WATERBURY, Connecticut (AP) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman set out on his go-it-alone re-election campaign Thursday and seized on the terror arrests in Britain to argue that his Democratic opponent, Ned Lamont, does not fully understand the danger facing the nation.
Lieberman's stop in Waterbury was his first public event since losing Tuesday's Democratic primary, dismissing his campaign staff and launching his independent bid.
He seized on the terror plot in Britain to criticize Lamont's opposition to the war in Iraq.
"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us -- more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous than the Soviet communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.
"If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again."

What happened to the world where I am now rooting for a liberal?
Lamont, you big dummy!
Can't help but root for him....he's an honorable guy.
A liberal, but at least a patriotic liberal. Which are few and far between in today's Rat Party.
Aunt Esther's campaigning for Lamont. She's gonna wrap up the ugly vote for him.
It's not a threat, it's just a nuisance.
John Kerry told me so.
I hope the states republicans really rally behind him
Rasmussen Reports has just released Lieberman Lamont poll... and you can read it, if you're a premium member.
No, Joe, he understands. But the DNC leadership believes that regaining a majority is more important than American security.
Hey, Joe L.,
The time for EXTREME UNDERSTATEMENT has passed.
PLEASE! TELL IT LIKE IT IS! Call a spade a spade and a traitor a traitor!
(Go Israel, Go! Slap 'Em Down Hezbullies.)
I'm not a premium member...so can you give me a hint?
"Can't help but root for him....he's an honorable guy."
Same here. I support anyone who truly supports the safety of my country. Joe is a good guy.
I can`t believe Conn. voters voted for this a-wipe Lamont. I was listening to him on the radio the other day and he`s screeching like the male version of Cindy Sheehan.
Seems to me, MOST of Reid's words have been idiotic at best; insanely traitorous at worst and chronically stupid most of the time.
imho, of course.
Now, if someone who is... wink wink! ;)
"I can`t believe Conn. voters voted for this a-wipe Lamont. I was listening to him on the radio the other day and he`s screeching like the male version of Cindy Sheehan."
I thought the same thing when I have heard him.
I have not heard one positive thing come from this guy. It's almost as if he has a dark cloud over his head. Doesn't he see even 1 positive?
If Lieberman has nothing else going for him from a conservative perspective, at least he's right on this.
lol...of course, I'd bet that Cynthia & Aunt Esther were separated at birth...
Can't argue with dhimmocratic "logic" like that...
And, since I've obviously passed the silly rabbit stage, I think I'll take myself to shower and to bed.
The Lee sisters - Ug and Home.
I wish they'd used a blunt instrument to separate them.
Some will, some won't. I won't; noway, no how!
Really? That's why he's started saying that we need to get out of Iraq.....NOW?
Too bad there isn't a single Republican candidate or officeholder in New England who is a conservative....except Rep. King.
Just look at what happens when a Connecticut GOP family moves to Texas!
Your point? Are you trying to say that America is better off with a LaMont or do you know of a conservative with a good chance of winning the seat? I mean, they're both democrats so what are you saying? We should pull out of Iraq?
This was a CLOSED Dem primary. Most Conn. voters are registered Indies.
And in order to win the election in November, that "conscience of the Senate", that "honorable man" that far too many uneducated FREEPERS are supporting, now wants us to leave Iraq.......NOW.
The GOP candidate is worse than flawed, a GREENIE has now entered the race, and LIEberman will probably win in this now four way race; but he is an unprincipled, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar lefty, who is even now changing his opinion on the WOT and Iraq.
And NO, I am NOT a "cut & run" person.
Though I'm no big fan of neither of them, Given his reputation and history in the WOT I would atleast listen to what Lieberman has to say. Perhaps he feels like Im beginning to feel. Too many of our soldiers are thinking twice or three or four times before defending themselves in fear that they may be charged with murder by our own PC government. If we're not going to fight and win so that we can deal with Syria and Iran, I also say BRING EM HOME!
I support our troops but NOT with their hands tied.
Lamont doesn't understand the terrorist threat nor do any of his followers.
I'm no fan of Joe Lieberman but I certainly prefer him over the other guy when it comes to the WOT.
It's a choice between the Patriot Act or no patriot act. I dont think it's very honorable if Lieberman is out there now saying we should leave Iraq simply because his opponent won by saying that but I do know Lieberman's reputation on the WOT and I know it's better than the other guy.
Actually, I hope the states republicans rally behind the republican candidate and let the rats split their vote between Lieberman and Lamont.
It's always best to increase the count of republicans in the senate whenever possible.
I never said he was wonderful, honorable, or in any way a senatorial conscience. I find him to be a slimy, opportunistic liberal (but I repeat myself) who happens to be less offensive on national security than the rest of his moonbat party. That said, he'll probably win no matter what we think.
GO Lamont... The poster boy TO DEMOCRATS of where the party is headed.. Hope he gets a lot of air time.. No doubt he will make even brain dead democrats THINK!!... Best scenario a debate between Lieberman and Lamont.. On pBS.. PLEEESE...
Your own changing view is silly. Yes, we need to fight to win, but pulling out, because of PCism ( which it isn't, but that's a whole other topic ), is just as silly as any other cut&run reason.
"Actually, I hope the states republicans rally behind the republican candidate and let the rats split their vote between Lieberman and Lamont"
First of all it's not going to happen that way. Lieberman is going to take as many moderate Republicans and Independents as he does Democrats. Do you know anything about the candidate in the CT senate race? He's not a feasible candidate. Getting Lieberman elected is the best and most likely way to humiliate the Democrats here.
He'll probably win...this is going to be a four way race, but I don't expect him to keep being nearly as proactive, vis-a-vis as he once was, on the WOTC and neither should you. The man is spineless.
Yes, he will probably win, but he will do so without my and my husband's vote. There's just so much nose holding, that one can do.
I dont think it's silly to be against our government charging our troops with murder in a warzone.
There's just so much nose holding, that one can do.
Being a registered Republican in the PR of New York, I can understand the sentiment.
A Rat by any other name is still a Rat.
I recall he apparently forgot about his convictions once he became Gore's running mate in 2000. He'll do it again. I agree with your assessment, he is a finger in the wind politician.
Right now, except for a Zell Miller, there is NO RAT I trust on national security issues.
Even during and after WW II, lots of soldiers were charged and some convicted of doing all kinds of things; including theft and rape.
It really does help to know and understand history.
I keep winding up in BLUE states. Our next move is to a RED state!
