, send us an email:

Q: When did you start in Hezbollah?
A: Around '98.
Q: You were 15 or 16?
A: Yes, 15 or 16. The course to be a soldier is about a month and a half.
Q: You were still in school or after school?
A: It was at night time, after evening prayers so it wouldn't be a problem with school. I learned classes about the Prophet and our beliefs and different educational things. In 2000, I joined the combat course.
Q: Where?
A: In the Bekaa Valley.
Q: Where?
A: Baalbek.

Q: How did you get to Tehran?
A: I went from Beirut in a car, in a Ranger Rover. They were Hezbollah cars. Cars of the military are of Hezbollah... not military but rather...
Q: How did you know they were of Hezbollah?
A: They are recognizable.
Q: How many people went?
A: 40 to 50.
Q: Together?
A: Together.
Q: From Beirut to where?
A: From Beirut to an airport in Damascus.

I read this on another site and it's very thought provoking. You may want to pass it on as well:

Do you marvel at the blind eye turned to evil by many “intellectuals” today? Does the creeping anti-Semitism that condemns Israel for defending itself against Hezbollah rocket attacks stun you? Are you baffled by the moral equivalency given to Israel and the blatant terrorist fanatics of Hezbollah?

Recently, I suggested in conversation that the world is recreating the precarious conditions of the 1930’s that led to the deaths of millions in the Second World War. Victor Davis Hanson, in National Review Online, has explored that very premise in a lengthy and illuminating article.

Some excerpts:

When I used to read about the 1930s — the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, the rise of fascism in Italy, Spain, and Germany, the appeasement in France and Britain, the murderous duplicity of the Soviet Union, and the racist Japanese murdering in China — I never could quite figure out why, during those bleak years, Western Europeans and those in the United States did not speak out and condemn the growing madness, if only to defend the millennia-long promise of Western liberalism.

Our present generation, too, is on the brink of moral insanity. That has never been more evident than in the last four weeks, as the West has proven utterly unable to distinguish between an attacked democracy that seeks to strike back at terrorist combatants, and terrorist aggressors who seek to kill civilians.

These past few days, the inability of millions of Westerners here and in Europe, to condemn fascist terrorists who start wars, spread racial hatred, and despise Western democracies is the real story, not the “quarter-ton” Israeli bombs that inadvertently hit civilians in Lebanon who live among rocket launchers that send missiles into Israeli cities and suburbs.

The growing turbulence of the 1930’s went largely unchallenged by those in power in Europe who instead sought to appease, smooth over, and get along with evil instead of condemning or combating it. As a result, roughly fifty million people died in the vast war that followed, and millions more would suffer for decades under the scourge of Communism that rose from the destruction.

The evil history of man is poised to repeat itself. Who will stand to prevent it?

Bekka Valley, is where all of Saddam's WMD was to have gone and here is proof that the worst of the terrorists have control of it. (your article confirms what is in the valley)

Mike Savage had an interesting opinion, he said, that the Jewish Center in Seattle has been covered up, as if the Gov and the news sites admitted that terror had happened in Seattle and in other states, then they would have to admit that there was a threat of a dirty bomb or larger.

Bin Laden's man " Mohamed the American" in Silicon Valley

Bin Laden's man in Silicon Valley
"Mohamed the American' orchestrated terrorist acts while living a quiet suburban
life in Santa Clara
Lance Williams, Erin McCormick, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writers
Friday, September 21, 2001

He was the California connection to Osama bin Laden's fearsome terrorist
organization -- an architect of horrific acts of violence against his adopted
country, even as he lived a quiet suburban lifestyle in Silicon Valley.

For much of a decade he commuted from the West Coast to the terrorist camps of
Afghanistan and Sudan, where he trained bin Laden's men in guerrilla military
tactics, surveillance and explosives.

The unsuspecting Americans who met him in his duplex in Santa Clara knew him as
Ali A. Mohamed, a cordial, under-employed Egyptian immigrant with an Army
background, a U.S.-born wife and frequent business abroad.

But to his fellow terrorists, he was Abu Mohamed ali Amriki -- "Mohamed the
American" -- a hard-driving military taskmaster who trained bin Laden's own
personal security cadre and was a top aide and confidant of the shadowy
terrorist kingpin himself.

Until his 1998 arrest for plotting the terror bombing of two U.S. embassies in
East Africa, Mohamed "was the California connection, period," for bin Laden,
said lawyer Sam A. Schmidt, who defended another accused terrorist in the
embassy bombing trial this year.

Now in prison and presumed to be a government informant, Mohamed could be a key
connection for U.S. investigators probing bin Laden's links to the suicide
hijackers who flew jetliners into the World Trade Center and Pentagon last week,
some experts say.

In remarks to a judge last year when he pleaded guilty to terrorism charges,
Mohamed admitted a long list of such crimes: training guerrillas who attacked
U.S. soldiers in Somalia in 1993; arranging a summit conference of anti-U.S.
terrorist organizations in Sudan in 1994; plotting the suicide bombings of
American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed more than 200 people and
injured thousands.

Other suspected activities during his California days include raising money for
the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, implicated in the 1981 assassination of Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat, and smuggling sleeper agents for bin Laden into the
United States from Canada.

For the U.S. government, Mohamed is important today because he has extraordinary
insights into the inner workings of bin Laden's al Qaeda organization, says
Yonah Alexander, director of the Potomac Institute's Center for Terrorism
Studies in Washington, D.C., who has researched Mohamed's life. He may even have
had personal contacts with some of the hijackers responsible for last week's

"In his previous life, perhaps he trained some of these people," Alexander said.
"Clearly (the government) has interrogated him, and we assume they are doing it
now, because he is a very important source."

Mohamed's story also is important because it shows how easily even a top- level
terrorist can operate unmolested and undetected from the very heart of the
United States.

