Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery.
Under the rule being considered by the citys Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and asserting that their proposed change would be permanent.
Applicants would have to have changed their name and shown that they had lived in their adopted gender for at least two years, but there would be no explicit medical requirements.
Surgery versus nonsurgery can be arbitrary, said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the citys health commissioner.
Dr. Frieden continued: Somebody with a beard may have had breast-implant surgery. Its the permanence of the transition that matters most.
If approved, the new rule would put New York at the forefront of efforts to redefine gender. A handful of states do not require surgery for such birth certificate changes, but in some of those cases patients are still not allowed to make the change without showing a physiological shift to the opposite gender.--Snip--
--Snip--The change would lead to many intriguing questions: For example, would a man who becomes a woman be able to marry another man? (Probably.) Would an adoption agency be able to uncover the original sex of a proposed parent? (Not without a court order.) Would a woman who becomes a man be able to fight in combat, or play in the National Football League? (These areas have yet to be explored.)

Why even bother putting their sex on the damn thing. This is insane.
Gaaaakk.......
I wanna be an 'it'.
State-sanctioned document fraud.
Maybe they should let them change their species from human to dumb ass.
I prefer "thing." LOL!
Can we put a cage around these people and charge admission?
That's what you do at Freak shows.
Heck, why stop there. I'm sure there are people on DU that can't even be classifed as human (or would want to). Next thing you know, the birth certificates will say 'tree species'.
Or some such complete idiotarian notion.
How about "other"...
What's in the water in NY? Did Hillary come up with this or was is Charlie Rangle? If it were in California, I'd think it was Sheila Kuehl.
So, what happens when this.....person, travels outside ov NY? How do they then explain themselves?
(In a deep, gravely voice) "Yeah, I'm a woman. Sez it here in my boith certificate."
"Maybe they should let them change their species from human to dumb ass."
That is "pee in your pants funny". When are you running for public office?
"Under the rule being considered by the citys Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and asserting that their proposed change would be permanent."
I have NOW heard everything.
Well then, I'm moving to New York! I'm a lesbian trapped in a man's body, and I demand to be allowed to shower with women at the gym!
aaarrrgggghhhhh....why don't they just put "M" or "F" on their foreheads?
Ha ha ha! What!?
I guess there really aren't any important problems to deal with in New York.
Tree species. That's Al Gore, right?
This is brought to you by the same folks who want to ban trans fats in NYC restaurants and currently invades the privacy of NYC diabetics by requiring their blood sugar test results be sent to them so they can play nanny.
The NYC Health Department is the embodiment of the liberal nanny state.
I'm changing my sex to "studmuffin".
I thought this is why they started using "gender". "Gender" was used in place of "sex" so people could put down what they thought they were. Your "sex", on the other hand, cannot be changed, as it is your genetic structure. You are either "XX" or "XY". If they want to mess around with the definition of their imaginary psychological term, whatever. If they think they can start messing around with the scientific descriptor "sex" though, they're living in 1984.
This would be funny if we could make corrections for other people if the case is so obvious that it calls for such a change.
"And in the News today, Hardball host Chrissy Matthews was surprised to learn that he was now a legally a woman...he-she was later seen purchasing several pounds of chocolate and a bottle of Pamprin.
Yeah, this'll do alot for homeland security.
"Maybe they should let them change their species from human to dumb ass."
LOL!!! Howling with laughter from that. Outstanding!
So does this mean I can sign up for the women's swim team and join them in the locker room?
Man, I wish that would have been legal when I was 14!
[puritan freepers - It's a joke, OK? Funny, laugh, haha, see?]
This is why I voted against the "Equal Rights Amendment" in Iowa and nationally all those years ago.
It wasn't about equal rights for women. Had nothing to do with that.
I read the thing. It all revolved around the word "Gender" not sex. Sex is male/female. Gender defines masculine/feminine - in other words, what we FEEL about our sex, not what sex we are. That would have been a helluva effective thin edge of the wedge and would have covered every gender bender that you can possibly imagine - those who feel they were born the wrong sex, transgenders, transvestites - all those freaky things that were psychiatric diseases when I was growing up 40 years ago.
Beware EVERY bill passed by the left. Bribery to their own pet freakshow somewhere in them bills.
That's interesting. If you had a birth certificate, an official state document, showing that you were a woman, why couldn't you shower with women.
Let's take it a step further. You join a woman's health club. When they turn you down, you have a great lawsuit.
As soon as they sign on the dotted line, the applicant gets taken to a back room and has "Sick Puppy" tattooed branded on their forehead.
Wait, what was I thinking? We're talking about NYC here...

