Parents Charged With Abducting Bride

SALT LAKE CITY - The parents of a bride-to-be told their daughter they were taking her on a shopping trip, but then drove to Colorado and kept her there until she missed the nuptials, officials said.

Lemuel and Julia Redd have been charged with second-degree felony kidnapping. Utah County Attorney Kay Bryson said Tuesday he met with the couple's daughter, Julianna, and her now-husband Perry Myers before charging the parents.

"I've never had a case quite like this," Bryson said. "It is strange that parents would go to that extent to keep an adult daughter from marrying the man that she had chosen to marry."

The Redds told their 21-year-old daughter they were taking her on a shopping trip Aug. 4 and then drove 240 miles from Provo to Grand Junction, Colo., according to Provo police Capt. Rick Healey. Myers, 23, called police when his bride didn't attend a pre-wedding dinner with his parents that night.

The Redds spent the night in Colorado and drove back to Provo, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, the next day, Healey said. They arrived after the young couple was supposed to have been married in a ceremony that day at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple in Salt Lake City.

The couple, both students at Brigham Young University, were married in the temple on Aug. 8, Myers said. They are expecting their first child in May.

The Redds didn't want their daughter to get married, but the bride has been reluctant to say what happened on the drive. Myers said he and his wife were not discussing details of the car ride but said her parents' objections were not about him.

"It really has nothing to do a lot with me. It really is some issues with the family," he said.

Bryson said after reviewing the police investigation it was clear a crime was committed. Charges were filed Friday.

Lemuel, 59, and Julia Redd, 56, are scheduled to make an initial court appearance Oct. 26. If convicted, the Redds could face one to 15 years in prison.

A call made to a listing for Lemuel H. Redd at the address in Monticello, Utah, listed in court documents went unanswered Tuesday. No attorney for the Redds is listed in court documents and it couldn't immediately be determined if they had legal representation.

You know--I have learned that however hard you try to raise your children in the right way, when they are grown, you have no sway over who they bring into the family.

Maybe the groom was the real Mormon, but the bride's family was one of those polygamy followers?

Maybe the parents were upset that they couldn't attend the wedding.

If you aren't a member you can't go into the temple.
Cause you aren't good enough.
Thats really insulting.

If my child was getting married and I was barred from the ceremony, I'd be ticked too.

Pinky-teasing in front of a news camera? I guess that's one way to get her revenge.

Yeah, I'm not real happy with my son's choice either. I have a feeling when he's out of college, he will propose. I only hope her true colors shows itself to him before then. My husband and I think she is a witch in disguise.

More likely someone else is the father of the child.

If my parents had pulled this stunt on me - and if they did in what they believe was in my best interest, right or not - I sure would not have filed felony charges against them but handled it as a family matter.

Reminds me of the total ignorance about the Church of Christ when the Mary Winkler case was being discussed.

I was thinking the same thing!

BTW, it's a disgrace that she is out of jail! The double standard is appalling.

It has nothing to do with being "good enough". However, it is, understandably, a difficult and sensitive thing when some family members are LDS and some aren't.

As difficult as the situation is, there are some things that can alleviate some of the pain:

  1. Non-Mormons can (and should, IMO) tour the inside of a newly-constructed temple before it is dedicated.
  2. There are pictures available of the interior of many temples that have been dedicated, so one may know what it looks like inside.
  3. The actual ceremony is very simple and short, compared to most marriage ceremonies outside the temple. IOW, you aren't missing much of a show or anything.
  4. Most couples will hold a reception in a regular church building, where anyone may attend, where most of the "pomp and circumstance" can still take place.
I realize none of those entirely take away the hurt feelings, etc., but I think they do help in many cases.

I admit I don't know that much about it, so perhaps you can clear up a question for me.

I know a lot of genealogical work is done in the Mormon Church, but people have told me that when a Mormon marries someone with other religious faiths in their family, they go back and "convert" the other family members after the fact.

This can't be true; it would be unbearably arrogant to do so. Right?

Very sad. Is he still married to her? Do you have children that are half-normal, half bags of scum?

I agree. That's disgusting. If it is true, no wonder people think of Mormonism as a cult. That is cult-style behavior.

Ahem, it's the state that filed the charges, not the daughter.

And since pictures are permitted, can't the ceremony be televised?

They do something called baptism for the dead.

So if anyone wants to save their ancestors' souls they have some kind of ceremony.

Yes it is really arrogant. I read somewhere on FR that they even baptized the Pope after he died.

"More likely someone else is the father of the child."

Why would her parents care about that? If thats the case they should be overjoyed she found a guy to marry her and help raise her child. I find that unlikely though. She would be due in March or April if she had become pregnant before the wedding. If she is due in May, like they say, then there is no way she, or anyone, could have even known she was pregnant in early Aug., late July, assuming she was.

Maybe. But dear God and help us all if this little girl pretending to be a grown up becomes a part of our family. And my husband feels the same way, so is he classic too? I defended her, because I fell for her sweetness until I realized my children (5,9 & 10) were not lying when they said she was mean to them when we weren't around. I walked in on it one day and a cousin said when I was out of earshot she said something REALLY mean and hateful to my oldest and almost tore her up there and then. But I know if I try to convince my son she is anything but sweet and innocent with batting eyelashes, he'll run to her even faster. Or she'll alienate him and we won't have him.

So time will tell and when he figures it out, we'll be there for him.