Terrorist groups have "woven themselves into the fabric of America," said Harvey
Kushner, an international security expert and professor at Long Island
University. "That is why this is going to be a long, protracted war (against
terrorism). The enemy is not outside, it's within us."

The details of Mohamed's two lives were obtained from court records generated
during two major terrorism trials, from defense lawyers and security experts who
have investigated his background and from people who knew him in California.

By these accounts, Mohamed, 49, is a well-educated Egyptian national, fluent in
English, who graduated from both the University of Alexandria and a Cairo
military academy. In about 1971, he joined the Egyptian army, rising to the rank
of major.

As he told a federal judge in New York last year, his links to Middle Eastern
terrorist groups go back 20 years: In 1981, he joined the Egyptian Islamic
Jihad, a group of radical Muslim fundamentalists opposed to the Egyptian
government's ties to the United States and Israel that included members of the
Egyptian military.

That same year Mohamed first visited the United States, graduating from a
special program for foreign officers at the U.S. Army Special Forces school at
Fort Bragg, N.C., according to a report by Steven Emerson, an author and
terrorism expert.

Mohamed left the Egyptian army about three years after Sadat's death, then
worked for a time as security adviser for EgyptAir, the national airline, said
attorney David Ruhnke, who researched Mohamed's history for the embassy bombing

Shortly after that, the terrorist operative returned to the United States and
established himself in the Bay Area after romancing an American divorcee whom he
met on a transatlantic flight in 1985.

Mohamed was traveling from Egypt to New York, he said, while the divorcee, a
medical technician from Santa Clara, was returning to the West Coast after a
vacation in Greece, according to two longtime acquaintances who asked not to be
named because of safety concerns.

Within a few days of arriving in the United States, Mohamed phoned the divorcee
and then turned up in the Bay Area, according to the acquaintances. After a
six-week courtship, they were married in Reno.

Mohamed's wife seemed genuinely devoted to her husband, but the acquaintances
suspected that, for him, it may have been "a marriage of convenience," as one
put it -- a way to obtain a "green card" and an American home.

Mohammed moved into his new wife's Santa Clara duplex. People who met him there
said he was cordial, well-spoken and physically fit; he described himself as a
former Egyptian army officer who hoped to do intelligence work for the United

But that didn't pan out, and after a year of unemployment, he enlisted in the
U.S. Army.

While his wife remained in California, Mohamed became a sergeant and was again
stationed at Fort Bragg's Special Warfare Center, where he trained officers in
Middle Eastern culture and geography. He also became a U.S. citizen, his
associates said.

But even while an American soldier, court records show, Mohamed worked on behalf
of militant Islamic groups.

In the late 1980s, he turned up in a Brooklyn, N.Y., refugee center for people
displaced by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, according to evidence in the
1995 trial of El Sayyid Nosair, an Egyptian terrorist convicted of plotting to
bomb the U.N. headquarters in New York.

In Brooklyn, Mohamed gave combat training to Muslim recruits bound for
Afghanistan to fight the Soviet invasion, said defense lawyer Roger Stavis.
Nosair was among the guerrilla fighters Mohamed trained, he said.

Although the United States was then providing training and money to the
anti-Soviet rebels, the government said Mohamed's activities were unauthorized.

Mohamed was discharged from the army in 1989. He returned to Santa Clara, where
he served for a time in the Army Reserve and tried but failed to get a job as an
FBI interpreter, according to lawyers familiar with his background.

He worked as a security guard at the old Sylvania plant in Mountain View,
acquaintances said, and ran a computer consulting firm out of his home.

Mohamed often complained that he couldn't find a good job and, after a time,
according to his acquaintances, he began spending months abroad, saying he had
found work in Egypt. For long periods he was out of touch.

His wife "would say he's in the desert, and he can't call me," one acquaintance

For some of his overseas jobs, Mohamed seemed not to be paid in money. Instead,
"he'd bring back 24-karat gold bracelets," the acquaintance recalled.

And at one point in the early 1990s, Mohamed's wife told one of the
acquaintances that her husband was in Afghanistan, training people for a man
named bin Laden. At the time the name was virtually unknown in this country, and
it seemed to mean nothing to the wife.

"Maybe I am dumb, but I did not know who this guy was, bin Laden," this person
said. "I just didn't know."

Mohamed's 1980s work with the Egyptian Islamic Jihad eventually drew him to bid
Laden, the multimillionaire son of a Saudi construction magnate.

Bin Laden, who had helped finance and train the Islamic guerrillas who finally
expelled the Soviet invaders from Afghanistan in 1989, became increasingly
anti-American after the United States defeated Iraq in the 1991 Persian Gulf
War, and he began advocating a holy war to drive America from the Middle East.

He founded al Qaeda ("the base"), the terrorist organization implicated in a
long list of deadly anti-American attacks.

"I was involved in the Islamic Jihad organization, and the Islamic Jihad
organization had a very close link to al Qaeda, the organization for bin Laden,
" Mohamed told the New York judge. "And the objective of all this, just to
attack any Western target in the Middle East, to force the government of the
Western countries just to pull out from the Middle East."

L'Houssaine Kherchtou, a onetime bin Laden guerrilla who turned U.S. government
witness in the embassy bombing trial, said he had met Mohamed -- he called him
"Amriki" -- in 1991 at a camp near Peshawar, Pakistan.

Mohamed, he said, was a high-ranking member of al Qaeda, a "very, very strict
and not gentle" taskmaster who trained cadre members in how to reconnoiter
targets for terror bombings.

Mohamed told the judge that in 1992 he had been in Afghanistan, providing
"military and basic explosives training" to bin Laden's terrorists. The
curriculum also included intelligence trade craft: "I taught my trainees how to
create cell structures that could be used for operations," he said.

