US full of Internet addicts: study

The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."

The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.

Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.

"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."

According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

And this would be bad why????

people are resourcful and have found a positive use for internet, not to mention this has been a huge way to keep up on current events.
If everyone ran to the library and spent 30 hours a week there reading newspapers I'll bet no one would call it "self medication"

Just trying to show that in every age you have people criticizing progress and overemphasizing the negative aspects of new things over the positive aspects, especially if those positive aspects work against the status quo of entrenched ruling elites like liberal researchers at Stanford in the current age ...

you are probably a FReepaholic and should seek help from a licensed professional.

What is their website?

Gosh, let me tell all my FRiends here that I am an internet addict! I am not trying to hide it. I am proud and take full responsibility for it.

Don't all faces have a frame around them and appear on a flat, glowing screen?

LOL. About 10 years ago I went back for a masters, concentrating in human-computer interaction. It was my first exposure to using the Internet a lot and I had several dreams where the dream appeared on a screen and I had to scroll down to see what was happening.

I an NOT an 'Internet Addict'. The mere suggestion is preposterous. Hide my on-line activity like a drunk, hides his booze, HA! - that's silly.

Just because I have a quart of Free Republic stashed in the cupboard and a pint of FR under the bed - for emergencies mind you, means nothing. NOTHING I tell you.

Oops, hold on, wait a sec ... Hey, you. Yeah YOU - get outta there, leave that cable wire alone!

Whew, that was close (cold sweats)

I think a considerable number of FReepers are now considered addicts.

Phooey. I can quit any time.

You mean you haven't contracted those chores out years ago?

If I were to ever get married again, instead of a worthless diamond ring, he would have to present me with a weekly maid---and bring a tandem computer.

:-)

I finally gave up trying to control my FReeping. I still hate to admit that I do it to excess. I'm glad I'm hearing from other FReepers feeling that we are sick. (I thought so for years!) I now find out that many people suffer from the same feelings of guilt and hopelessness that I did. I find out now that I had these feelings because I am a FReepaholic.

I'm deciding to try and face up to what FReeping has done to me. I'll try to answer your questions honestly. I realize if I answer YES to four or more questions, I am in deep trouble with FReeping. I'll try to remember that there is no disgrace in facing up to the fact that I have a problem.
