Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - September 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

I dont believe the Phillipines ramped up security like the UK, Britain and India....there wasnt a "worldwide" security upgrade or anything.

IMHO they should have, especially since the Philippines are still home to more than one terrorist group.

Terror police swoop on restaurant

Armed police have arrested 14 men overnight in an anti-terror raid on a restaurant in south London.
The intelligence-led operation took place in the Borough area of the capital, Scotland Yard said.

The men were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Police say the arrests are not connected to the alleged transatlantic jet bomb plot or the 7 July attacks.

"American Hiroshima"
By Mark M. Alexander

Send an email to Mark M. Alexander

COLUMN SNIPPET: "Last week, this column commended President George W. Bush for calling our jihadist foes as he sees them: Islamic fascists. We then asked, "Will the real Islam please stand up?". Once again, it has.

On Tuesday, 29-year-old Omeed Aziz Popal, recently returned to the U.S. from Afghanistan, went on a rampage in his SUV in a heavily Jewish area of San Francisco, killing one man and sending 14 other victims to the hospital, seven in critical condition. According to one eyewitness, "The SUV struck two people in front of the Jewish Community Center ... on California Street, a few blocks from where the rampage ended. Blood covered the sidewalk in front of the center's gift store entrance…."

This undated photo provided by Tessie Ferrer shows Stephen Jay Wilson, who was killed Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, by a hit-and-run driver in Fremont, Calif. Omeed A. Popal, 29, was arrested in San Francisco following a bloody 20-minute spree through the city in which witnesses said Popal intentionally tried to hit pedestrians and bicyclists. The rampage appeared to have started in Fremont, where investigators believe he hit and killed Wilson as he walked home. (AP Photo/Tessie Ferrer via the San Francisco Chronicle)
Related Audio:
Hugh Hewitt Show - 8/29/06 - Hour 3
Last month in Seattle, you may recall, Naveed Afzal Haq shot six Jews, killing one, at a Jewish Federation office.

On 3 March, at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, a 22-year-old Iranian, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, went on a killing spree in his SUV to "punish the government of the United States" and "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world." When making his initial statement in court, Taheri-azar expressed gratitude "for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah."

Now, contrary to what the apologists on the cut-and-run Left would have us believe, the common thread in these three murderous onslaughts is not Jews, it's not SUVs, and it's not the difficulties of Muslims coping with life in America. The common thread is Islamic fascism, an ideology that is dead set on our destruction."

"Australian Muslims to stand trial over terrorist plot"
Deutsche Presse-Agentur ^ | Sep 1, 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 11:25:46 PM PDT by Mount Athos

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Eleven Melbourne men accused of plotting a terrorist attack in Australia were committed Friday to stand trial.

The 11 were among 13 picked up in Melbourne in November over what police said was a 'significant threat' to Australia.

Committal hearings for the remaining two are to be held at a later date.

The men are all followers of Algerian-born Abdul Nacer Benbrika, a radical Melbourne cleric who also had acolytes in Sydney, eight of whom were arrested at the same time.

The 11 are charged with being members of a terrorist organization, and some are charged with funding a terrorist organization. They face prison sentences of up to 25 years.

Seven of the 11 refused to stand when directed to by the magistrate who read out their charges and asked for their pleas.

None of the defendants entered pleas Friday, but their attorneys had said earlier that their clients deny the charges laid against them.

Police alleged that the eight arrested in Sydney were part of a terrorist cell and had stockpiled enough chemicals to make 15 large bombs and could have been just days away from striking targets in Australia's largest city."

"Kyrgyzstan tries to squeeze Islamic extremists in Central Asia (Global "Jihad")"
Christian Science Monitor ^ | Sep 1 2006 | David Stern

Posted on 09/01/2006 11:37:00 PM PDT by Mount Athos

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Kyrgyz authorities have issued an ultimatum to Islamic extremists, including one Al Qaeda-linked group, to turn themselves in by Friday, in an effort to quash what they say is a growing militant threat in ex-Soviet Central Asia.

Authorities say that extremists are trying to set up a base here to overthrow Kyrgyzstan's secular post-Soviet government, as well as those in neighboring Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and create an Islamic state.

But observers say that the government's harsh methods - in a country that has had a traditionally tolerant and secular Sunni Muslim population - are creating more radicals than they are eliminating, and igniting ethnic tensions in the Ferghana Valley, a volatile, diverse region shared by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The crackdown is also part of a series of incidents suggesting Kyrgyzstan's turn from the West, and the US in particular, and embrace of Russia and Uzbekistan.

Law-enforcement bodies have fought pitched battles with gunmen in recent months. In May, armed individuals overran Kyrgyz and Tajik border posts, killing three Tajik border guards and a Kyrgyz customs official. In July, Kyrgyz security forces killed five suspected members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), a group that fought beside the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"We are reaching critical mass of armed people in the region," says Martha Brill Olcott, an expert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. "I think there could be a wave of acts of violence in Central Asia."

On August 6, authorities shot Muhammadrafik Kamalov, an ethnic Uzbek, and two passengers while they were driving in his car. Kamalov, a popular imam in the Ferghana Valley, belonged to a banned extremist group, officials claimed, and his passengers were IMU members. Kamalov's supporters say that their leader was not affiliated with any group and had no connection with the two men found with him.

