Man Beaten To Death In Low-Security O.C. Jail

(CBS) SANTA ANA, Calif. A Mission Viejo man awaiting trial on suspicion of possessing child pornography for sale was beaten to death in a jail unit for low-security inmates, an Orange County sheriff's representative said Friday.

John Derek Chamberlain, 41, was "murdered by an inmate or inmates while in the shower" at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange, the department's Jim Amormino said.

Guards got a call of a "man down" about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and Chamberlain was declared dead at a hospital about an hour later, Amormino said.

Investigators were interviewing some 140 inmates, he said.

This man had not even been convicted but say he had... This prison justice isn't right. I'm not talking about criminals rights either. As far as I'm concerned , when we convict them, they have none, and belong to the state who is removing them from society. A responsibility goes with that too IMO. I'm all for isolation and letting them out one at a time for showers, exercise etc under direct supervision but it doesn't say much for society when prisoners are hurt or killed under our watch, esp when we cheer about it. It sounds too much like one of them.

Numerous people have been tried for possession of kiddie porn because it was on their computer. And later it was learned that their computer was hacked via the Internet and used to distribute porn without the owners knowledge.

I'm not saying we should throw away the rule of law and make this standard operating procedure.

I'm not saying I'd even advocate this.

By the way the inmates in the OC jail are pretty heavily weighted with illegal Mexicans and gangbangers. Perhaps the guy was just too white and too nerdy? Maybe they weren't dispensing your version of justice at all. Maybe they were just getting rid of another annoying white guy. Nevermind that criminals made you happy as heck in killing a man who was NOT CONVICTED of a damn thing. Perhaps you would be happy with just putting the accused in a coliseum and killing them a la ancient Rome. I guess we should start breeding lions and start training gladiators. Well, way back when I was growing up in the thucking USSR, the courts and the state investigators ["prokuratura"] there worked so unbelievably well that an acquittal by a court was the stuff of fiction only. 100% conviction rate - not even 99.99, but 100%. And that sociological frame of mind and social existence is one of the reasons I told that effing USSR where to go and got the ef out of there.

This guy is DEAD. He was not a character on some TV cop show. He was a real guy, with parents and everything, and he's not going to appear as a guest star in some other show next season. You say you're going with the odds — so what are the odds that he was guilty? 98% 99% You may be right — but it doesn't matter now, because guilty or not he is 100% dead.

Look, kiddie-diddlers nauseate me. You show me a person who was convicted by a jury of his peers of molesting a kid and I'd gladly watch the state executioner beat him to death with a tire iron. But until that jury foreman says "guilty" the law says that he cannot be legally deprived of his right to live, and anyone who kills him is committing murder, period.

I know you're just trying to be all hard and macho here. It's satisying to think that someone who could hurt an innocent child is beneath the contempt of even the lowest of convicted criminals. It satisfies one's sense of justice to find that there are some things that even thieves, murderers, drug dealers, and rapists consider evil. But this is too serious a thing to joke about. This guy was a human being and now he's dead. And next time it could be you or me. That's not funny.

Those are good enough odds for me to laugh at him and take amusement at the situation. I'm not saying they're good enough for us to dispense with our criminal justice system.

Heck, even a left wing nut like Alan Dershowitz admitted in his book that most people on trial for serious crimes are guilty. And that's good enough for me to assume he's guily ON A MESSAGE BOARD, NOT IN A COURT ROOM, and have a little fun with it.
