The NSA and Princess Di (was Clinton spying on her for a date?)

A Brit newspaper is reporting that the US "secret services" -- presumably the CIA and NSA -- were spying on Princess Diana, bugging her telephone conversations in the summer of 1997, up to and including the day she died. But why would anyone bother? The British royals aren't much involved in politics or matters of national security.

There's only one reason I can think of. Was Clinton wanting to get the lowdown on her before asking for a date? I am pursuing other information from experts, trusted sources, and the usual suspects

Doubt Dianna was the target- but her boyfriend might well have been.

--the Bill and the Hillary attachments--

Attachment? Is there something peculiar about Hillary's anatomy that we don't know (and don't want to know)?

Why do you say that the "sink story" is a myth? Monica described this in her testimony to the grand jury, and it would be a strange thing to make up. Anyway, it's hardly true that "no one" would do this. Trust me on this.

"You could see how, on Diana's part, it was a natural attraction. Hillary was like her older sister."

"You could see how Hillary was like Diana's wicked old great-aunt who went to jail for murdering a female lover who jilted her....." /there corrected it!! (fictional update)

It's more garbage for the tabloids to sell, plain and simple. If anyone thinks that there's an analytical team at the NSA that would spend more than 30 seconds considering whether or not to wiretap Princess Di before calling bull$#^% is hallucinating. It's the stuff of bad television.

***

However, it is plausible from what I know about the current President and the former president. While President Bush might be inclined to wiretap for a valid purpose, such as monitoring suspected terrorists, former president Bluestaineddress would use wiretaps to monitor someone of the opposite sex. Billyboy is in competition with Carter as one of our worst presidents. Disgraces to the office, both of them.

Discussion of the Clinton years does lead into some topics one wouldn't expect in a political context. What amazed me about Monica Lewinsky's grand jury testimony was that she gave so many of these details -- I doubt any prosecutor could have elicited these if she didn't choose to volunteer them.

My guess is--on the presumption that the U.K. has domestic spying restrictions--that we were spying on her so that we could pass off the info to the Brits without them having to go through any internal judicial hurdles

You are one of the sane FReepers, apparently.

Look up Jody Williams and the ICBL...and then keep looking, the answer is there.

I looked it up, and all I found were laudatory bios of Williams' work on landmines. Care to get more specific?

Diana had agreed to a week's holiday with ...one-time American boyfriend Mr. Forstmann to stay with him at his house in the Hamptons. But as she was travelling with the princes, ... the British security services... vetoed Diana's plans.... The decision by the security services ultimately led to Diana striking up her friendship with Dodi and returning to the south of France to holiday with him. This led to her being in Paris on 31 August, the day of the crash.

Here's the issue I have with Clinton, and it brings back issues with his involvement with the Chinese. Clinton did not like using HUMINT - because agents leave good records of what they are covering. What Clinton did like using was ELINT, where he could gather information, but Clinton had a way where he could navigate around respective issues where his movements and possible involvement could be determined by ELINT. This is evident with his advocacy of Echelon and Carnivore.

Clinton may have had the hots for Princess Di, but I'm sure he had no interest in the Saudi, she was hanging out with.

You got it. What I have heard is that the Royal Family was none too happy of Di & Dodi actually getting married. The mother of the next King married to a playboy Muslim! Assassination is an ugly business, but sometimes necessary for the rich and powerful.

I think Babbin underrates the importance of the monarchy. The Queen doesn't run things, but she can and does read the most secret documents. However, this doesn't explain the interest in Princess Diana, who was not and never would be the Sovereign's spouse (eventually she might have lived to be the Sovereign's mother, but that seems a remote concern). Perhaps, as others have suggested, it was the Fayed family that was really of interest.

just like if you hang out at a drug dealer's house, you may inadvertently see police kicking down the door one day. They may not be looking for you, but you might be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Been there. Done that.
