Men being Men is a Bad Deal. Guys should Evolve Beyond Masculinity. By Robert Jensen

Sunday, October 8, 2006

It's hard to be a man; hard to live up to the demands that come with the dominant conception of masculinity, of the tough guy.

I was going with the flow til the part about Rumsfeld ...the old war horse. Don't get me wrong now; but I believe "looking good" is the last thing on Rummy's mind. He's the salt that doesn't need the pepper. Don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Albeit, I am only playing with yas' here; and truly believe it is difficult to judge the character of a person from "fan magazines" or the scripted roles they play in films or even on the grandiose stage of all -- Capitol Hill!

Compartmentalization of others could result in a missed opportunity to know someone who may have a lot of happiness to offer.

Have a good evening,

I was giving an example of what a masculine man looks like. I'm aware that actors are acting a role but it is this role that I am talking about. When I mentioned Rumsfeld and Bibi, obviously, I mentioned them for their strength and the fact that they don't waffle - a truly masculine trait.

Inner strenght and dedication should have no gender classification.

It doesn't. It never did and it never will. But masculinity goes beyond that as I explained in my previous post.

Gotta go to bed, I'm playing squash tomorrow.

Nighty night, all. Sweet dreams.

Inner strength and dedication should have no gender classification.

VD's post is about what she finds sexually appealing in a man, and to a greater extent what many women find appealing in men. While those traits are not exclusively masculine, I tend to think that women tend to notice and appreciate them more in a man, than men tend to notice and appreciate them in a woman.

Truth is, most men won't even notice inner strength and dedication in a woman, as they tend to not be immediately apparent nor primarily high on the sex appeal list for most men.

They do tend to be apparent and fairly high on the sex appeal list for most women, though. That's the point I appreciated from VD's post.

Hey there Victoria!

What a great post.

I listened to Father Loya, a Catholic priest featured regularly on Relevant Radio, talk about musculinity in the context of Pope John Paul's theology of the body, a few weeks ago. You are right on with your assessment, and very much reiterates the writings of Pope John Paul, The Great.

Masculinity allows men to be confident to their faith, and their absolute respect for women. When others try to dismiss the masculinity of man they totally dismiss the attributes that the good Lord has given man. Strong, caring, respectful, and faithful to God are so intrinsic to man's identity that they should not be dismissed as sexist or backwards. Unfortunately we are living in a society now that is hell bent to change all of the rules that has made our society successful. When did the arrogance start?

I certainly believe it was lost when people started losing focus on God, and all the blessings that he has bestowed upon man.

During the week I was reading some philosophy of God's existence from St. Thomas Aquinas, and I told my students when I refer to "man" I am speaking for men and women. I told them I will not dumb down the translation to make it not seem "Sexist" or out dated. They liked the idea that this was done.

Sometimes I think my 8th grade CCD students know more than a lot of adults that are out there. They understand that there are differences in men and women, and those differences are blessings.

Great post... You are a tremendous woman to behold, and are worth defending and/or rescuing, should you ever need it!

God Bless.

All jokes aside, I hope masculinity never disappears. Real women like real men, and that means masculine men.

Bravo, Victoria! You are all woman!! Real women such as you inspire real men everywhere ;-)

VD's post is about.........

I understand very well what this poster's opinion is; however, because I might raise my own opinions which appear not, on the surface, in keeping with the "landslide" of others or the (VD)poster's own opines; but truly, in fun, only digging for a little more genuineness of opinion with less "Vanity Fair Resound" in debate.

I will now conclude; however, while scrubbing out my Peri dish, that the poster has actually conducted [unknowingly]her own experiment on this forum. And with use, in part, of her terrific profile page was able to suck in the stomachs of many of her male FReeper contemporaries here. Were these sensitive answers in keeping with the true "working" character of those commenting or were their opinions that one wants the other to hear?

Life is an ice cream cone.(RummyGump-ism). It comes in different flavors. The flavor, whether plain vanilla or chocolate fudge chunk, the one most addicted to, cannot be reasoned why; nor ever even questioned for that matter, but only enjoyed. Grab hold of your favorite flavor as best you can, respect those that seek to keep us free, and challenge and refute those that seek, for whatever reason, to destroy.

I guess that's how gays "evolve", by trying to feminize the rest of world.

Good for me I don't believe in evolution.

That's all fine, but is peripheral to the issue raised in my post.
