Hastings makes waste

Democrat Rep. Martin Meehan of Massachusetts says he "plans to hold congressional hearings early next year of the House Armed Services Subcommittee, which he is likely to chair, on a bill that would allow homosexuals to serve in the armed forces," the Boston Globe reported recently, confirming from comrade Meehan that the Democrats' glorious investigations are set to begin. "We will have hearings, and then we can have an honest dialogue with members of Congress." Nothing will come of the hearings and "honest dialogue," since 'callous' and 'cold-hearted' Bush will veto, but the mere fact of having protracted "hearings" and "dialogue" will be a glorious 'achievement,' no doubt marked by uncontrolled manifestations of joy by the people's networks -- CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc.

Democrat Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts says he plans to hold congressional hearings of the House Financial Services Committee, which he is likely to chair, about another pressing matter -- gays in the military. 'Modifying' the "military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy" are what the hearings will be about, the AP reports, noting that the Democrats' majestically glorious investigations are set to begin. "One of the things I do want to address, yes, is discrimination based on sexual orientation," says Frank, adding that "when you have people being fired who can read Arabic and understand Arabic because of what they do when they're off duty, that that's a grave error." The danger to America of not having enough gay Arabic translators! The current policy proves Bush will stop at nothing to evilly repress gays, even to the point of imposing good order and discipline in the military. We need a 5-year plan. With Frank, the military motto goes from 'Watch my back!' to 'Do you like my back?'. Nothing will come of these hearings either, and Clinton's first few months in office were mired in the issue of what battle-hardened gay warmongers in the military do when they're off duty, but Democrats are determined to avoid avoiding this winning issue.

Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel of New York says he plans to hold hearings of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has zero jurisdiction over the draft, to bring back the draft. The idea is that, as long you have the BusHalliburtoNazi/Cheney 'war machine' in charge, "illegally" invading Iraq, you want to provide the 'illegal' warmongers with more men and women in uniform as conscripts, because supplying them with cannon fodder equals peace! If you're trying to stop warmongers, give them more troops. And bigger Pentagon. Give Bush more troops and you "force" Bush to pull troops from Iraq. It all makes sense now.

Rangel is so gung-ho on bringing back the draft that if it came up for a vote in the House today, he would vote against it. Again.

Meanwhile, Democrat Rep. John Dingell of Michigan says he plans to hold hearings of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on why Dick Cheney's energy task force was composed of energy companies, rather than plumbers, or doctors, or waitresses, or baseball players. Companies with the most expertise in energy involved in an energy task force -- it's such a baffling concept. With libbies, you hire a disc jockey to install and repair your kitchen piping. You hire a plumber to be your club DJ. An Energy Task Force should be made up of Olympic figure skaters and librarians, to make it fair. In fact, liberals would run the whole economy this way -- nurses working as truck drivers, truck drivers as hairdressers, hairdressers as engineers, engineers as bricklayers, bricklayers as cardiologists, cardiologists as cab drivers and game show hosts, etc. This worked so well in the Soviet Union.

So, if you're Nancy Pelosi, naturally you pick John Murtha to be your ethics czar and spend weeks deciding whether or not you want Alcee Hastings running the Intelligence committee. The proud milestones keep piling up. The first woman elected speaker of the House almost picked the first African-American for the chairmanship of the Intel committee, which makes Alcee Hastings the first African-American passed over for the chairmanship of the Intel committee, which makes Jane Harman the First Woman Passed Over in favor of a man who was passed over in favor of another man who's the First Hispanic-American rumored for the chairmanship of the Intel committee. If Pelosi bypasses Silvestre Reyes and goes for Rush Holt, Rush Holt (who's a physicist) would be the first Physicist-American picked for the chairmanship of the Intel committee.

The Black Caucus wanted Hastings. The Hispanic Caucus wants Reyes. The Physicist Caucus wants Holt. (Announcement: In light of this growing sectarian conflict, I will buck the media and from now on describe this as a "civil war." This new policy will cover all my columns.)