The incident amplified concerns that simmering religious and communal tensions could spill over into violence. The anti-extremist campaign has largely targeted ethnic Uzbeks, who tend to be more observant than the Kyrgyz. Thousands of Uzbeks turned out for Kamalov's funeral to express their outrage.

Kamalov's son, Muhammad Rashod, who succeeded his father as head of the As-Sarakhsiy mosque, says the government has created the threat. "There are no terrorists with guns in their hands in our Kyrgyzstan," says the younger Mr. Kamalov. "But if there continue to be actions of this kind, such groups will emerge - wounded hearts will have their vengeance.""

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "FBI evidence that helped convict Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols went on display Friday at the Oklahoma City bombing memorial, even as a congressman and others continue to raise questions about the 1995 explosion that killed 168 people.

The display includes items ranging from mangled pieces of the truck used in the explosion to the automatic Glock handgun taken from McVeigh when he was arrested by a state trooper 90 miles from the bombing site."

"Belgian Authorities Destroy Holocaust Records"
From the desk of Paul Belien on Thu, 2006-08-31 21:32

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Belgian authorities have destroyed archives and records relating to the persecution and deportation of Jews in Belgium in the 1930s and 1940s. Some of this happened as recently as the late 1990s. This was revealed during hearings in the Belgian Senate last Spring. Though the Senate report dates from 4 May the Belgian press has not yet mentioned the affair. The Senate report says that “documents about the period 1930-1950 have been destroyed on a massive scale.”

The systematic destructions of the records of police and judiciary from the 1930s and ’40s happened chiefly in Brussels and Wallonia, the French-speaking south of Belgium. The Senate report states that in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking north of the country, archives have been saved thanks to conscientious archivists. “This policy – of having competent archivists manage dead archives – contrasts with the disastrous situation at the offices of the public prosecutors in Brussels and Wallonia.”

While the records about the persecution of the Antwerp Jewry have been kept intact, documents about the fate of the Jews in Brussels and in French-speaking cities with large pre-war Jewish communities, such as Charleroi and Liège, were purposely destroyed. In Charleroi all the archives relating to the 1930s and the war years have vanished. In Brussels the judicial archives are present “until the early 1930s, while there is (almost) nothing left of the period thereafter,” the report says, adding that “Reference is often made to the 1944 fire of the Palais de Justice to explain this lack of archives [...] However, there is no doubt that large parts of the Brussels judicial wartime archives were destroyed after 1944.”

The report says that some archives disappeared very recently, during the reform of the Belgian police forces in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the Gendarmerie was abolished and the Federal Police was instituted. Crucial parts of the Gendarmerie archives vanished in the process.

In Charleroi the archives of both the municipal police as well as the judicial police were completely destroyed in the late 1970s. Before the war Charleroi had a relatively large Jewish community which was all but exterminated during the war, while in Antwerp a significant proportion of the Jews managed to survive. Yet in Belgium no-one is familiar with the extermination of the Walloon Jewry, while Antwerp is regularly blamed for having been a “center of anti-Semitism.” By destroying paper trails people are made to forget that certain events ever took place.

Hugo Vandenberghe, the leader of the Flemish Christian-Democrats, suggested that the destruction of the archives “may have had a political motive.” Senator Vandenberghe referred to the anti-Semitism of the Belgian authorities in the 1930s. The historian Nico Wouters told the Senators during the hearings that even after the war the Belgian authorities continued to arrest German Jews who had survived the holocaust by going into hiding, under the pretext that they were “citizens of a hostile nation.”

Records relating to the so-called “phantom trains” have also disappeared. The “phantom trains” were convoys of “unpatriotic” Belgians, such as Flemish-Nationalists and Communists, and non-Belgian citizens, most of them Jewish fugitives from Germany and Poland. They were arrested by the Belgian authorities at the beginning of the war and deported to France."

"Arrests in Moroccan Terrorist Network Rises to 56"

The Associated Press

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Moroccan security services have now rounded up 56 people as they dismantle a network allegedly planning terror attacks in the North African kingdom, the interior minister was quoted as saying.

Four of the suspects were women, including the wives of two pilots for the national airline, Royal Air Maroc, said Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa, quoted on the official MAP news agency Thursday."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Morocco's government has cracked down on suspected terrorists since suicide bombings in Casablanca in 2003 left 45 people dead and stunned a nation where most espouse moderate Islam.

In the recent raids, police seized explosives, laboratory materials and propaganda leaflets, officials have said.

The group's leader was a former convict who recruited Islamic radicals to train them in explosives use and planned to wage a holy war, the ministry has said. The group allegedly also sought to finance its activities through robberies of financial institutions and bank trucks."

Yes it is, because an understanding of history may prevent a similar incident happening again.

Unfortunately, Ahmadinejad wants to go for the final push, in my opinion.

"PAKISTAN: 'TALIBAN' CALLS THE SHOTS IN TWO WAZIRISTANS"
Miran Shah, 1 Sept. (AKI)- (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - "We will bring the Islamic revolution to Pakistan and make the country the home of Islam" - powerful lines from a Pashtu poem - rang out loud and clear in a tent packed with hundreds of people celebrating the graduation of madrassa students in Miran Shah, on the Pakistan-Afghan border. But it was far more than just a ceremony. Locals referred to Wednesday's meeting as the largest ever gathering of pro-Taliban militants, tribal elders and politicians in Waziristan's history, and for many it was a snapshot of the changing dynamics in the volatile region."
