Rift Between Democrats and Religious Growing Larger
Slate ^ | 8/29/06 | Amy Sullivan

When Democratic Party leaders "found God in the 2004 exit polls," as Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. likes to say, no one expected instant results. Many of the party's early efforts to attract religious voters, after all, were scattershot and not a little awkward. No one knew quite what the "faith staffer"—a new breed of legislative aide—was supposed to do, and random-seeming insertions of Bible verses into floor speeches came off as Tourette's syndrome for Democrats. In the longer run, though, the new focus on forming relationships with religious communities and voters has been the right move for a party that had essentially limited its religious outreach to black churches. Democratic campaign trainings now smartly include tips for communicating with Catholic voters. Candidates are starting to appear on religious radio outlets. And Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has even stopped saying things to intentionally antagonize evangelicals.

Which is why it is startling that in the two years since this Democratic revival began, the party's faith-friendly image has dimmed rather than improved. The Pew Research Center's annual poll on religion and politics, released last week, shows that while 85 percent of voters say religion is important to them, only 26 percent of Americans think the Democratic Party is "friendly" to religion. That's down from 40 percent in the summer of 2004 and 42 percent the year before that—in other words, a 16-point plunge over three years. The decline is especially troubling because it cuts across the political and religious spectra, encompassing liberals and conservatives, white and black evangelicals, mainline Protestants, Catholics, and Jews

The Dems are the party of "group think". They look at the religious as just another "group" to exploit for votes. That is their cynical world view.

A couple months ago, I started keeping track of the quotes and actions of Dems against Christians. I put in "AC" (for anti-Christian) and "persecution" as keywords. Perhaps you could do that in the future, in case I miss some threads. Yes, we should compile a good list of Dem anti-Christian quotes and actions so that we can show Christians just how anti-Christian the Dems really are. This will probably be even more important in the run-up to the 2008 Presidential election.

"But she's right. The Rats are screwed until they can sincerely embrace faith. Since leftism is so inimicable to faith, that's not likely to happen for a long while."

Indeed. The day they drop the gay agenda, the ACLU, the political correctness, and the school authoritarianism is the day that they make some progress.

In others words, it's almost impossible for them to come off as sincere, as they're going to have to dump all that they've been foisting upon us for these last few years.

Real Christians can tell the real deal...

When the tenor sings at the opera everybody can tell if he hits the wrong note. He gets a pass on the low notes but he better nail the sustained high notes or we are going to toss tomatoes.

They can "talk" like a Christian all they want, they don't believe in Christian values, so the arrogance of thinking that they can fool Christians by inserting some Bible quotes into their speeches only turns off Christians even more.

Most people can handle people they disagree with, but they dislike people trying to fool them, and most of all they detest people who condescend to them. Which is why you see such a massive drop coincide with this fake reach-out attempt.

Begala is a devout pro-life Catholic who named his oldest son John Paul

Really? It's new to me.

It's news to Paul Begala too. I don't believe for a second he's pro-life. He either isn't, or has abortion so low on his list of issues that are important to him that his position on it is essentially meaningless.

What these political analyst always fail to understand is that a person's position on a particular issue is not nearly as telling as how important that issue is to that person. People do not tally up a party's platform on all the issues, and compare it to the tally of another party's platform, and vote for the party that comes out ahead. They look at the few issues that are important to them, and then votes for whichever party both agrees with those issues AND places high priority on those issues.

That is a jewel... LOL!

Aren't all Democrat speeches are like Tourette's syndrome??>

School authoritarianism - - like getting evolutionism off of educational welfare?

The DNC should ramp up that search. But the party's leaders also should remain calm. The Democrats' most productive activities on the religion front have taken place at the state level and in local campaigns. This work may not bear fruit nationally for a few years, but it's important to hang in there and keep funding it. Democrats also need to avoid the temptation to play preacher: One cringe-inducing "Praise Jeeeeezus!" from Howard Dean spoils the quiet faith of Democrats like Tim Kaine and Jennifer Granholm and Barack Obama. And they should shout from the mountaintops about Hillary Clinton and Harry Reid's plan to reduce abortion rates, talk to every evangelical who will listen about tackling global warming, and re-embrace the concept of the common good that once united religious and political progressives. Democrats, take those lights out from under your bushels.

Anyone know how hillary plans to reduce abortions? Is she having her HINO castrated?

Begala cannot be prolife because he is ardently proDemocrat Party. He can draw little prolife seeming doodles but he is NOT prolife.

I put in "AC" (for anti-Christian) and "persecution" as keywords.

Good job! I've been putting in "Christophobia" (and sometimes "Theophobia" when the example of hostility cited wasn't specifically towards Christians), and another one that gets entered often is "Religious Left." Oh, and "Jim Wallis" is the Dem guru on how to appeal to religious voters, someone usually keywords his name when he's mentioned.

Very alarming what these keyword searches will bring up. But it's important to keep track so as to understand what's going on.

And a true Christian can see through them. I recall a minister from childhood, he always talked about that special glow...coming from your relationship with Christ.

It will not make me one bit unhappy to see the liberals make fools of themselves.
Just wait til Hillary starts quoting from the Bible.
Who is going to believe her?

No wonder they have such empathy for the gays--the Libs are all in the closet.
Tighten that up and it's a tagline for someone.

YOu can't "fake" your faith... and the modern Democratic Party's ideals are completely at odds with most judeo/christian thought. You can't play lip service and think it will wash.

Actually, from I can tell and read, the "Religous Left" is just as big or bigger than the "Religious Right."
They just don't believe in anything. There is no Hell, no consequences for any misdeed, no requirements in behavior or faith.
The motivation of such folks is pretty low, at best.