There were other tasks as well. In 1991, Mohamed said, he helped relocate bin
Laden from Afghanistan to the African nation of Sudan, where the
multimillionaire set up another network of paramilitary camps.

In about 1992, Mohamed said, he helped set up an al Qaeda cell in Nairobi,
Kenya, along with a car business to earn money and a refugee-assistance charity
that provided fake IDs for the terrorist gang.

In 1993, Mohamed said, bin Laden told him to scout prospective bombing targets
in Nairobi, as bin Laden wanted a strike to retaliate for that year's U.S.
intervention in Somalia.

Mohamed said he had scouted the French Embassy, the U.S. AID office and the U.S.
Embassy. He took photos and maps to Khartoum for a meeting with the terrorist

"Bin Laden looked at the picture of the American Embassy and pointed to where a
truck could go as a suicide bomber," Mohamed told the court.

The Santa Clara resident also said he had arranged security for a conference in
which bin Laden's al Qaeda met with Imad Mughniyeh, security chief for
Hezbollah, the Iran-sponsored organization reputedly responsible for attacks
that included the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Lebanon that killed

"Hezbollah provided explosives training for al Qaeda and (Egyptian Islamic)
Jihad," he said. "Iran supplied Egyptian Jihad with weapons."

In 1994, while he was at the al Qaeda cell in Nairobi, Mohamed came under FBI
suspicion in connection with a probe of Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, a blind
Islamic cleric arrested and ultimately convicted for masterminding the 1993
bombing of the World Trade Center, which killed six and injured 1,000.

At the FBI's request, Mohamed said, he flew to the United States to be
interrogated. Mohamed lied to the FBI, claiming no links to terror, admitting
only that he had trained Islamic guerrillas to fight the Russians in

After that, Mohamed said, al Qaeda told him not to return to Nairobi. From his
home in Santa Clara, he began tracking the Rahman case for bin Laden, relaying
what he could learn about the progress of the FBI probe. He also made telephone
calls from his home in California to bin Laden associates in Nairobi,
according to court testimony.

While back in California, Mohamed said, he did other tasks for bin Laden. Twice,
he said, he aided the terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, a co-founder of the Egyptian
Islamic Jihad, by then an aide to bin Laden and later a suspect in the embassy
bombings, when he visited America to raise money.

Alexander, the Potomac Institute's terrorism expert, said intelligence sources
believed Mohamed also had helped smuggle bin Laden agents into the United States
via Canada.

Around 1997, Mohamed's acquaintances said, he and his wife moved to Sacramento,
where he worked for a video distribution company.

On Aug. 7, 1998, terrorist bombs exploded at U.S. embassies in Nairobi and in
Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. Mohamed was again an FBI suspect. Court records show
that 10 agents searched his Sacramento apartment, downloading the entire
contents of Mohamed's two computers and photographing documents in English and
Arabic found inside.

Among the documents were terrorist training manuals, describing surveillance and
assassination techniques, and instructions on how to plant explosives to blow up

When he pleaded guilty, Mohamed said that after the embassy bombings, he had
planned to leave the United States and return to Afghanistan to meet with bin
Laden. Before he could get away, he was subpoenaed to testify before a U.S.
grand jury in New York.

"I testified, told some lies and was arrested," he said.

Mohamed was indicted along with bin Laden and 22 other alleged terrorists. Only
six were brought to trial. In October 2000, Mohamed, who was facing the death
penalty if convicted, pleaded guilty to five conspiracy charges, including
plotting to kill U.S. soldiers in Somalia and Saudi Arabia, plotting to murder
U.S. ambassadors and other embassy officials and plotting to kill "United States
civilians anywhere in the world," as another prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald,
summarized the charges.

But he has never been sentenced, and defense lawyers and security experts
believe he had begun giving evidence about bin Laden to the government in hopes
of winning his release from prison.

Acquaintances said Mohamed's wife, who declined to talk to The Chronicle, had
expressed surprise after his arrest, but she remained loyal, corresponding with
him and visiting him in prison.

The acquaintances said they were shocked and troubled at how easily the
terrorist they knew as Ali Mohamed had duped them.

"It boggles the mind that anyone who lived this close here could possibly have
anything to do with something this horrible," said one. "It makes you wonder
about anyone else we were so taken in by."

Said the other: "I wonder sometimes, when he saw how we lived, if he wasn't
sorry. Or can they just live two lives?"

If one listens to talk radio in the west, you will hear pure hate of America and all jews.

Even on the best of the conserative shows, the hate caller will get on the air and spew the hate.

At my age, WW2 is still clearly a part of my memory and as I see what is happening today, there is little difference.

If you can listen to radio on the computer or live in the west, you will hear it pure and uncut for hours, from 1 am, at:

It is 810 on the AM dial, the Ray Talifero program, you could still get last nights program, until he comes on again.

No, my nerves do not want me listening to it, but i have in the past.

I do listen to Dr. Bill Wattenberg and John Rothman from that station, Dr. Bill calls it like he sees it. John is a democrat, but does have a good grasp on history and knows Israel.

I do hope you will continue to read this thread, and continue posting.

It does show how much was going on before 9-11.

I never know when my copy and paste, will go to a blob, that is why I cannot post the Promed emails, unless I use the <P.

I ran bin Ladin in that google group, there are about 800 posts, and I gave out before I checked them.

My googles are finding far more than I can post........LOL, but like Donna's Pink Bunny, I keep trying.

Media bias----no, no, no. Who would ever believe that.

WP Reporter: Israelis Left Rockets Intact, Endangering Civilians to Help War PR
Thanks to the readers that brought this to our attention. Earlier today, Thomas Ricks, Pentagon reporter for The Washington Post and author of the new book "Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq" was interviewed on CNN by Howard Kurtz. According to the official CNN transcript, the following jaw-dropping conversation took place:

KURTZ: All right, Matthew Chance, stand by, thank you for that report. We will come back to you.

