And he accomplished what during his tenure as PM?

He has the same moral values as slick willie and managed to nearly destroy his party during his time in office. Sound familiar?

The ceasefire was approved 24- 0 with one abstention.

Seems like it's not different there than here in the US.

Their pols are no different than our leftist pols.

whether or not the IDF's original plan of northern landings (which they had been working on for *years*) would have worked or not is legitimately open to debate.

what is *NOT* debatable is that the a bosnia-style airwar, along with on-again off-again ground intervention, was worse than effective given the results we now have to live with.

sorry olmert, peretz, livni and halutz -- you guys are the ones who ratcheted up the kidnapping to a real war without having a gameplan... time to go.

"Are we waiting for the August 22 Iran reply to the UN regarding their nuke capabilities? Why wait, let's take them out now and spare the suspense."

Everywhere I discuss this, the debate usually runs this spectrum: from the Democrats in denial, who think diplomacy should should go on ad naseum and think Iran is another propaganda device for more war(these same people often refer to Hezzies as a social netweork). Then there's Bush's staunch supporters, who believe that diplomacy will go on as long as it has to, but that those in Bush's admin. know every angle of the situation, wiegh their strategies, and force will be used when the time is appropriate. Then there's those on the right who are labeled more "hard-line" who think that the longer we wait to deal with Iran, the more problematic the situation becomes. In other words, take them out asap. They still respect the president but wish he would be even more aggressive than he already is. The Israel/Hezbollah conflict seems to follow the same line of debate.

I must be a hardliner then. Why wait for the inevitable? How many times does Almadinanutjob need to say DEATH TO ISRAEL DEATH TO AMERICA before we take him seriously? He wants a fight, let's give him what he wants. So for me, it's DEATH TO ISLAMIC FACISTS everywhere. I don't care where they live.

It wasn't just kidnapping. Soldiers were murdered in that attack. Remember the young boy who was kidnapped, murdered, and bombed.

Guess you wanted to wait to respond till the perfect plan was in place.

The Iranians had other ideas.

It's a shame. Israel really needed a national unity government at this time. And, although many Freepers clearly disagree, I think the disengagement strategy (abandoning untenable settlements and basically imposing final status land divisions unilaterally in the absence of a negotiating partner) was and is sound.

There is really no other option excepting the untenable status quo on the one hand, or returning to full scale military governance of the disputed territories on the other. Although the later would clearly be to the benefit of the Palestinians (whatever they say) nothing is more obvious than that the political will to do this is nonexistent in Israel.

Israelis are understandably and irrevocably fed up with the thankless task of governing Palestinians, for which they are only demonized even when, objectively, they do a far better and more humane job of it than any Arab government (partially excepting Jordan). It just ain't gonna happen.

Once this is recognized then disengagement is the only option. HOWEVER a vigorous policy of deterrence is an absolutely ESSENTIAL component of the disengagement strategy. The Ohmert government has failed miserably in this regard, and the only way to reestablish deterrence is for it to resign.

That's because conservatives hold jobs and are productive members of society. We prefer to expend our labor by working to feed our own families instead of working to get others to do it for us.

Told to me by an aging Israili veteran many years ago and resurfaced in a discussion of the Trade Towers.

During the Jewish Wars of the first century, Jews supporting Israeli independence from Rome took control of a plush Roman settlement on steep and rugged Israeli hill called Gamala. When the hill was surrounded and sieged by the Roman army, the Jewish freedom fighters committed suicide rather than let themselves be taken by the Romans.

Today in Israel, soldiers in the Israeli Defense Force regularly go to Gamala, stand on that hill, and recite, "Never again. Never again."

I totally agree.

Which is why this book was originally titled by Russell Kirk as "The Conservative Rout." In it, he explains why activist "progressives" always win the battle against conservatives because conservatives, by definition are always fighting a defensive retreat.

Great reading, if you like depressing reality.....

Yeah, many will say our government needs more popular support before it can go ballistic. Honestly though, I think the Iranians and Hezzies are laughing every time they perceive a concession. We desperately need a hawk in govt. in 2008.

Americans voted for Bill Clinton twice.

And we got about 3,000 dead on 9/11, after having our embassies and a ship attacked with no effective counter attack mounted. Yep, we got what we voted for alright. And it wasn't pleasant.

Olmert was the mayor of Jerusalem from 1989-2001. No one particularly remembers his tenure there.

My brother lives there and does. He was particularly adept at giving in to the demands of the Moslems, at the expense of the Jewish residents (especially the religious ones) of the city.

Its true - leopards really don't change their spots.

There are some inaccuracies there. It was "the Jewish Wars of the 1st century," it was the Jewish revolt against Rome that started in 66 CE. The hilltop taken was Metzada (AKA Masada), which wasn't a plush Roman settlement, but one of Herod's royal palaces (though Herod was long dead). The "Never Again" bit is not quite true - it is "Metzada shall not fall again!" and it is spoken by Israeli troops as part of the ceremony when they get out of basic training.
