A GOP leader takes terror swipe at Dems (ouch!)

House Republican leader John Boehner, just a day after the Sept. 11 anniversary, thrust his party's election-year emphasis on national security back into the spotlight Tuesday when he said he "wondered" if Democrats were more interested in safeguarding the rights of accused terrorists than protecting Americans.

The Ohio Republican's statement came after President Bush's Sept. 11 anniversary speech Monday evening drew the anger of Democrats who charged that it lapsed into partisanship. The highly charged rhetoric showed that the confluence of terrorism, national security and the war in Iraq is a key issue in a bitterly fought midterm election campaign in which polls and prognosticators say Democrats could make significant gains into the Republican majority.

Speaking of Democrats, Boehner told reporters, "I wonder if they're more interested in protecting the terrorists than protecting the American people.

"They certainly don't want to take the terrorists on to defeat them,'' he added in the context of answering questions about proposed legislation to legalize Bush administration plans for military tribunals to try some terrorism suspects under special rules. The administration's earlier plans for such tribunals were struck down by the Supreme Court, which suggested that Congress provide a remedy through legislation.

In recent days, congressional Democrats have been quiet on the trial issue, preferring to let the White House fight over proposed legislation with Republican critics of the tribunal plan such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Warner of Virginia, who chairs the Armed Services Committee.

Republican leaders say they are close to an agreement on legislation, meaning they would have to deal with such issues as whether to allow tribunals to consider hearsay and coerced evidence and prevent defendants from having access to classified material being used in their cases.

Are there enough republicans in congress that CAN tell the truth?

We laready know what are the goals of the progressive (read communist) socialist dnc.

How about truth-telling from the RNC ? We've yet to hear anything.

Absolutely. I actually heard that he said this at the news at the top of the hour. I couldn't believe it, but as happy as heck he did.... Better late than never. Now if the rest ot the pubbies would grow a set, and get serious about security, we may have a winning combo.

No need to wonder.

The facts speak for themselves.

The answer is a resounding, "YES!"

Keep up the pressure. Drive home the point. The Democrats are supporting the enemy; the Democrats are against our troops.

This is a good start. We need more GOPers to get tough with the cowardly Dems.

Bush, Cheney and Rummy have been hammering the dems, but not name calling. The dirty fighting needs to be from the GOP congress and the RNC. Hopefully Rove is getting ready to roll.

That line, "Democrats could make gains this year." I have noticed that has replaced, "Democrats to take Senate and house," line in the last 2 weeks. The former is probably more accurate. The dems will gain some seats but not a majority to take either.

Past time. . .and it is amazing to see their response kick in; against even a 'tweak of truth'. . .

You would hope even a spineless Repub might add in Boehner's defense. . .just a 'if the shoe fits'. . .observation.

But no. . .Boehner will swing alone for his daring if only for a moment; to 'go there'. . .

Yep. I'm guessing it was the plan all along to hold fire until election season. Bush has been on fire, Tony Snow is impressive. Rummy spanked the dems and the press. Now haster and Boehner are starting to move.
