US full of Internet addicts: study

The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."

The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.

Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.

"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."

According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

Should we start an online 12 step program?

There are dozens on the Web already.

That's the beauty of it. It is like sitting at home, monitor on, keyboarding into the biggest library and media center in the world. That's not loafing. It's educational.

We can be there live when, for example, Greg Kelly is in a Humvee driving with American forces up to a palace vacated by Saddam Hussein. Live, listening to the radio reports from Sydney of Palestians rioting on the beaches in Australia. Live, waiting for Yassar to die. Live, watching events unfold throughout the world. Or play solitaire when things are dull.

I'm about to watch Clooney in "Syriana" with my wife. Am I about to be indoctrinated? Anyone know? Is there any entertainment qualities to this flick apart from the leftist tripe?

Between work and when I'm at home, I have 16 hours of access to the internet. I sleep 7 hours, and it takes me an hour to get to and from work. So, see...I'm only connected 2/3 of the day. It's those 24-hour people who have the problem... I think...

You can turn them off????

Yes. You can. But it is a hassle. You gotta click on a bunch of icons and buttons and all kinds of stuff.

The article said "problemic use".
Using the internet to work off a foul mood.
Or having a fixation on one subject that demoralizes or perverses oneself or others.

IMO that would be more of the chat room arena, forums for the disgruntled, porn surfers and name calling bullies ect.

I don't quite see discussing politics, lite hearted discussions or reading the Daily Mass/Praying the Rosary as "problemic".

Great way to get through a cold/flu day when your at home to rest or post surg too. Surf and sleep per Doctors orders.

And news updates. I think it is great when someone is able to give first hand accounts in breaking news if I am also watching it on the tv news too. It is a interactive hobby when home bound for the day.

Now OTOH to porn surf, whine and moan, cyberstalk other to make yourself feel good not a positive thing. IMO.
