Jeff Cooper has died
e-mail from Gunsite

Posted on 09/25/2006 4:08:13 PM PDT by AzSteven

Friends,

At the request of the family it is my sad duty to report the passing of our founder, Jeff Cooper. Jeff died peacefully at home this afternoon while being cared for by his wife Janelle and daughter Lindy.

There will be a private internment at Gunsite by invitation, with a public memorial service at the Whittington Center at a date to be announced.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

DVC,

Ed

Ed Head Operations Manager Gunsite Academy, Inc. 2900 W. Gunsite Rd. Paulden, AZ 86334

wow. I feel sad that another of the John Wayne real men has done his duty and gone to his reward. What a great guy. I've read a lot about his work in the combat arms and the other contributions to the use of pistols in CCQ.

May you ride, shoot straight, and always speak the truth at the right hand of the ALMIGHTY!

Great book, by the way.

Sorry to hear. He was a great voice on safe gun-handling and responsible gun ownership and use. His sanity will be missed.

After his Heart Attack a few weeks ago, I did not think he would be around for long.

My Condolances to His Family, to the Gunsite family, and to shooters everywhere. We have truly lost one of the Great Ones today.

Many people I know and work with consider me some kind of "gun expert" because I shoot and hunt quite a bit. However, every time I take a "newbie" non-shooter to the range, before we leave I always quote to them one of Col. Cooper's axioms:

"You are no more armed because you own a gun than you are a musician because you own a piano. The instrument is not the answer; the skill to use the instrument is the answer."

The clarity, logic and simple truth of Col. Cooper's quote has NEVER failed to make a positive impression and thought-provoking look upon any of the (often liberal and previously terrified of guns) non-shooters I've taken to the range.

In his long life Col. Cooper probably forgot more about firearms than I will ever learn in my own.

Rest In Peace.