Long time no see.
I couldn't run for office, I'm too plain spoken .
Reporter dude. Is it true you called your opponent a dumb ass.
Taz...Not only did I say it, let me add this. He has the economic comprehension of a meth head.
Wouldn't do, wouldn't do at all.
My first thought (as I indicated in an earlier post) is what happens when they move out of NY and say, try to get a drivers license in another state? They'll be laughed out of the DMV. Then.... they go find a sympathetic lawyer to sue the state for denying them a license to drive, and all kinds of cans of worms get opened.
No state will ever recognize their altered Birth Certificate.
(Well, maybe Vermont and California)
Just go stay at a youth hostel in Amsterdam, you wouldn't have to go through the "unspeakable stigma" (/sarc) of changing gender, and still be able to get slippery with them.
Sodom and Gomorrah tried this before, and we know what happened there.
"He has the economic comprehension of a meth head."
I now volunteer to work on your campaign. If I were your speech writer, the only change that I would have made would have been this: He has the economic comprehension of a friggin' meth head after a frontal lobotomy. By the by, he also has the morals of a deranged badger that has had a diet of spanish fly and Viagra.
"Long time no see."
Well, two jobs and grad school will do that to ya.
I work the full-time job Monday through Friday and the part-time (teaching undergrad-level history) job two nights per week.
Well, 'tis time for me to toddle-off to bed; I must arise early to go enjoy the right of franchise.
It's not the water. It's all the freaks that move here.
Didn't the Romans allow something similar to this? I remember watching Life of Brian where a man in the People's Liberation Front of Judea announced in the Stadium:
"I want to be a woman, Stan - I want you all to call me Loretta. It's my right as a man.
Stan: But you are not a woman.
Loretta: Don't you oppress me . . . ."
I guess someone in New York wants to replay that scene.
Can I add 4 inches to my height?
I wish I could do that, then I'd be 6 feet tall.
What is this world coming to?
This is one of those things that shows the shameless utter hypocrisy of the left. Although Darwinism is not synonymous with liberalism, liberals believe that it is sound science, and that it should be taught as fact in public schools without competition from other theories about the origin of the species.
On the other hand, they will say something that gender -- something that scientifically can only be defined in either/or terms -- should be up to the individual. It's so maddog stupid.
Failure to live in the real world and accept facts as they are, no matter how disappointing they are, is a workable definition of insanity.
This sort of insanity will now be backed by the coercive power of the state of New York.
>>Good grief.<<

>>Surgery versus nonsurgery can be arbitrary, said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the citys health commissioner.<<
The good doctor does have a point - surgery to mutilate your gentials doesn't really change your sex so if they really let people who have had the operation change their birth certificate then they might as well them do it without the surgery.... its changing the birth records in the first place that's the problem.
Disclaimer: I know there are some people born physically intersex and I have full sympathy for them but they are a tiny minority of those we are discussing.
One of us will do this! I can tomorrow.
When I was four, I wanted to grow up and be an elephant because I liked the Babar books.
So if I'm ever in NY (fat chance), I'll put down "elephant".
I saw this coming over a year ago. I wrote to members of Congress detailing how such a change would negate the proposed Marriage Protection Amendment, but they're hell bent on pursuing an amendment that would be worthless.
But it might be decided that the Constitution requires states to honor it. Maybe we need a Constitutional amendment that allows us to eject states from the union.
