PRAGUE, August 10, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The British authorities are in no doubt -- after an operation lasting several months, the security services have foiled an imminent terrorist attack.
British Home Secretary John Reid said the security services had raised the threat level from "severe" to "critical," the highest possible level, which, according to the website of MI5, the British Security Service, means an attack is expected soon.
"The police, with the full knowledge of ministers, have carried out a major counterterrorism operation to disrupt what we believe to be a major threat to the United Kingdom and international partners," Reid said today.
London Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson said the plan had been to commit mass murder.
"We cannot stress too highly the severity that this plot represented," Stephenson said. "Put simply, this was intended to be mass murder on an unimaginable scale."

Loony Liberal Humanitarian groups are one thing, but my concern is that authorities still listening to the PC Nonsense and don't want recognize religious motivation behind Islamic Terrorist attacks.

Beware! This is Attu/Kiska for the coming "Midway" op by these terrorists. IMHO, it's the diversion for the real, and very serious, attack. (I think the next one will NOT involve airplanes, but will come across the southern border using a dirty bomb---and I don't think it will be high-casualty, but will shut down a major city, Katrina-like, for years.)
Passengers are being told they cannot carry hand luggage onto flights except for essential items placed in transparent bags. Milk for babies must be tasted by the accompanying passenger before it is allowed on board.
"All hand baggage will now have to be checked in with only a small number of essential items allowed through search controls," Alexander said. "Exceptions will be in place for those traveling with infants and for prescription medicines. Extra security arrangements will be in place for flights to the United States of America."

A guy called in to Glenn Beck's show today. He was in Germany and had a flight scheduled for London. The airline had cancelled his flight, and according to the caller, many flights all over Europe had been cancelled.

I've already thought about what to say to an acquaintance of mine who will say just that. My only response, so far, is, "Then who was responsible for 9/11? And who was responsible for the FIRST attack on the World Trade Towers while Clinton was president and all the other attacks on our embassies and the U.S. Cole?"
Bear in mind that this acquaintance's loud comment on the day of 9/11 was, "This is Bush's fault. Him and his terrible foreign relations."
Anybody have a better answer? I would love to hear it.
A little off topic...but back to the Egyptian students. 20 had applied for visas.
By air, it used to be fun. Now, it just plain sucks.
It feels like you are under martial law, not to mention you get SCREAMED AT and treated with no respect by blabbering, over-entitled high-school education TSA-ites and PMS-infested over the hill female flight attendants with crappy attitudes.
Get a job that does not involve ANY air travel.