And joining us now here Washington Anne Compton who covers the White House for ABC News, and Thomas Ricks, Pentagon reporter for "The Washington Post" and author of the new book "Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq."

Tom Ricks, you've covered a number of military conflicts, including Iraq, as I just mentioned. Is civilian casualties increasingly going to be a major media issue? In conflicts where you don't have two standing armies shooting at each other?

THOMAS RICKS, REPORTER, "THE WASHINGTON POST": I think it will be. But I think civilian casualties are also part of the battlefield play for both sides here. One of the things that is going on, according to some military analysts, is that Israel purposely has left pockets of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon, because as long as they're being rocketed, they can continue to have a sort of moral equivalency in their operations in Lebanon.

KURTZ: Hold on, you're suggesting that Israel has deliberately allowed Hezbollah to retain some of it's fire power, essentially for PR purposes, because having Israeli civilians killed helps them in the public relations war here?

RICKS: Yes, that's what military analysts have told me.

KURTZ: That's an extraordinary testament to the notion that having people on your own side killed actually works to your benefit in that nobody wants to see your own citizens killed but it works to your benefit in terms of the battle of perceptions here.

RICKS: Exactly. It helps you with the moral high ground problem, because you know your operations in Lebanon are going to be killing civilians as well.

KURTZ: Tom Ricks, "The New York Times" reported the other day, quote, "Israel is now fighting to win the battle of perceptions," which to me says the battle of headlines. And, in fact, an Israeli cabinet minister was quoted, not by name, as saying, "That the narrative at the end, is part of the problem." I'm starting to hear echoes of Iraq.

RICKS: Echoes of Iraq, yes. But also the Israelis are very sophisticated in their handling of the media. They consider it part of the battlefield, officially. The word "narrative" always comes up with conversations with Israeli national security officials. They consider shaping the narrative, the battle for the narrative, to be key as part of any war fighting. So they see the media as part of the battlefield. And, in fact, there's some belief from our reporters that they have occasionally targeted the media.

Thanks for your kind words. I know what you mean about your nerves. It's the same with me. I can almost feel my blood literally boiling sometimes when I get upset about the insanity going on today.

History is supposed to repeat itself. I hope so. I really do think we'll have to nuke the Middle East into submission in order to get rid of terrorism. I just hope we have the good sense to do it soon, after the dog and pony show of appeasement gets us absolutely nowhere and before they annihilate us first!

Yes, history does repeat itself.

I have read that there were protests in New York City, that the protestors were in nazi uniforms, this was 10,000 anti war people, about 1938 to 1940 era.

One of these days I will have to google it.

The left actually thinks that the jihad side of this war is in the right and we are in the wrong.

If you are so inclined, listen to the last John Rothman show, Friday was very good, I did not stick with him for all of Saturday night. (at

I will be posting incidents that are possible terror acts, as I can and did you read the Spanish fires above, it reads about like the California fires that burned about 3 years ago.

Many of the California fires were set, I followed the Calif. Hiway Patrol site, as they chased a white van, with 2 men, who stopped every 3 or 4 miles at an overpass and set another fire.

Nuclear, yes, it is in the future.

We care too much and they care not at all for the women and children who will be damaged by it, after all it is the holy jihad.

They will lie and lie some more.

The news reporters are looking bad, now that the false photos at Reuters has been exposed.

I always think of the Free Republic threads at the start of the Iraq war.

I was reading one night, and a half dozen Freepers were monitoring the different TV news and all posting the news as it happened. { I do not have a TV}.

One Freeper, asked if that was a missile launcher, getting ready to fire at the American tanks?

Before they could decide, what new weapon they were seeing in the hotel, firing at our troops, it was shot out of service.

It turned out to be a reporter, who was filming the attack on the Americans, fool was standing between the terrorists who were firing, the weapon was his camera lens......and he died.

But what we heard was:

"The Americans killed an American reporter, by firing into the hotel"..

Freepers are good at painting good word pictures and I sometimes forget that I was not watching it, as I read that thread.

I am still surprised, to hear a reporter interviewed and have the interview sound like he is repeating the 1963 communist manifesto, as his opinion.

Interesting post that you found, thanks.

Oil Mafia and Passdaran’s Billion-Dollar Contracts/Hamid Ahadi

Hamid Ahadi

03 Jul 2006

Following the signing of an agreement for $7 billion between Iran’s Oil Ministry and the Khatam al-Anbiya Reconstruction Organization belonging to the elite Passdaran Revolutionary Guards Corps, informed sources have expressed their concerns that the events that had in the past followed the Passdaran’s intrusion into business activities at the expense of murders, imprisonment of investors, suspension of investments, and the flee of managers would be repeated again, and there would be no body to contain the destructive consequences of the trend.

The disclosure of the events that led to this large contract, and the purchase of shares of the Oriental Oil Kish, one of Iran’s largest private oil companies with controversial management, were the reasons for the negative publicity of Iran’s hardline media against the company and the hostility of the Passdaran to the management of this oil enterprise. Fars news agency, which is under the influence of Iran’s hardliners, quoted ‘an informed source’ and revealed that the value of Oriental Oil Kish was about $90 million, and that ‘talks for a final price were underway.”

Oil Kish was created about four years ago through a number of private investors and the express permission from senior officials of the Islamic regime. The mission of the company was to develop oil and gas resources over fields that Iran shares with some of its regional neighbors. Soon, the company won on-shore and off-shore contracts for its mission. This included Paydar fields shared with Iraq, Foroozan offshore fields shared with Saudi Arabia, and Salman and Hengam fields shared with Qatar. But perhaps the biggest victory for the company came when it acquired permission to work with the American giant Halliburton.

