The family is appealing because the traditional Muslim punishment for proven rape is death.

Misha and her husband were taken to the Jeddah market place where her father shot her before her husband and in the presence of her sisters and cousins. Her husband was executed by the sword.

Obviously, death is for the perpetrators.

However, since she is now "sullied" by the act, she is no longer marriageable to any man of her class and has brought shame to her family. So there will probably be an attempt to persuade her to kill herself to restore the family's "honor." Short of that, she maybe the victim of an honor killing.

This is a tribal practice that, in some regions, holds that even a small girl child, overpowered and assaulted by an adult male relative many times her size, is to blame for the attack and must die to restore the family's honor. Personally, I think this attitude is motivated by the fact that, in many cases, the victimizer(s) is/are often too powerful to be called to account or if they are, further waves of retribution will be set off. But if the woman or girl disappears, so will the evidence of the family's continuing shame and social equilibrium in the tribe will be restored.

It's further evidence of just how disposable females are in these societies. Beneath contempt is too kind a term to apply to my feelings toward them.

My ex mother in law lived in Saudi Arabia while her husband was training pilots. She was friendly with the royal family and said most of the women try to get out of there in any way possible. They use education as a way to get freedom but usually are called home to marry the man the father picks. She said that its not bad if you have money but that they treat cars and expensive items like jokes. Car runs out of gas they abandon it on the road. Nobody dares touch it as they would be harshly dealt with. You steal they cut off the hand you eat with. That way you have to eat with the hand you wipe your a$$ with. That is considered to be a fitting punishment. She also told me stories of American and English women who marry the Saudi men never dreaming how harsh life is to women in Saudi Arabia. they have no rights and if they have children they are not allowed to take them if they are lucky enough to be allowed to leave.

I really don't know. Maybe its because they know of no other way of life. I don't understand the women who are American and convert. I just don't understand why they would do that after living regular lives. I will be d@mned if I will ever wear a burka and be treated differently then I am now. I know they convert many blacks into Muslims when they are in jail. My oldest daughter dated a prison guard who said on 9/11 the Muslims were cheering when the World Trade Centers were hit. The prison went on lockdown. I think that the religious fanatics of the Muslim world are very dangerous. I wouldn't want to be a woman in any of those countries. I don't understand how the women live that way but I guess they have very little choice in the matter.
