Lewisburg, PA -- Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, commented today on a story published in The New York Times that calls to question the release of valuable information contained in captured pre-war documents discovered in Iraq.
It is incumbent on the President, as our Commander in Chief, to hold members of the intelligence community accountable to the law if an error was made in improperly posting sensitive information on the Internet.
In the legislation that I authored, and in correspondence with the President, the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, I have always stressed that we must guard against the dangerous disclosure of classified information in the interest of national security.
Releasing captured Iraq documents is imperative to prevailing in our military campaign in Iraq. These documents are necessary to help the American people understand the nature of the threat we face and the justification for our invasion of Iraq. There are many things that need to be done in this war, but none of them will happen unless the American people come to grips with the terrible fact that we are at war, and there is no way to escape it.
Senator Santorum introduced legislation in March requiring the Director of National Intelligence to make available military documents and photographs recovered in Iraq and Afghanistan. Specifically, the bill requires the Director of National Intelligence to make publicly available on an Internet website documents captured in Afghanistan or Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, or Operation Iraqi Freedom. The legislation authorizes the Director of National Intelligence to withhold making a document publicly available if the release of the materials would be harmful to America's national security interests.

The New York Times article to be published on November 3rd 2006 is about the US putting some captured Iraqi documents on the Foreign Military Intelligence Office (FMSO) website that talks about what the NYT and the IAEA call sensitive information from Iraq 1996 "Full, Final, and Complete Declaration FFCD presented to the UN and IAEA in 1996 and that talks about Iraq nuclear clandestine program. The IAEA and the New York Times claim that Iran may be using some of the technology in this FFCD which is a laughable idea as shown below.

Why is he blasting the President?
Seems to me that he should be shouting that Iraq was within a year of having an atomic bomb.
Disappointing.
btt
I think that he's trying to say that Saddam Hussein had a nuclear weapons program. ;)
I musta missed something.
Since when is the New York Times concerned abou National Security?
And why don't they hold themselves up to the same standard?
Liars.
Hypocrites.
Republicans Have Nothing To Fear Except Themselves
Quick, call Wilson, Plame and the owners/controllers of the NY Slimes, Washington Compost and of course ABCNNBCBS.
They should know about this "latest" development.
cc: Fitzy, the biases/ stupid A$$ed one.
Merry Fitzmas to all the rats running for reelection or election.
But, that ain't gonna stop the military hating leftist, dictator loving, anti-war code pinko traitors or any other socialist, communist, marxist loving, American hating assholes on the planet. Now, will it? If they saw a mushroom cloud over a US city, they'd claim satan Bush did it, just like they say he knocked the towers down.
SWtuff is happening fast...maybe this action from Santorum caused them to shutdown the site.
Rove at work again?
Thanks, I was really confused!
Good move by Santorum. Now it will be really hard for the mediots in charge of the MSM to ignore this new reality.
Rush, Sean and Hugh will have a field day with this, and so will we.
I will be off most of the weekend. My birthday is Sunday, and we are picking up the Grandkids today. They watch me like a hawk if I try to come to the computer. Their parents and Uncle will be here Saturday night or Sunday.
Typo ...SWtuff should be Stuff....
ON TOP OF KERRY"S, PELOSI'S, REID'S AND KENNEDY'S HEAD!
This information needs to be out there. This country will not get behind the war effort without this information.
Why is this a good move by Santorum?
He is NOT stating that Iraq was a year away from a nuke. He IS saying the Bush admin are bumbling idiots for putting the info out.
"Disappointing."
I think we should be prepared from more disappointment. Even Hoekstra's camp, who was instrumental in getting the documents out there, isn't jumping for joy. "J" has worked tirelessly on this project and is to be given props for it, but IMO, Bush took a beating on this and despite evidence to the contrary, for some dang reason hasn't been and isn't willing to re-visit this issue, and it looks like others will follow suit. Are they all missing the point of the article, probably not, since it would be so easy to state the obvious, as we see it, instead.
There aren't a lot of scientists who can decipher "nuclear documents". It might look good on paper....but you might have to go back to the blackboard many times.
Santorum is desperate and is whoring for Dem votes. He knows he is about to lose. I expect after he is out of the Senate he will be one of those "true" conservatives who wind up bashing our side at every turn.
He is saying the Bush admin are bumbling idiots for putting the info out -and- that he had already warned them to not do something like this, but they did so anyway due to apparent carelessness.
So, it's an even more damning attack by Santorum.
Not Gergen, more like Scarborough
I think Santorum is trying to inoculate himself from charges that his legislation caused the release of this information to the Web. Read it carefully before you jump all over him. There is such a thing as good legislation that gets badly implemented.
Senator Ricky! The polite thing to do when the Talking Heads and Democrat Hacks declare you deceased is to lie quietly in the casket with your hands folded.
True conservatives don't lick Specter's boots. Rick's a typical pol, a reliable vote, but once he is out next week all bets are off.
Relax - I'm simply making an observation. Do you think Arlen is a good conservative? That was my point, save the hyperbole.
That's one reason he's behind.. If he had a aide reading this site he would be more informed and know how to spin the story..

Just wanted to make sure I heard you correctly - could you please repeat that? Thanks.
lol
If you think Rick Santorum is a typical pol, I really can't help you. Go read Peggy Noonan's column today, or anything Kathryn Jean Lopez has written on National Review in the last two weeks. Or David Brooks' column which you can read at Philly.com.
I think if Santorum loses next week (heaven forbid)...he will automatically become a top contender to run for POTUS...
I was wondering...I just heard Laura Ingraham restating for the millionth time..that we haven't been attacked again..
WHAT IF...the fact that we DID go into Iraq...and DID capture Saddam is THE reason we haven't??
Even Putin told Bush that he knew Saddam was planning on coming after the USA...
I am still a big believer that the WMDS DID exist in 2002...but, by the time the Congress and UN took Bush through the obstacle course...Saddam had a chance to get them out of the country.
BUT, these documents spell out a lot...and I heard today that there were 48,000 BOXES of documents...think of what is still left to translate.

Believe me, if I lived in PA I would be voting early and often for Santorum. I want him to win. And more importantly for the Dem to lose.
Go Santorum!