Even at that time some had informed the company that they would not be able to cooperate with it without the participation of individuals connected to the military. Oil Kish rejected those warnings. And that is when the ‘revelations’ about the company began to appear in the pro-government media such as Keyhan newspaper and Baztab news website which has strong links to the economic branches of the Passdaran. The first attacks were for the cooperation that the company was pursuing with Halliburton, which forced Oil Kish to cancel. But the pressures continued leading to the arrest of Sirus Nassseri, the vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of the oil company, who was also a member of Iran’s negotiating team with the international community over the nuclear issue. This forced the company to suspend its activities altogether.

At the same time, Oil Kish began to have a formidable rival every time it bid for a contract from no other than Passdaran Corps’ Khatam al-Anbiya Reconstruction Organization. But the Khatam company mostly lost the competition due its lack of expertise.

When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president last year and announced his policy of fighting the oil mafia, the ground-work for arresting the mangers of Oil Kish gained momentum. In one of their first acts, supporters of president Ahmadinejad tried to install a Passdaran commander as the minister of oil, which was rejected by the Majlis (Iran’s Parliament). Vaziri Hannaneh, the then minister of oil displayed his decision not to participate in the fake scandals under the name of ‘oil mafia’ and thus did not remove the valuable managers and personnel of the oil industry. This is when the battle went underwater, but continued even more fiercely, but eventually reached a compromise.

Apparently, with that agreement, the managers of Oriental Oil Kish company, including Nasseri, were acquitted while the Passdaran Revolutionary Guards Corps were the given the oil contracts, while it would purchase all the shares of Oriental, including its contracts. This happened last week when Rahim Safavi, the supreme commander of the Passdaran signed the multi billion dollar contract with Khatam al-Anbiya.
It is reported that Passdaran’s commercial organization which is now the largest business and economic trust in the country, especially in the oil sector, had as its goal to achieve this status even from the days of the presidency of Mohammad Khatami in the late 90s. In those days, however, few thought it would succeed in its goal. But as events have turned out, the recent $7 billion contract was signed without the normal bidding process and outside any controls.

A veteran oil industry specialist said of the recent contract that Khatam al-Anbiya is not going to implement anything and only acts as a primarily contractor who will subcontract the actual work to others, mostly foreign experts, thus reaping large profits as a middle-man. What is worrisome, he said is that this new arrangement may again produce the same kind of criminal activities that took place when the military institution got involved in business deals in the past.

This is why two Majlis deputies have already asked cabinet ministers to appear before the legislature and respond to the questions about contracting the oil deal to the Passdaran and what is the role of the private sector in the arrangement.

Without active state support for terrorism on the part of Iran, Syria, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya, Russia, Pakistan, N. Korea, and China, terrorism would devolve into local gang warfare and criminal activity with some tenacles reaching into Europe, America, and elsewhere. It would not be the threat to our very existence that it now is. From the start we should have held states responsible for their terrorist proxies. States are something we can fight, whereas terrorist groups are amorphous entities difficult to identify and fight.

Soheil Asefi

23 Jul 2006

The fire in the Middle East is approaching the unpredictable point by the day. What are the long term goals of Israel and the United States in this process? Will this crisis pull Iran into it as well? Dr Dawood Hermidas Bavand is an analyst and university professor on international affairs spoke with Rooz about the US plans for this event, and how Hezbollah was ambushed in to it. Read on for his views.

Rooz (R ): What are the goals of the escalating crises in the Middle East?
Dawood Hermidas Bavand (DHB): Two goals may be mentioned. At one time counting on their hardware they had a plan to democratize the region etc which ran into problems. In other words, after getting bogged down in Afghanistan and Iraq, and also an unfavorable public opinion, the US could not pursue this program. So now they are trying the same goal through a different strategy, logic and motivations.

R: There is evidence that the kidnapping of the Israeli soldier by Hamas and Hezbollah are only the beginnings of a detailed scenario for the region.
DHE: Yes. It is very clear recent events are not taking place simply because of the two Israeli soldiers.

R: So what is the goal?
DHE: The goal is to cripple Hezbollah in Lebanon or make it inoperative. But if the conflict extends to Syria, it will certainly not stop there because governments that support Syria will get into the conflict, expanding the clash. At that point, the US would intervene. And based on formulated plans, the US would act on different premises.

R: What is Israel’s long-term strategy in this?
DHE: Foremost it is to destroy all opposition levers around itself. This means the destruction of any means that exist on its borders that can harm it.

R: With the continuation of the current trends, is there likelihood for a regional war?
DHE: For those who are blamed for some of these events, such as Syria, such a possibility exists very seriously militarily and also from a distance. Today the US is following its goal of democratization differently, without provoking a reaction from its population. In short, since the US could not achieve its goals using traditional instruments, that goal will be pursued through the creation of a crisis, which appears to be through Israel and its neighbors. Regarding the other countries in the region, which have been identified in the past, the US will probably use a different approach [through the military]. That will depend on how the attack on Syria progresses. If Syria is militarily attacked, then other countries in the region will most likely be militarily attacked as well.

R: It is said that Damascus, and more than that Tehran, has been the principal supporters of Hezbollah. How does this play into all of this?
DHE: This is just an excuse. Hezbollah is not the real issue. There is a wider plan in the making. Wider than the Bekka valley and Hezbollah. If these events are, as the Prime Minister of Israel has said, to eradicate the roots of the crisis in the region, it is clear that the operations will not be limited in scope. And no matter how passive Syria plays it, eventually it will be dragged into the conflict because of its support for Hezbollah. And once Syria is pulled in, inevitably other countries too will be attacked.

R: Is this crisis specifically threatening Iran?
DHE: If it gets to Syria, it will get to Iran as well.

R: So can one say that Hezbollah has got into this situation through the careful planning of its opponent, i.e. the neocons of the US?
DHE: Perhaps it has been trapped. They (the Americans) do create traps and then follow up with their long term interests.

