"Webb is just another political whore using his uniform as a campaign prop like JF Kerry."

***

All or most politicians are "political whores" to some extent. I'm not excusing his current campaign. I'm saying he probably would have been a better Defense Secretary than Rumsfeld.

"Does the Right hope to hold control of the House?"

Yea.
It does.
How 'bout you, druby?
Tell me/us if you think the Right can. ;^)

Hey druby take a wild leaping guess how the CT RINO votes on issues important to conservatives most of the time?
Or put another way, with who?
Go for it.

I'll repeat: Does the Right really need this guy?
I'll make it even simpler for you druby!!
Does the Right really need this flipflop turncoat quisling-shill?
Well do they, *druby*?

See you're "new" around here, huh.

...well wonder of wonders.

Calling for Rumsfeld to quit (or Hastert or anybody else for that matter) is the most ridiculous thing these ridiculous politicians do.

I think I might start demanding my bank give me $100,000 everyday. Surely if I do it everyday for several years they will give in, right?

Shays has already done this before.

The Iraqi factions just signed a new compact to try to stop the violence -- we need to give it some time to see if it works.

Bush wanted to bring democracy to Iraq and change the Middle East. Rummy did not, and he planned to remove the regime and leave the country no matter what the situation on the ground was. Rummy put Transformation over the troops and the War on Terror. Gen. Mark Scheid has only made one interview with the press since he resigned and he has no asked for Rummy to resign unlike others.

Long before the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld forbade military strategists to develop plans for securing a post-war Iraq, the retiring commander of the Army Transportation Corps said Thursday. In fact, said Brig. Gen. Mark Scheid, Rumsfeld said "he would fire the next person" who talked about the need for a post-war plan.

"The secretary of defense continued to push on us that everything we write in our plan has to be the idea that we are going to go in, we're going to take out the regime, and then we're going to leave," Scheid said. "We won't stay."

Scheid said the planners continued to try "to write what was called Phase 4," or the piece of the plan that included post-invasion operations like security, stability and reconstruction. Even if the troops didn't stay, "at least we have to plan for it," Scheid said.

"I remember the secretary of defense saying that he would fire the next person that said that," Scheid said. "We would not do planning for Phase 4 operations, which would require all those additional troops that people talk about today. "He said we will not do that because the American public will not back us if they think we are going over there for a long war."

Why did Rumsfeld think that? Scheid doesn't know. "But think back to those times. We had done Bosnia. We said we were going into Bosnia and stop the fighting and come right out. And we stayed." Was Rumsfeld right or wrong? Scheid said he doesn't know.

"In his own mind he thought we could go in and fight and take out the regime and come out. But a lot of us planners were having a real hard time with it because we were also thinking we can't do this. Once you tear up a country you have to stay and rebuild it. It was very challenging."

Scheid doesn't go so far as calling for Rumsfeld to resign. He's listened as other retired generals have done so. "Everybody has a right to their opinion," he said. "But what good did it do?"

Where did you get that RNC is pouring money into his race? I don't see it and BTW he is not a favorite of the RNC. Several Republican PACs have donated but I do not find a donation from RNC. Where is the link?

They may run a phone bank but they are doing that across the country in a lot of races. Also they are running ads.

I'm just pointing out the conundrum: The Republican party can insist on ideological purity and live in the wilderness, or it can embrace its liberal members (from districts where conservatives can't win) and maintain its political power.

Like BOR says, tell me where I'm going wrong here.

Webb a better defense secretary than Rumsfield. Give me a break! Webb was terrible as Secretary of the Navy. Webb is against the war in Iraq but then you probably already knew that.

"You go to war with what you got!", Rummy replied. Rummy is an arrogant technocrat like McNamara was.

I don't agree. Rummy was not tactful, but it's not the business of troops to help support a propaganda attack on their leaders.

As it turned out, apparently the armored humvees, forced through by that press propaganda campaign, are more dangerous than the earlier ones, because they are top heavy. I believe more troops have died using them than would have otherwise.

and our options are?

Maybe Republicans should review what happened, and why, in the 1994 Congressional elections. Stand on specific, conservative positions and get support from the party. If you're a liberal POS who just happens to call themselves a Republican, you're on your own. This is the opposite of what the Republican party is doing now. Now they only look at "electability" determined by their own no-principle position which has led them to not only withdraw support from but to actively work against conservative candidates, all the while supporting candidates who would not even be "moderate" Democrats. If the Republicans don't stand on principle, they won't stand at all.

I think this whole glorification and deification of military figures has been blown far out of proportion. Every day we see generals or colonels who support or condemn Rumsfeld, support or denounce the war, engage in partisan politics one way or the other.

The fact is that they hold different opinions and see things from different perspectives - as do all of us.

Thank GOD the Founding Fathers gave CIVILIANS control over the military! Personally, I'm sick of seeing every veteran who enters politics being greeted like Marco Polo when he returned from China!!
