How to save youtube videos (and upload them elsewhere)

After David Zucker's political ad was flagged on youtube.com, some of you asked how to download youtube videos to watch elsewhere. These are instructions for doing so. If you know an easier or more direct method, please post.

1) Copy the url from the youtube page. (I searched for freerepublic to find a worthy sample)

2) Go to http://keepvid.com and paste the youtube url in the space provided

3) Save file by clicking download (part A), then clicking "download link" (part B). Save it

as an .flv extension

4) Download cinemaforge (It's free software you can find online) or similar software.

5) With cinemaforge, convert .flv file to something playable for video sharing websites (wmv, mpeg, etc)

6) Click encode. Your new video is now the proper format for video sharing sites.

7) Upload to another website. (zippyvideos, tinypic, mediamax)

The context of the discussion involves videos which might be censored by YouTube. In which case, the creator WANTS it distributed

"I want to warn everyone that any time you download and install software from the net you are HIGHLY vulnerable to malware attacks.

The only times any of my machines were hijacked were from downloaded software."

You are absolutely right, BUT: I've been downloading software since before there WAS a publicly-accessable Internet, and I've NEVER had a machine hijacked. There are precautions you can take to prevent that sort of thing. One easy one (not cheap, but easy) is to have a separate computer for the purpose of checking out downloads and evaluating them.

Have that machine loaded with as many different antispyware programs as you can stand to have running at the same time. I've got Symantec's Enterprise edition antivirus, AdAware SE Plus, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4, and Spyware Blaster, all running on every machine we have.

Do most, if not all, of your downloading from reputable sites. http://www.download.com is a good site, for example. It's run by Cnet. ZDnet has their own download site, as well. http://sourceforge.net/ is good for those who like open-source software.

Paranoia is a good idea when you download. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you...

And use the other machine to do all your critical work. MS Office allows you to install it on two machines, as long as you're not letting both copies be used at the same time, so all you really need is a second copy of the OS, and you can use a thrift-store computer for the spare machine.

You can now download MS Virtual PC for free from their site, and run virtual machines to use as sandboxes on that spare machine, too. Run the stuff you are really scared of (if you must) there, and you can keep an eye on it, from outside, where it can't get to anything to harm it. I've downloaded that software, too, but not tried it out yet.

Get a Mac...

Have you seen those "Mac commercials" (i.e., "I'm a Mac; I'm a PC"). They're great. AND, it's true, you don't get viruses (zip, nada, none, not at all), and you don't get malware. It's true.

Although I run anti-virus software on my Macs, it's one of the most *non-useful* pieces of software that I have. It's totally *useless* on a Mac! I don't know why I have it, actually.

I just looked at one of those 24-inch iMacs the other day. I think I'm going to get it. What a great screen with that iMac. I love it...

You said -- "If you know an easier or more direct method, please post."

For "getting the file" on your hard drive, in an easy fashion (and for MACINTOSH users), you can do the following --

Using Safari (your web browser), when you're on that page that is playing the YouTube movie -- go to "Activity" under the "Window" menu. You'll get a list of links for your window that you're viewing. Look for the link that has the "mb" in size. That will be the YouTube movie. It will be the largest link (in file size) there. Copy that link and then put it into a new browser window. The link will download and the file will be on your computer. It's pretty simple with the Macintosh and Safari.

Regards,
Star Traveler

P.S. -- You can choose from a series of "flv' players for playing that file, or look around in "VersionTracker' for any number of programs to do whatever you want to with that file.

Good info.

If you are using Firefox, like I do, you can install an add-on that will automatically download YouTube, My Space, etc directly to your hard drive. Here's the tutorial link:

How To Download Videos From YouTube

Once on my hard drive, I use a conversion tool similar to CinemaForge to convert it to .avi for sharing.
