We must get rid of Stevens. He has to go. If we can't talk him into retiring, we've got to get rid of him in the primary. He is a symbol of all that is bad in Washington.
Maybe he just likes the job. If he's happy doing it and is still mentally sharp, why not?

If he is re-elected, we'll have to continue hearing about the "Bridge to Nowhere" for years and years to come. I agree with you that he needs to be replaced.
There ought to be an unspoken retirement age for senators, or at least an accepted limit on the number of terms someone can serve. There are only 100 senators in the whole country at any given time; it's probably not great for someone to monopolize one of those 100 positions for 30 or 40 years. After a quarter-century or so, it might be a good idea to step aside and let the next generation rise into leadership.

I agree, but I also don't believe in unilateral disarmament either. Ted Kennedy, Sheets Byrd and other 'RATS have over four decades seniority. Actually I think they have shot themselves in the foot. They might have had a shot at winning back Congress if the the old guard had been term limited out.
There are too many U.S. Senators who have served for a long time from both political parties, and they are good examples as to why the debate for federal term limits needs to be started again.
Not a huge fan of Domenici, but this is very good news. If we are to have any chance of taking the Senate in '08, we'll need to hold this seat, and he'll do it easily.

Good news on Senaor Domenici. Richardson won't risk it, I don't think.
It would be good to have constitutional term limits (remember that great idea???) of 18 years for the House and Senate.
I think 90 would be a good retirement age. If someone is elected at 88, then the senator would appoint someone to finish their term until the next election.
Poor Heather Wilson have to keep holding on for him to retire.
Good news for Republicans from New Mexico. Alaska is a different story. Ted Stevens is holding the GOP down. He would be a great candidate for a possible Club for Growth primary challenge. Alaska probably won't vote for a Dem.
You are only half right. Both these slugs need to give it up. Here are two examples of why incumbency is so insidious; after so long in office, the office holder forgets who actually owns the seat. Staying there becomes the top priority instead of grooming an acceptable replacement. We have to get over this "congress is disgraceful, but we have to keep our guys in at any cost" mentality.