R: How do you think Iran’s policy towards Israel (annihilating it from the map of the world, the Holocaust, etc) has impacted the position of Israel and the US towards Iran?
DHE: You see we are now past the phase of talk and theories. The Holocaust etc are not the issues any longer. They believe that the Islamic Republic is a potential danger to them and so they use every occasion to its utmost. When they accept the consequences of attacking innocent people, it is clear that intend to pursue their plans on a larger scale.

R: Which means an attack on Iran?
DHE: They will not enter ground forces into Iran. With their advanced weapons, they will hit almost all the strategic and economic facilities. A strike from a long distance.

R: So do then they will implement their regime change plans?
DHE: Of course. They tried it one way, it did not work. Now they are pursuing their goals on the pretext of destroying the supporters of terrorism. Syria will most likely see changes, as will others. It all depends on the kind of strikes they utilize. They certainly do have a plan for regime change, but whether it will take place or not depends on how things develop.

R: Many observers believe that George Bush intends to settle the Iranian issue before the end of his term?
DHE: Yes, it appears so. As I said earlier, this issue is not related to simply two soldier prisoners. This was a trap. Especially as the Americans have supported Israel’s actions to be in self defense, which is really laying the groundwork for their own intervention and the advancement of their plans.

A sample of the Iranian news on Human Rights:

Hunger strike by Iranian asylum seeker in The Hague enters critical phase/Save the life of a refugee in The Netherlands!

The Hague, August 7th 2006 - Negotiations between the Immigration and Naturalization Department (IND) of the Dutch Ministry of Justice and the Iranian asylum seeker Ali Anoushei, have entered a decisive, critical phase. Anoushei has been on hunger strike near the Dutch Parliament building for 57 days. During talks 4 days ago, the IND offered him a review of his recently rejected asylum request, promising his case the utmost in care and consideration.

The security and intelligence forces of the tyrannical and despotic government of the Islamic Republic placed the naked body of my son in a estate car in a very inappropriate conditions and threatened us that they would return Akbar’s body to Tehran, would bury him secretly and would not inform us of his burial location, if we were to hold a funeral procession or to cause any disturbance.

Iran: Death of Jailed Student Dissident

The United States condemns the Iranian government's severe repression of dissidents, and its continued crackdown on civil society and those fighting for personal freedom in Iran. The regime's actions resulted in the recent death of imprisoned Iranian student activist Akbar Mohammadi. Mr. Mohammadi died on July 30, reportedly as a result of a prolonged hunger strike, still in the notorious Evin Prison where he has been held for his role in pro-democracy student demonstrations in July 1999. Unfortunately, Mr. Mohammadi's detention was notan isolated case.

Another Prisoner of Conscience Died in Prison in Iran

We are writing to inform you that yet another innocent human being has died in Iran under the Islamic Republic╝s watch. His crime was to practice his right to assemble, as stated in the Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Reza Pahlavi's message on Mohammadi's murder

Seven long and terrible years of torture, abuse and maltreatment, tragically ended yesterday for our courageous compatriot, Akbar Mohammadi, with his murder at the hands of his jailers, who carried out the execution order issued by the security apparatus of the criminal clerical regime.

A letter to The conference of the so-called 5+1 / Fred Saberi

Last night, Akbar Mohammadi, a 36 year-old pro-democracy activist who was on a hunger strike to protest his own detention and call for the release of all political prisoners, died in the Evin Prison in Tehran. Mohammadi, who had spent several years in prison, had been arrested along with thousands of other students (including his brother Manocheher Mohammad) following the 1999 students protest triggered by the vigilantes attack on a peaceful campus rally in support of freedom of the press.

Alarm to all human rights organisations !/Yesterday Ahamd Batebi arrested.!

Ahmad Batebi in connection with peaceful student demonstrations in July 1999,yesterday the 29 of July was violently arrested in his home and taken a way to an unknown area. They searched his home and took away his private documents which put’s Mr Batebi´s life in even greater danger. Last year, after several years of external struggle by politicians outside the country and human rights organisation, Mr Batebi, after having served half of his prison punishment was awarded one year’s conditional furlough which was now broken by this illegal and inhuman arrest.

the UN's new Human Rights Council and Saeed Mortazavi

We, the undersigned, who are fighting for achieving democracy in our country, would like to have your attention for the following serious matter: Recently, you accepted Mr. Saeed Mortazavi (a government prosecutor widely known to have sanctioned the torture and the execution of political prisoners)as a part of Iranian delegation to the UN's new Human Rights Council. Saeed Mortazavi is responsible for the custody and interrogation of many prominent Iranian political prisoners.Among them the canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi of Montreal, who died while in prison in Iran, of wounds suffered at the hands of her jailers.

Varjavand: Dangerous Decisions Loom Over Iran/Soheil Asefi

As the G8 summit progresses, Rooz Online talked with Iranian international affairs expert Parviz Varjavand. He believes that the streamlining of the views and positions of China and Russia with those of the US would lead to harsher decisions over Iran regarding its nuclear stand off at the meeting. In view of the new Middle East crises and Tehran’s diplomatic and domestic postures, decisions at the summit could be very threatening to the national security of Iran, he added. Read on for excerpts of the interview.

Last Day of Hunger Strike in London

It was the last day of the hunger strike in London, which took place in solidarity with Iran's prisoners of conscience. Those who took part in the hunger strike had two common denominators. They were Iranians and they wanted to see the prisoners of conscience in Iran set free.Whether they were republicans, monarchists, Left or Right, they respected each other for the hardship they put themselves through to publicise Iran's political prisoners of conscience.

