It would be a major job to place enough explosive to part the main suspension cables of the Mackinac bridge

Rather than bring it down, it would be a lot easier to plant several IEDs along the parade route and set them off simultaneously. I'm sure the terrorists have IEDs down pat by now, including their camoflage or even by using car bombs in the opposite lanes.

The casualties would be terrible in such a huge crowd, and the press would all be there to witness it, not to mention the Governor and numerous politicians. The carnage could be horrific, not to mention the added horror of those blown over the edge for the long, long trip down into the cold Straights,... you know, families and strollers and all that.

Based on what people have been posting on here, I don't assume anything is sarcastic.

Well, shall we just hand out thousands of potential detonators to terrorists?

I am all for keeping us without as many government restrictions as possible, but something has to be done to protect people.

The later suggestion of rolling random calls to those numbers from a government agency, making them unusable for detonation, is a better suggestion, I think.

No I'm not. President Bush should immediately order all anonymously held cell phones disabled. Congress should pass a law prohibiting the sale of prepaid phones without recording verified addresses and names of the buyers.

Then we'll need to do the same thing with every sort of radio that has the ability to "do something" when squelch is broken on a certain frequency: scanners, weather radios, etc. The answer isn't to start banning all sorts of electronics or making law-abiding citizens register them.

...the Michigan Murders investigation.

I just read up on those. Boy, I bet if my parents knew what was going on, they never would have sent me to the wilds of Ann Arbor from DC.

Far easier to do the latter, I would think. You must be somewhat near me, I'm on Old Mission Point in Traverse bay, dhuff.

It is a small step, in my mind, from isolating an island by dropping a bridge to isolating an island by disabling a ferry.

Does anyone consider the Law of Unintended Consequences anymore? The woman that has a restraining order against a battering spouse is now listed because of the cellphone. I could go on.

How is that woman listed where her ex-husband can get the information?

I wonder if Iran's strategy would be to press various terrorist groups to launch numerous or a wave of terror attacks here in the US soon, while maintaining at least a veneer of plausible deniability. Unlike 911 the Dems and media aren't going to hold their tongue this time, their cry will now be "Bush didn't protect us, Iraq drew resources away from hunting terrorists and homeland security, and Iraq made the Arab world even more angry with us." A risky strategy, because President Bush could and probably would attack Iran, but the gamble is that there wouldn't be enough support in the US and abroad for a sustained war to topple the regime. They absorb some blows, the UN cowers again, perhaps the US is enmeshed in a divisive impeachment fight, and Iran is free to pursue their nukes.

Not saying that it would unfold that way, but it might be what Iran is thinking. Who knows, but it is food for thought.

Nor discount the tried and true method of using suicide bombers.

Believe it or not, a poster on another thread was insisting that these were only Muslims out trying to resell these phones and that it was not terror related.

Wonder how many Islamic plants we have reading this board. And the poster I mentioned has been a member of FR since 2000.

"Where are they going to get the 10 tons (or so) of high explosives to attach to all these detonators."

All they need to take the bridge down is to sever the 2 end ties on the cables.

Er. Whatever these guys did or were planning to do, they're not going to be tried for it by some county-level prosecutor. I suggest this is a local politician trying to hitch a ride on the case's coattails.

...keep changing their cell phones with different phone numbers every call or two.

If 'talking' was the purpose, why discard the batteries?

Earlier today- before the bridge info came out- lots of us were speculating on another thread what the possible reasons could be for a purchase of this size(s). And there does seem to be some evidence based on other reports that reselling these phones at a hefty profit IS one way of raising ca$h for ...any number of reasons.

HOWEVER! They can also be used to make IED's...cover communication trails....has this poster been made aware of the bridge involvement?

to think we are in fact relying more on Walmart clerks than on the freaking FBI

Only officials, elected officials, and officers are to keep their eyes open. Citizens are to go about their business as if this planet is the Garden of Eden.
