House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., requested Sunday that the Justice Department conduct an investigation into former Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record)'s electronic messages to teenage boys — a lurid scandal that has put House Republicans in political peril.

"As Speaker of the House, I hereby request that the Department of Justice conduct an investigation of Mr. Foley's conduct with current and former House pages to determine to what extent any of his actions violated federal law," Hastert wrote in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Looks like Hastert is sending a strong message here.

He should have sent a strong message months ago.

This article indicates that Foley's orientation was not a secret....

it's an excerpt

http://www.gopusa.com/commentary/ckincaid/2006/ck_10021.shtml

The failure to use the word "homosexual" in describing Foley's dirty talk is likely due to fear over being labeled "homophobic" or biased by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which exists to make sure that only positive portrayals of homosexuality are permitted in the media. Plus, the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association previously warned the media, in connection with sexual abuse by Catholic Priests, to avoid linking homosexuality to pedophilia.

The questionable line we already see emerging in the media is that Foley is guilty of inappropriate behavior toward young people but that it has nothing to do with his "sexual orientation."

In fact, the entire scandal might have been avoided if Foley's homosexuality had been exposed and confronted, rather than protected, over the last several years. Top Republicans and the media were part of this cover-up.

Peter LaBarbera, who began his writing career at Accuracy in Media, raised questions about Foley's secret life back in 2003, after alternative newspapers and columnists began running stories about Foley's homosexuality, even reporting that he had a "boyfriend." LaBarbera gave credit to Bob Norman of the Broward-Palm Beach New Times newspaper for exposing Foley. However, LaBarbera found that most non-homosexual newspapers did not pursue the matter and that homosexual Republican groups were protecting him. For example, LaBarbera quoted Patrick Guerriero, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, a homosexual activist group, as saying, "I could care less about [Foley's] sexual orientation." Guerriero insisted that the congressman had no obligation to discuss it.

At the time, as Foley was said to be considering running for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate, LaBarbera noted that "Many homosexual activists assert matter-of-factly that Rep. Foley is 'gay' and resent that he is not running for Senate as an open homosexual. Many social conservatives, on the other hand, argue that Florida's voters have a right to know what lies behind his pro-homosexual voting record in Congress."

We'll have to wait and see if Hastert knew about the instant messages. I've read the emails and although they are creepy, they aren't enough to cause an investigation.

I really hope that CREW (Soros funded project), will be included in this investigation. I want to know who had the gross IM's, why THEY sat on them for three years, and why now?

My theory (probably wrong) was that they had originally planned to use them against Foley when he was going to run for US Senate in 2004, but then when he dropped out, they decided to wait for this election, because possibly they wanted to run someone a little more competitive against him.

All our leads, lead straight to George Soros (who if you remember decided conveniently last week to "get out of politics)

Having said all that, I do hope they can nail Foley on something.

Let's not forget one of the star Democrat scumbags of the '90s (I'm sure the DBM was just as tough on this guy as they are on Foley, right??):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Reynolds

"In 1994, he was indicted for having sex with a sixteen year old campaign volunteer. Reynolds initially denied what he claimed were racially motivated charges but on August 22, 1995 he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. Reynolds was sentenced to five years in prison and expected to be released in 1998. However, in April of 1997, he was convicted on fifteen counts of bank fraud and lying to SEC investigators and as a result, was sentenced to an additional six and a half years in federal prison. After serving 42 months of his 78 month sentence, U.S. President Bill Clinton commuted his sentence and Reynolds served the balance in a half way house. Mel Reynolds served his entire sentence on the original charges."

Would you tell me what CREW stands for? Thanks!

Hastert acted like the manager who believes that ignorance is bliss. It reminded me of an episode of My Name is Earl when Earl tried to tell the CEO of a company that one of his franchise guys had burned down a competitor, and the CEO basically told Earl that the conversation he just had never happened and walked away, telling Earl that he wasn't better off by knowing all of that because it's a lot of hassle to deal with it and having the responsibility to deal with it.

"Denny, FYI, our closeted colleague Mark Foley has been creeping out pages with emails."

He basically decided when told this that he would not follow up on it-- interviewing the other pages, the page in question, other staffers in Alexander's office, parents of the pages, congressmen, whatever. He could have gotten the info and talked to Foley and threaten him with leaking the info to the press if he didn't play ball.

Bubba had oral sex with an intern IN THE WHITEHOUSE and was impeached. Bubba said that he considers the impeachment "a badge of honor".

Before you get too upset at Hastert, you need to realize that the salacious stuff was in the Instant Messages...NOT the e-mails. Hastert didn't know about the IM's until last week.

The reason he has called for an investigation is that if these are 3-year old IM's, someone sat on them and didn't notify leadership for three years. Who was that person or organization?

Isn't Foley's opponent (running in a 68% Republican district) unusually well-funded? And didn't John Kerry show up there last week to campaign for him?

Now why would those two things be happening in a district that was supposedly safe? My spidey-senses are tingling again.

Do we have any other unusually well-funded democrats running against Republicans who are expected to win? If so, we had better be prepared.