Hunger Strike for Human Rights in Iran

The human rights situation in Iran continues to deteriorate. Petitions and protests to end the abuses have gone unanswered. During the past year, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government has sought to monopolize power in Iran by silencing and suffocating all independent and dissenting voices. The suppression of demonstrators in Azerbaijan, Khuzestan, and Kurdistan, the silencing of labor, women, and student movements and the vicious attacks on demonstrators throughout the past year, are all evidence of the ongoing and abhorrent human rights violations by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Majlis speaker calls on youth to maintain their high morale
Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA

Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel said here Monday that the self-sacrificing spirit of the Lebanese combatants has thwarted Israel's savage attacks.

Addressing a gathering of university students, he said members of University Jihad should maintain their jihad-oriented spirit.

High morale of the Iranian people led to triumph of the Islamic Revolution and bloods of thousands of people helped them restore spirit of jihad in the country, he said.

This is such an jihad-oriented spirit of Muslim youths that has defeated Israel's acts of savagery being perpetrated under support of the US and the West, he said.

"We are able to overcome all difficulties in the world through the jihad-oriented spirit and reliance on Almighty God," he said.

It is possible to make good on all backwardness of the past thorough commitment and hard work, he underlined.

New ME in the offing despite US demand: Velayati
Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA

An advisor of the Supreme Leader, Ali-Akbar Velayati, said here Monday that a new Middle East would undoubtedly be created despite US demands.

Velayati's remarks came as he addressed an international conference which opened here Monday on the regional and international repercussions of the Zionist regime's continuing offensive in Lebanon.

"Regional states have long known that they can overcome the paper tiger -- the Zionist regime -- which superpowers have created." He compared measures taken by Western states in the Balkans war and measures now being undertaken in the war in Lebanon, saying the emphasis is on wasting time and letting the greatest number of Muslims be massacred."
Pointing to the massacre of 200,000 Bosnians and the silence of the West during the Balkans war, he added that "the same events are being repeated in Lebanon."
The United Nations Security Council is mandated to preserve international peace and security, he said, and regretted that the "US has prevented establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon while Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice) in her regional tour makes it clear that a new Middle East would have to be based on US demands." He said the US-France draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon has been changed under US pressure, and added that the change is intended to meet the Zionist regime's interests.

"If the Zionist regime continues its attacks on Lebanon, it will sustain more damage. This is while the Lebanese Hezbollah will continue to resist like a mountain.

"The United States and West intend to materialize parts of UN Security Council Resolution 1559 that they could not implement. They intend to materialize parts of their new Middle East plan in Lebanon and Palestine.

"The Islamic world and Lebanon will not yield to their sinister designs," Velayati stressed.

Mottaki's message on Lebanon submitted to Russian counterpart
Moscow, Aug 7, IRNA

Iran's Ambassador to Russia Gholam-Reza Ansari here Monday submitted a message of the Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the Zionist regime's aggression on Lebanon.

In a meeting with Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Andre enisov, Ansari outlined Iran's stance on the ongoing developments in the region and called for establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

He expressed his regret over the great human and financial loss inflicted to the Lebanese people after 26 days of savage attacks by the Zionist regime.

"Any possible resolution will not be acceptable if it does not establish a reasonable balance and refuses to take into account the rights of the Lebanese people and their resistance.

"The United States, along with certain other countries, intend to issue a one-sided resolution in favor of the Zionist regime calling for a ceasefire, exchange of prisoners, settlement of international forrces and even putting limitation on military aid.

"Those issues will be undoubtedly the base for future disputes and will not end in sustainable peace," Ansari said.

Denisov, for his part, said that as of now establishment of a ceasefire is the most important issue and that Russia has made great efforts to include the issue in the draft resolution.

Russia would continue its efforts to create greater balance in the resolution so the Lebanese government and nation would accept it, he added.

He also urged all influential countries in the region to immediately end the massacre in Lebanon.

Arab League foreign ministers hold emergency meeting on Lebanon
Beirut, Aug 7, IRNA

Lebanon-Arab League-Emergency Meeting
The foreign ministers of the League of Arab States held an emergency meeting in Beirut on Monday to voice solidarity with Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora appealed to fellow Arab states to help stop Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

according to IRNA, Siniora burst into tears while delivering his speech to the audience and reading a report on death of more civilians at the Lebanese village of Houla.

Meanwhile, Arab leaders are considering holding an emergency summit on Lebanon in Saudi Arabia later this week.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal was expected to make the call during the current emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Beirut Monday.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa was quoted by Lebanese newspaper As-Safir as saying that there was agreement in principle among Arab countries to hold a summit.

Moussa, who arrived in Beirut Sunday, added that chances for a summit would become clearer after the meeting of Arab foreign ministers.

Moussa, following a meeting with President Emile Lahoud Monday, said the ministers would also consider whether those Arab countries having diplomatic relations with Israel must summon their ambassadors.

"This has become a widespread demand," he said.

The Arab foreign ministers' meeting comes as senior Lebanese officials have objected to the context of a draft resolution the US and France have drawn up for the UN Security Council.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said upon his arrival in Beirut on Sunday that the Franco-US draft resolution is a recipe for further aggression on Lebanon.

He said that the resolution should call for withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and Shebaa Valley.

"Otherwise, ceasefire would be meaningless, because, the Lebanese defense force should fight occupation."

I think I am going to be sick.

Local Agenda 21
The U.N. Plan for Your Community

By Berit Kjos - 1998
"...current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class - involving high meat intake use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work-place air-conditioning, and suburban housing - are not sustainable. A shift is necessary. which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations..." [1] Maurice Strong , opening speech at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development

Agenda 21, the UN blueprint for global transformation, sounds good to many well meaning people. Drafted for the purpose of creating "sustainable societies", it has been welcomed by nations around the world. Political, cultural, and media leaders have embraced its alluring visions of social justice and a healthy planet. They hide the lies behind its doomsday scenarios and fraudulent science. Relatively few consider the contrary facts and colossal costs.

