CBS) EAST LOS ANGELES Thousands of people packed the streets of East Los Angeles for a Mexican Independence Parade, billed as the largest celebration of its kind in the United States.
The 26th annual East Los Angeles Mexican Independence Parade started about 11 a.m. and by noon about 250,000 people were in attendance, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's Dep. Cornelius Healey of the East Los Angeles station.
The parade began at the corner of East Cesar Chavez Avenue and Indiana Street and ended at Cesar Chavez Avenue and Mednik Avenue.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa served as grand marshal. Members of Major League Soccer's Chivas USA also took part in the parade on a double-decker bus.
The parade was preceded by a reception at the Super Market at the corner of E. Cesar Chavez Avenue and Indiana Street.
About 70 deputies, explorers, reserves and five civilian volunteers were monitoring the parade, according to Healey.
Wouldn't Mexico be a better place to celebrate Mexican independence?
Yes sir.
Mexican Independence Day is September 16. I guess they just couldn't wait. (At least they know it's not May 5...Cinco de Mayo...which makes them smarter than most of the msm that get it wrong every year.)
250,000? Decent-sized turnout. Wonder what (small) fraction are U.S. citizens?
It'll belong to Mexico soon enough anyway. Oh, but they'll still get the welfare, tuition, etc at our expense.
The keenest form of Mexican nationalism is MOVING TO MEXICO.
I'm looking for pictures -- there seems to be a news blackout on them.
And some day, when/if they ever get true independence, perhaps they shall.
What is Mexican Independence Day? What's it doing in Los Angelea California, and what's the Mayor of Los Angeles Californis, USA, doing celebrating it?
And will Los Angeles show up?
Of course -- "La Raza"
Kinda like KKK for Mexicans.
Ok, who invited Teddy Kennedy?
Just did a quick check of the local (L.A.) NBC, ABC, and Fox News, and not one network even mentions the story, let alone shows pics. ....although I could've missed it.
We should have put a Freeper at the lead of the parade and head South for the border.
Sorry, this story has no credibility.
This is a sign of bad assimilation. Both the immigrants and the natives have to work harder to assimilate the newcomers: the immigrants by accepting English and American customs; the natives by accepting that nonEuropean immigrants can be every bit as much American as any immigrant or native, and by encouraging the immigrants to act more American, and give them nudges in the right direction.
