The Democrats Slip
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | 11-7-06

Posted on 11/07/2006 6:42:23 AM PST by rightinthemiddle

For months, the prevailing wisdom in America has been that the Democrats were set to have an easy, and sweeping, victory in this year's Congressional elections. The overwhelming sense that the Bush Administration had lost control of events in Iraq pointed to a rout for the Republicans and personal humiliation for the President. But enthusiasm for the Democrats – who have failed to produce any credible alternative plan for dealing with the Iraqi chaos – seems to be ebbing.

There is a saying in American electoral analysis, "the trend is your friend": absolute poll numbers at any given moment are of less significance than their movement over a period, especially when that period is at the end of a campaign.

In the past few days, the Republican numbers have begun to improve in the opinion polls. Where, two weeks ago, the Democrats' lead was in double digits, it has now shrunk to four points among people "likely to vote", according to one of the most influential surveys. The verdict of the Iraqi court on Saddam Hussein on Sunday will be likely to add to this impetus, by giving heart to the Republicans' "base" and so improving their turnout.

I see the liberals retreating their positions, Schumer stated on Fox news yesterday, "we never said we would take both houses!"

What happen to the big tsunami from the liberals?

WHY??? The whole reason Bush is in trouble is that he "invaded Iraq, which had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11, for no good reason".

Now, word comes down that Bush is going to EXECUTE A COMPLETELY INNOCENT MAN and everyone is cool with that?

The Democrats have to have more issues than George Bush. They hint at free health care and tax the rich. They claim to offer "change," but when they don't explain what they are plan to offer for "change", the voters balk.

It's one thing to sit on the sidelines and carp.

Winning, and putting together a coherent and workable strategy for governing, is an altogether different matter.

The Dims better be careful of what they wish for.

The Democrat lead in the polls has been a fraud, and a shallow one at that. That it evaporates so easily as election day dawns should come as no surprise to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Especially when voters can reasonably surmise that, in the Democrat lexicon, "change" means cutting & running from Iraq, higher taxes, more spending on social programs, less spending for national defense, gay marriage, more abortion and support for the Terrorist Bill of Rights.