After all, what could be wrong with preserving resources for the next generation? Why not limit consumption and reduce energy use? Why not abolish poverty and establish a global welfare system to train parents, monitor intolerance, and meet all our needs? Why not save the planet by trading cars for bikes, an open market for "self-sustaining communities," and single dwellings for dense "human settlements" (located on transit lines) where everyone would dialogue, share common ground, and be equal?

The answer is simple. Marxist economics has never worked. Socialism produces poverty, not prosperity. Collectivism creates oppression, not freedom. Trusting environmental "scientists" who depend on government funding and must produce politically useful "information" will lead to economic and social disaster. 3

Even so, local and national leaders around the world are following the UN blueprint for global management and "sustainable communities," and President Clinton is leading the way. A letter I received from The President's Council on Sustainable Development states that -

In April 1997, President Clinton asked the council to advise him on: next steps in building a new environmental management system for the 21st century... and policies that foster U.S. leadership on sustainable development internationally. The council was also charged to ensure that social equity issues are fully integrated ... (Emphasis added)

Many of our representatives are backing his plan. In a 1997 letter congratulating the Local Agenda 21 Advisory Board in Santa Cruz for completing their Action Plan, Congressman Sam Farr wrote,

The Local Agenda 21 Action Plan not only has local significance, it also will have regional and national impacts. As you know, the President's Council on Sustainable Development is beginning Phase III of its work with an emphasis on sustainable communities.4 (emphasis added)

This agenda may already be driving your community ís "development", so be alert to the clues. Notice buzzwords such as "visioning," "partners," and "stakeholders." Know how to resist the consensus process. Ask questions, but don't always trust the answers. Remember, political activists, like self-proclaimed education "change agents", have put expediency above integrity. As North Carolina school superintendent Jim Causby said at a 1994 international model school conference, "We have actually been given a course in how not to tell the truth. You've had that course in public relations where you learn to put the best spin on things."5

To recognize and resist this unconstitutional shadow government of laws and regulations being imposed on our nation without congressional approval, take a closer look at its history and nature.

Agenda 21
This global contract binds governments around the world to the UN plan for changing the ways we live, eat, learn, and communicate - all under the noble banner of saving the earth. Its regulations would severely limit water, electricity, and transportation - even deny human access to our most treasured wilderness areas. If implemented, it would manage and monitor all lands and people. No one would be free from the watchful eye of the new global tracking and information system

This agenda for the 21st Century was signed by 179 nations at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Among other things, it called for a Global Biodiversity Assessment of the state of the planet. Prepared by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), this GBA armed UN leaders with the "information" and "science" they needed to validate their global management system. Its doomsday predictions were designed to excuse radical population reduction, oppressive lifestyle regulations, and a coercive return to earth-centered religions as the basis for environmental values and self-sustaining human settlements.

The GBA concluded on page 763 that "the root causes of the loss of biodiversity are embedded in the way societies use resources." The main culprit? Judeo-Christian values. Chapter 12.2.3 states that-

This world view is characteristic of large scale societies, heavily dependent on resources brought from considerable distances. It is a world view that is characterized by the denial of sacred attributes in nature, a characteristic that became firmly established about 2000 years ago with the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious traditions.

Eastern cultures with religious traditions such as Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism did not depart as drastically from the perspective of humans as members of a community of beings including other living and non-living elements.6

Maurice Strong, who led the Rio conference, seems to agree. His ranch in Colorado is a gathering place for Buddhist, Bahai, Native American, and other earth-centered religions. Yet, while spearheading the restructuring of the United Nations (see " World Heritage Protection?"), he also helped design the blueprint for the transformation of our communities. And in his introduction to The Local Agenda 21 Planning Guide, he called local leaders around the world to "undertake a consultative process with their populations and achieve a consensus on 'Local Agenda 21' for their communities."

Achieving that consensus meant painting scary scenarios of a hurting, dying planet that frighten children, anger youth, and persuade adults to submit to the unthinkable regulations. (See "Saving the Earth") It means blaming climate change on human activities and ignoring the natural factors that have - throughout time - brought cyclical changes in climate, storm patterns, wildlife migration, and ozone thinning (there has never been a "hole").

Natural factors you seldom hear about:

the earth's orbit around the sun
the gravitational pull of the moon (affects tidal forces and trigger volcanoes which cool the earth and produce El Ninos)
major volcanic eruptions which affect the ozone layer far more than all human activity
sunspot activity (times of great solar turbulence which heat the earth and recurs every nine to thirteen years)
the earth's relationship to other stars and planets
storm tracks
the earth's magnetic field (deflects storm tracks)
the annual decrease of stratospheric ozone each southern winter (our summer) when the sun's seasonal absence prevents ultraviolet rays from interacting with oxygen and producing ozone.

Local Agenda 21
Chapter 28 of Agenda 21 specifically calls for each community to formulate its own Local Agenda 21:

Each local authority should enter into a dialogue with its citizens, local organizations, and private enterprises and adopt 'a local Agenda 21.' Through consultation and consensus-building, local authorities would learn from citizens and from local, civic, community, business and industrial organizations and acquire the information needed for formulating the best strategies. (Agenda 21, Chapter 28, sec 1,3.)

This tactic may sound reasonable until you realize that the dedicated "Stakeholder Group" that organizes and oversees local transformation is not elected by the public. And the people selected to represent the "citizens" in your community will not present your interests. The chosen "partners", professional staff, and working groups are implementing a new system of governance without asking your opinion.

They probably don't even want you to know what they are doing until the regulatory framework is well under way. You may read in your local paper about "visioning", working groups, Total Quality Management, and partnership between churches, welfare and social service agencies, and other community groups. These are clues that, behind the scenes, the plan is moving forward.
