Job Growth Slows, Unemployment Rate Dips (Ah, the AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Employers added just 51,000 jobs in September, the fewest in almost a year, while the unemployment rate dropped down to 4.6 percent -- offering a mixed picture of the nation's jobs climate.

Still, the new figures released by the Labor Department on Friday suggested that although the economy has moved into a slower phase of growth, it is not in danger of sliding into a recession, analysts said.

The new tally of payroll jobs added to the economy fell short of the 120,000 positions analysts were expecting. However, job gains for both July and August turned out to be bigger than previously estimated, helping to take some of the sting out of September's tepid payroll figure.

-snip-

Friday's snapshot is the next to the last one that Americans will get of the labor market before Election Day.

The last one will come on Nov. 3 -- just days before the November elections.

Voters' choices at the polls on Nov. 7 are likely to be shaped in part by how they are faring economically. The administration says Americans are mostly better off, while Democratic rivals disagree.

President Bush's approval rating on the economy is at 40 percent among all adults surveyed in an AP-Ipsos poll. That remains near his lowest ratings. The poll showed that people surveyed trusted Democrats to do a better job of handling the economy than Republicans.

I can't *believe* they actually said that the economy 'may not go into recession'. And here I was ready with the 'we're DOOOOMED(tm)'

The AP is a sorry excuse for a news organization.

4.6? Oh no, depression territory. I guess the American people want a bad economy since every poll shows big majorities think the president is doing a bad job with the economy. Since when the US gov't runs the economy is beyond me anyway.

I guess Republicans would have been better off if gas prices stayed high too since their numbers seem to have gone down since Labor Day. I think too many nutjobs out there seriously think this was some kind of Bush conspiracy and has soured them even more on the GOP. Pretty scary isn't it?

Ah, go ahead.

After all, we're on the brink of recession. That's why the Fed has been raising rates, the market is up, unemployement is low, etc.

Do it for "the children."

I have to laugh at the audacity of this article and how they just blatantly twist the truth.

If I don't laugh, I'll explode.

Look at how they reported things when clinton was pres:

July 5, 1996

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Economists didn't expect June's unemployment rate to be much different from May's, which was an already-low 5.6 percent. But in fact, it did fall -- to 5.3 percent.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9607/05/jobless/

LOL, 5.6 was "already low" but Bush 4.6 is a mixed story. Gotta love it!

Any student in Economics 101 learns that there is a "natural" rate of unemployment due to the fact that there are always people in between jobs ... zero unemployment is impossible. In the US economy, 4-5% is the likely range of this "natural" rate of unemployment ...thus the US economy is at or very close to full employment. Note that we are maintaining this low unemployment rate despite having millions of illegal immigrants in the country taking up jobs. The MSM obviously chooses to ignore the facts.

"The fewest in almost a year", meaning since LAST year when the typical end-of-summer downtick occured.

"But july and august were revised higher", just like september will probably be revised higher as well.

"won't go into a recession" -- (d*mnit)

"People trust the democrats more on the economy" -- because people hate having a great economy, they'd much rather have a stock market bubble and high taxes.

Slow job growth because employers are having trouble finding people willing to work, or competent enough to do the jobs?

We've hired two people (office of 15) in the last month. It was very hard to find someone competent.

Colleges/Universities are not preparing these kids for work; but they sure know Democrats are good and Republicans are bad. They never forget what time the lunch hour is, but they have a hard time remembering what time the work day starts.

IF that is a true reflection of the mindset of Americans, we may safely conclude that about 50% of our fellow Americans are blithering imbeciles.
