First Daughter Barbara (Bush) Robbed in Argentina
abc news ^ | 11-21-06 | abc

First Daughter Barbara Bush had her purse and cell phone stolen as she had dinner in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, even though she was being guarded by a detail of Secret Service agents, according to law enforcement reports made available to ABC News.

It was not the only mishap on the two-week trip to Argentina by Barbara (right) and her twin sister Jenna (left).

A Secret Service agent on the advance detail got into an "altercation" with someone after a night out and was badly beaten, according to the law enforcement reports. The Secret Service said today the incident was an attempted mugging that occurred while the agent was on his own time. The agent is doing fine.

The purse snatching took place on Barbara's first night in town while she was dining in the picturesque San Telmo neighborhood. According to the reports, the Secret Service agents failed to notice the incident.

The Secret Service would not comment on the purse snatching, and the First Lady’s office said they would not comment on any personal trip made by the daughters. There have been recent reports, however, that Jenna Bush has been living and working in Panama as an intern for UNICEF.

I wonder if there are any counterfeiting rings operating above the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

Well, a couple of Secret Service agents are soon going to be looking into the question....

Eleni, why not inform yourself of their activities?

Jenna is a school teacher of young children. She has taught in schools for underprivileged children here in the U.S. under the Teach for America program. Now apparently working in Central America.

Barbara has been "working in the trenches" with AIDS patients and children from those families, in Africa. She was on a bit of a vacation at this season of the year.

Whatever the UNICEF connection, the young women are working AT WHAT THEY DO, not working on or supporting Abortion on demand.

You don't know wth you're talking about. I've eaten out in that area myself with my in-laws, albeit not recently, and it's a nice neighborhood. Bs.As. is a great city to visit.

Remember something: a terrorist/kidnapper could have gotten to the girls. They need tons of security in this world.

I'm surprised the girls are allowed to leave the country. They have to be the most coveted targets in the world

Exactly! I can see traveling with the parents on official trips, but off on their own, especially with this caliber of SS agent...?

I thought the same thing...Rodger H. mentioned it last week filling in for Rush. Some guy put a voodoo curse on W involving a Secret Service slip up.

I'm reading Executive Orders right now. These are not the kind of agents Clancy writes about. :)

Agreed. Argentina is a great place to visit. I can't imagine why the previous Freeper spoke of Argentina as he did.

No, San Telmo actually is picturesque.

Some of the oldest mansions in Argentina, cobblestone streets. etc.

Nice neighborhood, but full of thousands of shoppers at all times, and therefore it has about a hundred pickpockets on duty at any given time.

In America, one usually thinks nothing of putting your purse down on the counter right next to you while you sign a credit slip, etc.

In BA, you might as well leave it on the streetcorner as take it off your shoulder.

My guess: she was buying something souvenirish from a colorful street vendor, put her purse down for a second and a stylishly dressed woman apparently browsing nearby quietly slipped it under her arm and nonchalantly walked off.

Correction - it was apparently in a restaurant.

Could have happened at the restroom or if she put her purse on the floor next to her chair.

Such a common thing.

ummm. They're 25 years old. You think they should forget about having any kind of life or career until they're 27? Give me a break. :/

Thank you! I am often shocked at the ignorant posts posted by Freepers. I do believe we have been inundated with in-the-closet DU types, or people with borderline IQs qualifying them to ride the short bus, or both.

I have NO doubt that many who post these disgusting, ignorant comments are DU plants.

I refuse to believe that anyone who calls himself a conservative is actually as stupid as some of the people who post on this forum.

Bush Derangement Syndrome destroys brain cells.

There are plenty of hot BA women who could distract a guy and remember it's late spring down there and the bikini-clad babes are filling the parks.

Both twins are in Argentina, though no one will say why...

I went last year about this time. It's a great city with plenty to see, it's cheap, and the beef and wine (Malbec) are the best.

Old motto about the National Guard, "Sleep well tonight, the NG is on duty."

Aren't you happy now, it goes like this, "Travel well today, the SS is on duty." NOT!!!
