Muslims cannot conform to US laws since it is against their religion. So why are they here if not to destroy us?

You realize she will soon complain that she feels singled out by wearing the 'garb'. So the school will force the others to also dress in RagTop drag!

We WILL be assimilated into islamofascist culture by 2010!

Hey, I'll bite...I think gym as a class is the ultimate in stupidity. The kids who do well are typically already athletic and don't need it - the kids who need it often hate it (or grow to), and it doesn't stick with them after they've met the requirement.

One locality in my area has it right; they offer a summer PE class for credit, and the kids actually get to do enjoyable stuff: canoing, swimming, field trips for beach volleyball...in short, physical activity without the "Lord of the Flies" mentality found in many gym classes.

1958, a small High School in Palmetto Florida. A young lady of the Mennonite religion asked not to have to dress out for gym because her religion forbade her from wearing "shameful" clothing. The school immediately provided a waiver for her and the whole thing was over. I graduated with this young lady who wore a gray dress and white hat every day to school for four years. Not one student ever teased her or berated her.

A different time I guess.......

If that offends anyone on my list to bad ask to be removed i dont really care. This amish school shooting that I pinged you guys to has me so mad im seeing red literally.I posted a reasonable responce to it and got tore up by supposedly "conservative" freepers that would rather thier children be lead to a slaughterhouse that public schools have become then defend thier family and the constitution because its so much easier.

If you have libertarian pings to send send them to traviskicks he can ping the list to them im taking the month of october off from freerepublic and the internet in general

The article did not mention what the girl should wear as a substitute, and everyone thinks it is a burkha. Does anyone know the actual facts? Does the girl wear a burkha to school, or regular clothes?

CAIR - Terrorist front group. Cair doesn't give a damn about America, period. They have spent every waking momement since 9/11 whining, suing, crying about everything in America that doesn't go the Islamofascist way! They are dangerous, anti-american, anti-everything not Islam. PERIOD!

Oh gosh. If this had been a Christian -- say, opting out of an evolution module in class -- she'd have been roundly praised for courageously standing up against the evil public school and there would be shouts of "Amen!" But since she's a Muslim -- and since she's demanded that most treasonous, un-American, despicable of rights, the right to wear pants -- the world is ending.

But wait, there's more. (There always is.) It's not enough that the government strip her of her pants or make her pay for the privilege of keeping them, say some. The government should deport her and millions of her coreligionists! We'll call it the Gaius Verres Approach to Citizenship.

I honestly do not understand why some of these people are admitted to the Big Tent. In the good old days, they'd be placed in the Little Tent out back and we'd charge admission to look at them. But I guess two-party politics makes strange bedfellows.

This issue is not about modesty -- it is the camels nose inside the tent -- setting precedents. I resent having to accommodate "special" groups on anything that is good enough for the rest of us. Why don't we teach school in 373 different languages/dialects? Or have public holidays for 57 different religions/sects? Why should the large majority bend over backwards for the militant minority? F'em!

I don't see it as forcing Sharia law on the other kids, only asking that the girl be ALLOWED to wear long pants. Frankly, I don't see a problem with it.

It seems that the school is not being reasonable. Christian students often ask to not wear shorts and they wear sweats or long culottes. In fact, there is a girl on the Lake Braddock softball team that wears a skirt instead of the shorts. Her mom buys material that matches the uniform and creates skirts with attached matching shorts underneath. This girl would be a sophomore or a junior this year.

There are other options than shorts.

Actually, I think that I disagree with a lot of people here on this... If a muslim group were to try to "outlaw" shorts in gym class, then I can understand the outrage. However, it's a matter of modesty, and it really should have been much simpler to solve, simply by saying that the girl could wear sweat pants to gym class.

I think that this is a big deal made by people who are looking for something to get outraged about.

Hey, no problem!

Let her wear her traditional clothing.

Give her a pile of rocks, and let her get her exercise by throwing the rocks as hard as she can. Soon she can progress to running with her heavy suicide belt, then into axe class to get ready for headless jihad!

Very rigorous class so the cafeteria will have to cook up some goat meat.

School training is good to teach you a trade!

I honestly do not see what the problem is here.

The theory that allowing Muslim girls to wear more modest apparel would be enforcing "Shari'a" on the public at large doesn't seem to me to hold up. It would be objectionable if the Muslims were trying to enforce their rules on others, but I didn't see anything in the article indicating that was the case.

I'm pretty sure that it is perfectly possible to participate in physical education classes without necessarily having to wear shorts. What would be wrong with letting this kid go to the class dressed in, for example, a modest sweatsuit outfit?

Muslims, btw, are not the only people concerned that their children not have to wear immodest clothing. Other groups share that concern -- orthodox Jews, Mormons, many conservative Protestant, have some of the same concerns. In a way, after seeing so many little girls dressed like Britney Spears wannabes and hookers-in-training, a concern for modesty is quite refreshing.

When I was in h.s., the alternative to gym was ROTC. The "Rotsies" would practice military marching and target practice at the school's gun range...

On second thought, maybe the young muslim gal should just be given a pass.

She and her family can return to where ever they came from and she can take gym classes there. Screw them. They chose to come here and live, so they can live by our rules, not theirs. Or they can leave. Does anyone here live in Burke?

The 9th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va., was "threatened with failing the class if she did not wear shorts," according to a statement released by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

If this is true, that's wrong. As long as she participates in the class, why should it matter what she wears?

I feel sorry for the girl: her parents are making her stand out from the crowd, at an age when it is ABSOLUTELY IMPERITIVE to try to "fit in".

So she's the only one going to be running around in odd uncomfortable gym attire, when all her colleagues (because for sure she won't have any "friends": her parents make her too wierd to have friends) get to wear shorts and conform to the norm.

How horribly sad for this little girl! I think she ought to rebel and wear shorts, just to spite her folks.
