WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2006 — Air Force Maj. Jill Metzger, who vanished Monday in Kyrgyzstan, has been found and now is back in Air Force control, ABC News has learned.

"We are elated to have Jill back with us," said Air Force spokesman Col. Scott Reese. Local police notified U.S. officials that she had been found at 1:15 a.m. local time in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Air Force officials say she was found alone and appears to have been beaten. Officials say she is "coherent," in "relatively good condition" and is talking to investigators. She is also undergoing medical evaluation.

Officials would not comment on the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and said the investigation is ongoing

The news brought elation to Metzger's family.

"It's a dream come true. The most significant event of our lives," said Kelly Mayo, Metzger's father-in-law. Mayo said he has not spoken to Metzger yet, but believes she had been kidnapped and "whoever had her dropped her off on the side of the road."

Metzger vanished on Monday afternoon in Kyrgyzstan — a poor, predominantly Muslim country in Central Asia. Since shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, Kyrgyzstan has been home to a strategically important U.S. military base that supports operations in Afghanistan. The government is generally pro-American, and in recent years has experienced sporadic clashes with Islamic fundamentalists.

Just 10 days before deploying to Kyrgyzstan in April, Metzger married Air Force Capt. Josh Mayo. They had already bought tickets for a honeymoon in Jamaica later this month, he said.

"We were going to take Jet Skis out, have a couple of romantic dinners. It is very disappointing," said Mayo

Before her disappearance, Metzger was last seen out shopping with five others from the base. The group briefly separated inside a department store in the center of Bishkek, several miles from the base. They had agreed to meet a short time later, but Metzger never showed up.

It has to be related to shoes. Lots and lots of shoes.

I hate to say it, but that was my first thought, too....;^)

I do not know who promotes faster now. It is normal for most Army Captains to make Major around the 10th year of commissioned service. Yes, some water walkers make Major after 8-9 years, which is below the zone. Some get passed over the first time, too. Get passed over the second time and you are gone.

Sounds plausible. I would not get separated from at least another American in any foreign country these days.

From everything I have read, Major Metzger was a superior officer and athlete. The kind of self-discipline it takes to become a three-time marathon CHAMPION does not indicate to me a silly woman lost on a shoe-shopping trip or off on a sexual lark with some male. Believe it or not, to some women with productive lives and a myriad of responsibilities, SEX is not the only thing on their minds. Nor is SEX something to make one throw away a stellar career, a marriage, and reputation. For some fat-ass former Presidents, yes - but not a woman and officer of Metzger's caliber. Grow up and quit thinking like teenage boys - or worse, a Slick Willie.

By all accounts, Metzger was savvy, smart, and totally committed to her career in the AF. She is an example of American military achievement, and was a public figure due to her marathon championships.

She deserves much better than the juvenile speculation from freepers, who ought to show a little more respect.

I don't know about that. Doesn't it concern all of us if a woman in a combat zone is kidnapped? It's the American people who have decided it's OK to put women in this situation. I am not comfortable with intentionally placing women in harms way. If she left of her own will it's a matter for the JAG not the public.

Amen!

Any woman in the armed forces is there of her own volition, having made the choice that she will do her part serving her country in uniform. No one "put her there."

Men do not want nor expect women to fight for them.

Nor, do men ever want to see a woman hurt.

The fact that so many now see both men and women being killed or injured as being the same, shows how effective the society has been 'feminized', which was always the Left's goal.

That does not mean that a women should be in or near combat.

That is still against the law.

That is why women are restricted from combat arms.

A law that is legimate seeing that women are different than men in many ways.

A fact that even those who consider themselves conservatives seem to have forgotten.

There will be a time when you will be glad that American
women can fight and kill instead of being helpless victims.

I am so glad she is OK.

I have to agree with what you all posted. As a former Air Force officer, I cannot believe the appalling comments I have seen by Freepers on this thread.

An officer disappears and is found saying she was kidnapped and beaten, and we are witness to the worst kind of slander against her.

DU wouldn't have treated this officer so badly.

I still cannot believe it.

You are so right. This is not the Runaway-Bride from Georgia. This is a U.S. Air Force Major, the only female ever to consecutively win the A.F. Marathon, and a newlywed who was one day prior to coming home, with a honeymoon and the Marine Corps Marathon to look forward to. Freepers or anyone on the FReeper boards who post disparaging remarks about our military ought to lose privileges here. This is simply wrong and should be unheard of here. Sometimes these days, I swear this place can be mistaken for DU.
