To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal

WARWICK, R.I., Sept. 9 -- With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.
In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

For backing Chafffe, he's likely had to promise to keep the "R" behind his name.
Best to send the $$$ directly to the candidate of choice. The RNC is not much better than the DNC. BTW, do you know, in brief, or tell me where to look, to find the four hotly contested Senate seats...I need to make a few donations. Thanks.
Actually, I see both sides to this argument.
IMO the GOP incumbent should be given every benefit of the doubt. But not total. A tough call.
So is the conservative candidate in Rhode Island. So is Kathleen Harris in Florida. Shall we sell them down the river as well?
I like many others,I imagine, consider myself a lover of USA and Conservatism,and will do whatever Ican to advance the agenda of these core beliefs.Yet after campaigning and talking others to vote our way, we find ourselves with all aspects of Govt. Branches full of people we should expect to also advance this agenda,yet we`re asked to vote for people like this traitor;and we remain unfulfilled in what we beleive should be being done about these certain things(Build fence on borders Immediately and deport as many as possible),and what Should be done to FINISH this War ASAP,is it time for apathy?
Well, as it happens, I have a vote in this thing, and I'm plenty fired up for Tuesday.

And even if he wins, there's no guarantees he'll vote with the GOP on key issues.
Tell your party hack GOP bosses to stay out of the primaries. This is what primaries are for - cleansing and getting rid of liberal Republicans. If Chafee wins the primary, then yes, hold the nose. Until then, the national GOP has no business interfering in primary elections.
Demos do have a chance, and a good one, of taking the Senate. EACH contest could be the critical one. That's what makes this a tough call.
No...but Talent in Missouri...McGavick in Washington State....Michael Steele in Maryland.....Kennedy in Minnesota are just some of the pubbies that could use some money.....McGavick can beat Cantwell for sure!!
So you are telling me that we should basically say "hey, the Dems can't win the senate, so let's toss Chaffee and give up on Kean Jr. Don't worry, it'll be OK, the Dems can't win the senate, we're sure of it".
no thanks, we can keep the RI seat and get a pickup in NJ - why shouldn't we try?
I'm all for firing up the base. But in states like RI and NJ, that base can't elect anyone in a statewide race.

I agree with you. They probably believe that a real conservative doesn't have a chance of winning and that it's better to have a RINO that they can partailly control rather than a DEM they can't control at all.
That is exactly how the RNC thinks.
The RNC is not concerned with principles or conservatism or anything other than winning.
If that fact bothers an individual then that individual should not contribute to the RNC. Contribute directly to the candidate of your choice and eliminate the middle man.
You don't see Dims helping Chafee, do you?
So why is the GOP fawning over Lieberman?
Schlesinger has no chance but surely the GOP could have recruited a better Republican to run.
Chaffee had an ACU rating of 12% conservative in '05. I don't think we need that.
Along with several conservative friends, we have been practicing "abstinence" (no donations to the RNC, NRCC or NRSC, etc) for nearly two years now, with all donations going only to specifically targeted conservatives.
How does that famous line go? "Free at last, free at last..." That's how we all feel.
the base came out to vote for Harris in the primary. can that base give her the victory in the general election in FL? we will soon find out. the equation may be better for our side in a state like FL, but I can assure you, the base in RI and NJ can not, by themselves, elect anyone.