But, conflict aside, the broader question is what took Pelosi weeks to decide a perjurer might not be the ideal choice to head a committee investigating Bush for allegedly lying? Here you have a judge who got impeached for bribery and perjury by Nancy Pelosi and a Democrat Congress, so Pelosi -- until yesterday -- was giving him the top Intel gig. If you're the "most ethical and moral Congress in history," and you've got a committee that handles "top-secret special compartmentalized information," you want a crooked judge running it. Seventeen articles of impeachment in the House, conviction and removal from the bench by the Senate are part of Hastings's overwhelmingly compelling résumé. No, he wouldn't start selling secrets to Osama -- he'd settle for a middleman, if the price is right.

In fairness, Hastings has always maintained he's an innocent victim -- malicious Colombian drug dealers in the neighborhood that night were committing all that perjury. And a jury acquitted him. (Robert Blake and O.J. are helping Hastings search for the real perjurers.) And he notes that he hasn't taken bribes in eight years of sitting on that committee.

Sooooooo, what's a bribe-taking perjurer up to his eyeballs in hock doing on the Intel committee in the first place? Ah, he was acquitted, though, and Murtha was unindicted -- making them both Pelosi clean-up crew A-listers, busily replacing the GOP 'Culture of Corruption' with Pelosi's much more 'moral' Culture of the Unindicted and Unconvicted.

In dumping Hastings, Pelosi bows to pressure from reality -- first time she's blinked in years. More botox, please.

But the Hastings and Murtha and Meehan and Frank and Rangel and Dingell circus not only point to the fact that Democrats are just as insanely disorganized and unfocused and undisciplined and stupid as they've ever been, but also that I need to stock up on popcorn. Gonna be fun to watch! Anyway, with the Hastings decision out of the way, at least Pelosi's now free to move on to her next screw-up.

Thankful For Seasons

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. —Ecclesiastes 3:1

I grew up on the West Coast of the US. The possibility of snow for Christmas was so remote that my mom would point to fog in the early morning as evidence that the holidays were just around the corner.

My wife and I now live in the Midwest. There’s a lot of snow when the yuletide season comes around. And I couldn’t be happier with four distinct seasons. But I don’t find that same response from many who have grown up in the Midwest. I find it amusing that they don’t share my appreciation for the wonderful cycles of change God has built into nature for our good.

In Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, Solomon acknowledged the cycles of life. He observed a time to sow and to reap, to weep and to laugh, to mourn and to dance, to gain and to lose, to keep silent and to speak, to love and to hate.

Just as God determines the weather, He also controls the cycles in our lives: “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (Eccl. 3:1). Do we resist those seasons and complain about the “snowy” conditions on the horizon? Or do we trust God and thank Him for whatever He has planned for us?

Whatever our situation is today, we can be thankful for God’s seasons. —Dennis Fisher

Good morning, stopem! I think we are going to dodge ice,sleet or snow..They aren't just west of us..It is raining right now and the temp is about 31. The wind makes it feel colder.

One of the squirrels that frequent the patio is a great jumper and can leap up to the hanging tube feeder..I have run out twice to scare him off because he can take the seed level down so fast. I think my kitty Silky is catching on that the load voiced crazed woman running through the house to the patio is not after her..LOL

well, my trip to chiropractor was sooo very good. much better.

He flatters me by telling me I have better arm/back muscle strength & tone than any of his other women patients.. (which I translated to mean they are "soft & feminine"... I am hard & muscular/firm.) I think he meant it as a compliment.

did a slew of errands & must run out again in rain to return library books/movies.

My cousin (lib attorney) is in town from DC.. I am to be with her tomorrow..dog walk in park & lunch.. weather isn't looking too good however.

My last 4 trips to DC I never even let her know I was there. (and each time I stayed in Rockville/Gaithersburg area where she lives). I was there for FReeps/inauguration etc.. Not exactly nice chat material with lib (esp an attorney)

Here at my Little Ranch, there were 10 or 11 Beautiful Ducks Swimming throughout the Day Today in the Cold Pond Waters, Even as the Winds Howled and the Sleet/Light Snow Flurries Fell. A Little Bird of Some Kind Kept Flying Up to the Glass of my Living Room Windows, and I don't Know if he Saw his Own Reflection and was Jealous of it, or if he Wanted to Come in from the Cold.
