Sen. Chafee May Quit GOP, Divorce Britney Spears

(2006-11-10) — Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee said today he may leave the Republican party, and is also considering ending his stormy marriage with pop star Britney Spears.

“I have been a faithful member of my party, just as I’ve been true to Britney for all these years,” said Sen. Chafee. “But I feel we’ve grown apart. I’ve stuck to the Republican principles of larger government, less aggressive national defense and moral flexibility, but the the party has been co-opted by ideologues who have taken it in a new direction.”

The dual announcements shocked both the political and entertainment worlds as leading experts in both realms had not previously known of either relationship that Sen. Chafee plans to sever.

I said all along that if his vote counted, Chafee would go with the Dems. His recent statements (not the ScrappleFace one, but the actual statements) prove it. I am glad he lost, and would have voted against him if I lived in RI, just to get him off committees. He cost us Bolton and caused a lot of other problems.

Q: This is why I ask you some of these questions, because we have a lot of Democratic senators — a majority of the Democrats in the Senate voted for the Iraq war resolution, and they seem to be dancing around trying to find a comfortable position at this point.

GEORGE MCGOVERN: Yeah, I've seen that. I think there were 23 votes against the war resolution. One of those was Lincoln Chafee, the Republican senator from Rhode Island, who's a terrific young man just like his father with whom I served — the former secretary of the Navy, John Chafee. And the other 22 were all Democrats [with one independent].

Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ as you leave Linc!
